UK charts: World at War can't be shaken, Resistance 2 not so successful photo

Another week, another round of UK chart positions, and yet another top slot for Activision's Call of Duty: World at War. It's hardly surprising that a World War II game does so well in the UK. After all, WWII was the last time Britain was ever good at something.

Resistance 2 seems to be following LittleBigPlanet's footsteps by having respectable sales, but failing to set the charts on fire like its rivals' exclusives have done. While Gears of War 2 and anything on the Wii have all enjoyed top positions, Insomniac's PS3-exclusive shooter debuts at number ten.

It is interesting to note that Lips, Microsoft's big "casual" title that was supposed to bring in all sorts of new consumers, failed to chart in the top twenty at all. Given the huge success of SingStar in the UK, this makes it doubly interesting. Not that I expect Microsoft to take the hint and focus on its own market. I'm sure MS will continue desperately aping the Wii.

Otherwise, it's the usual suspects of FIFA 09, Need for Speed and Brain Training. Hit the jump for the full chart listing.

  1. Call of Duty: World at War
  2. Need for Speed: Undercover
  3. FIFA 09
  4. Mario Kart Wii
  5. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training
  6. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
  7. Tomb Raider: Underworld
  8. Wii Play
  9. Guitar Hero: World Tour
  10. Resistance 2
  11. Wii Music
  12. Wii Fit
  13. Fallout 3
  14. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
  15. Carnival: Funfair Games
  16. Lego Indinia Jones: The Original Adventures
  17. Gears of War 2
  18. Football Manager 2009
  19. Kung Fu Pands
  20. Lego Batman: The Videogame

Urgh. As a English gamer I often find our charts to be a bit sad.

It isn't so bad this time round but it's still annoying to see so many Wii mini-game games up there.

Why isn't the name of the article:

"UK charts: World at War can't be shaken, Lips not so successful"

Batty:

Uh, because Resistance 2 is more relevant to my readers' interests?

Gotta love an armchair blogger. I know you're just going to bat for the poor defenseless PS3, but do try and understand Destructoid's demographic before telling me how to do my job. <3

I still think Lips is the right thing for Microsoft to do strategically. I'd suggest it's absense in the top 20 is due to two things -

1) It's like Singstar - a slow burner that achieves sustained sales over time rather than massive peaks in week one.
2) The fact that Microsoft spent no money at all trying to market it to those casual gamers they know it exists. All the PR effort (not much) seems to be around NXE, which isn't going to shift any units in the UK given the lack of media streaming.

"WWII was the last time Britain was ever good at something."

I thought America were the only allied force involved in wwII?...

Was that picture taken at a brittish bondage party?

The guy in the back looks like a slave to me.

Surely Entertainment UK's failure to get Resistance 2 into some stores had an impact on the chart position?

I remember a few weeks ago Brain Training wasn't at number 1 in the DS charts. It was Professor Layton, but then the next week Brain Training went right back up there.

I'm surprised how high Wii Music is in the multiplatform and Wii charts. I guess a lot of people just bought it because it was a new "charming" Wii title but there's no word from their reaction. I'd like to hear a few reviews from that demographic.
They can't really think those terrible midi versions of such songs as "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" are good, can they?

@Heretic, you think you can come in at the last minute and claim all of it was up to you? Yeh, cause the Polish didn't decipher the Enigma Code or anything :P

@Jim That's not true! Britain won the world cup once, and don't forget the mediagasm over winning the Rugby too.

Wait, hasn't resistance 2 only been out for a few days? I thought that the charts were released on Thursdays, the day before new release day...

I'm also surprised that Singstar Abba isn't in the charts considering that Mama Mia is now out on DVD

Why would you pick up a 360 with Lips, if you can just continue buying those Singstar games for the PS2?

Most people in the USA never pay any attetion to the UK since they are not important anyway.. So I do not feel anything as a USA, and temp japanese resident Inferior does not register.

So I can't since I forget they are there kinda like canada but farther away and with less hocky and more words that do not make sense. Where is the UK again?

I find the japanese more easy people to understand, and hell they got damn walking and running robots and "hard gay" I can not ignore them.

Sucks for Sony, and sad. I bought Little Big Planet and Resistance 2. Both were disappointments in their own way, but still kicked ass too. Hasn't stopped my daily Gears 2/Halo 3 sessions though.

Whoooops, apparently Entertainment UK has now gone into administration! I wonder what that means for getting supplies of Resistance 2 into UK stores?

Strange. I got bored real quick with LBP and sold it, but R2 is just as fun as WaW. Hard to say why folks react the way they do.

I know they mean something to the big execs... but when Little Britain gets to No 1, whilst Okami lingers at the bottom, you know never to trust the public, ever.

Democracy does not work.

The F-ing obvious reason for the comparison is that they are similar games and the fact that resistance was bragged as the best thing since gears of war 2!!!
The Yank tanks helped us good old boys out at the dieing stages which we are thankfull for, however as a force the US are rubbish, what wars have you actually won on your own?? look at Naam and the Gulf..nadda nothing! Actually the only war you have won was Arnie against the Predator...oh no he is Austrian!! theres a reason why USA rhyms with ghey!

Jim, any idea what days the sales charts cover? Resistance 2 released 11/28, so it didn't get a full week. Some people are saying R2 only got its first day of sales included on the charts, but I can't verify that.

I wasn't impressed by the beta and would never buy R2, but I think the take on this news is a bit misleading.

I think the USa kicked the brittish ass to win indipendance in 1775.

But i was not there maybe I am wrong and they tell me lies.

I like to think it went like this.

No, I think the last time England was good at anything was making motorcycles, which stopped being great shortly after WWII.
