UK industry guy hits back over MadWorld fiasco photo

As you've probably heard, the latest horsesh*t to come from The Daily "Ban This Sick Filth" Mail was a complaint that black-and-white brawler MadWorld would spoil the "family friendly" image of the Wii and should therefore be made illegal in the UK. Games industry marketing veteran Bruce Everiss, who has made waves in the past with his unique critique of the anti-games lobby, has hit out at the ridiculous Daily Mail piece,

"They really are just trying to sell newspapers with sensationalism because nobody with a brain can be stupid enough to believe what they have written." stated Everiss. He then provided his own counterpoints to the assumptions and rhetoric provided by The Mail:

  • If a Wii is family friendly then presumably a DVD player is. And you can play totally execrably disgusting content on a DVD player.
  • Game content is mild compared to film and book content. MadWorld just pales into insignificance compared to what is on these other media.
  • Games are age rated with the excellent PEGI system. Every parent can clearly see this on the front of the packaging...
  • There is plenty of equally violent content already available for the Wii. The Mail are just exposing their total ignorance with this...
Everiss of course makes total sense, and The Daily Mail of course will ignore it completely, because it doesn't care. Nobody working for Britain's unfunniest comic book actually gives a crap one way or another about videogames, but it's very easy to pretend to be offended if it alarms the public and keeps people hooked on your own increasingly obsolete medium. Oh, and further to Everiss' first point, I think that's academic -- nobody with a brain reads The Daily Fail anyway.

Look, if you get mad because you find out your child is playing an M rated game full of explicit violence and sexual themes, a game mind you that most of these pissed off parents actually buy for their children, then you only have yourself to blame.

I know none of this really amounts to a hill of beans though because the parent who are up in arms and all hell bent out of shape about shit like this will never read what I, Jim Sterling or anyone else has to say.

Nonsense like this just needs to stay off of here, nothing will change, and nobody of any significance or importance will ever read this and none of this will change anyone's mind.
Censorship is something that we, unfortunately just have to learn to live with. It's not going to stop and best case scenario it stays the way it is now, although best case is a very small possibility.

I am personally outraged by this sensationalist newspaper and their yellow journalism tactics. It sets the entire news world back into the Salem Witch Trials.

Ban this sick filth.

I think he was asking you some questions there Jim.

I agree with Lord, surprisingly. Reporting on this does absolutely nothing. I know you can probably come up with 50 ways that you can tie censorship in to gaming and the future of gaming and all that blah blah blah but the hard truth of the matter is that none of it will make a lick of difference.

But keep reporting on it if you need to, gotta get paid for doing something right? Especially when it's a slow week for games.

"Reporting on this does absolutely nothing."

Reporting on 90% of what Destructoid, or any gaming blog covers "does nothing." What are you expecting from your blogs now? Massive, life altering doors-of-perception-kicking enlightenment? I write about videogames. This was about videogames.

Up next, blogging for nuclear disarmament!

Yes, common sense or objectivity has no place in this forum centered completely around video games.

Reporting on a logical and well-thought response to highly publicized nonsense is useless - but responding to that logic with empty criticisms against substance is far more important! Rabblerabblerabblerabble!

Why the fuck is this being written, Jim? And who the fuck are you?

Also, if something is happening that a group of people believe is wrong, but no one will hear them, does that mean they should stop speaking against it?

I think not.

Think of the harm it could do to the baby and what would the 34 year old father do when he finds out about this.

Stupid games ruining everything pure in this world.

Why the fuck should they or Britain as a whole care about the family friendly image of the Wii being ruined? Shouldn't the only one's who worries about the Wii's image be Nintendo? They don't seem to be concerned, what makes you think you have to save them?

This is DISGUSTING! I can't believe that they're coming out with such a game for the Wii! Murder? Violence? Blood? How pathetic! Whoever designed this game should be wiped out.

I can't believe that I stopped playing No More Heroes to read this.

All this will do is bring more attention to the game in the long run and get more people interested in it. Look what controversy did for GTA III and beyond.

Not that I think the game should be banned, but like it or not, the Wii DOES have a family-friendly image and the reason for this is because Nintendo advertises the Wii as a family-friendly system. See http://www.killscreenpoetry.com for full rant.

"I hope she realises that this would have happened to her no matter what. That she would have ended up lying here, on the floor in my apartment, hands nailed to posts, cheese and broken glass pushed up into her cunt, her head cracked and purple...I would have found her...I'm trying to ease one of the hollow plastic tubes from the dismantled habitrail system up into her vagina, forcing the vaginal lips around one end of it, and even with most of it greased with olive oil, it's not fitting in properly. During this the jukebox plays Franki Valli singing "The Worst That Could Happen" and I'm grimly lip-syncing to it, while pushing the Habitrail tube up into this bitch's cunt. I finally have to resort to pouring acid around the outside of the pussy so that the flesh can give way to the greased end of the habitrail and soon enough it slides in, easily. "I hope this hurts you," I say.
The rat hurls itself against the glass cage...(For the last five days I purposefully starved it.) I set the glass cage down next to the girl and maybe because of the scent of the cheese the rat seems to go insane...The rat doesn't need any prodding...The thing moves effortlessly on newfound energy, racing up the tube until half of its body disappears, and then after a minute-its rat body shaking while it feeds-all of it vanishes, except for the tail, and I yank the habitrail tube out of the girl, trapping the rodent. Soon even the tail disappears. The noises the girl is making are, for the most part, incomprehensible...
...I use a chainsaw and in a matter of seconds cut the girl in two with it. The whirring teeth go through skin and muscle and sinew and bone so fast that she stays alive long enough to watch me pull her legs away from her body-her actual thighs, what's left of her mutilated vagina-and hold them up in front of me, spouting blood, like trophies almost...and finally before she dies, I force a knife uselessly up her nose until it slide out of the flesh on her forehead, and then I hack the bone off her chin. She has only hald a mouth left and I fuck it once, then twice, three times in all. Not caring whether she's still breathing or not I gouge her eyes out, finally using my fingers. The rat emerges headfirst-somehow managed to turn itself around inside the cavity-and it's stained with purple blood (I also notice where the cainsaw took off about half of it's tail) and I feed it extra Brie until I feel I have to stomp it to death, which I do. Later the girl's femur and left jawbone lie in the oven, baking, and tufts of pubic hair fill the Steuben crytsal ashtray, and when I light them they burn very quickly."
-American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis, Page 315-317

This book has no age rating anywhere on the cover so I guess it's fine if everyone reads it. Only about £8 in your local bookshop. Described by the Sunday Times as 'Serious, clever and shatteringly effective.'

Are saying we don't have a problem with censorship?

Seriously, the Mail loves this shit, they are a right wing newspaper whose readership revel in the sensationalised, reactionary bullshit they purvey. People want to be outraged as they dunk soldiers in their soft boiled egg, so they can march into work and regurgitate their latest opinion. The Mail always has and always will try to create public outcry at absolutely every opportunity and violent video games fit this bill perfectly. There is a age rating system for a reason. U do not go Christmas shopping for your young children and buy them a bottle of vodka, 20 fags and Backdoor sluts 9 on dvd (unless u happen to be the best parents in the world) so y is it ok to complain about a video game with an appropriate age rating. The article claims Madworld to be the 'most violent video game ever'. Seriously, anyone remember Thrill Kill? This article was written by a proffesional journalist and yet fails absolutely to make one solid point. It's main complaint is that it will ruin the Wii's shitty casual family image. The irony is this game doesnt appear to be a big realease, and would probably have appeared in shops with a minimum of media coverage, but the Mail in their wisdom have printed an advert for it in hundreds of thousands of papers that now sit in as many homes. i believe it's irresponsible for a national newspaper to be this ignorant of a matter on which they are reporting.
