UK Charts: Soccer is better than soccer AND soccer photo

This is absolutely amazing. Two weeks ago, FIFA 10 was number one in the charts. One week ago, PES 2010 was number one in the charts. This week, Football Manager 2010 is number one in the charts. That's right, folks -- a soccer game that replaced a soccer game has been replaced ... by a soccer game! I tell you, only in Britain ...

As usual, sports make up a big portion of the chart, broken up by such titles as a debuting Grand Theft Auto Episodes: Liberty City and Borderlands, which has slipped to number nine in the charts but is still doing surprisingly well. PS3 exclusive EyePet is still hovering in the very low regions of the chart, which is a shame, as it looked to be both an amazing bit of tech and a potential holiday smash hit. Either way. I'm having a copy of it shipped from the UK for review, so keep reading Destructoid for the skinny on that.

It's also worth noting that DJ Hero debuted at number 20. While it still charted, I dare say that it's selling far less than Activision would have expected. It's unusual to see a big Activision game debut anywhere below number five. Perhaps the "jump the shark" nature of the product really did turn people off this time, and Activision has misjudged the market's tolerance for plastic toy instruments.

Ponder that, if you will, and hit the jump for the full UK chart.

  1. Football Manager 2010
  2. Wii Fit Plus
  3. FIFA 10
  4. Forza Motorsport 3
  5. Pro Evolution Soccer 2010
  6. GTA Episodes: Liberty City
  7. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
  8. Tekken 6
  9. Borderlands
  10. Wii Sports Resort
  11. WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010
  12. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
  13. Need for Speed: Shift
  14. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
  15. Lego Batman: The Videogame
  16. Professor Layton and Pandora's Box
  17. Wii Fit
  18. EyePet
  19. Super Smash Bros: Brawl
  20. DJ Hero

Even though that's about American Football it's still applicable.

Can't believe Uncharted 2 has fallen so far from grace. It had great first week sales (for a PS3 exclusive) and I thought it would continue...

What a wanky comment HJD. All of those games are good. If you don't like football they're not to your taste, but other than you're just being a tit.

*prole-fest*

You prick.

I'm curious as to how many people bought all three of the soccer games listed at the top.
I like soccer/football, but I imagine that the fanaticism of some folks is like a mountain crushing an ant compared to my own meek fandom.

Nothing "prole-fest"-y about the worlds most popular sport. Also, Football Manager and the other two a vastly different games. It's like saying it's shocking that CoD (not 4 obv) knocked Company of Heroes off the top spot.

Just to let you know, that picture is of American football fans. The jersey the guy has on is for Ohio State University. He has the trademark buckeyes around his neck.

Come on Jim, get your pics right!

Yay A Pariah is me! Anyway, just trying to say (obviously badly) is that all those games are multi-sequal, derivative, mass-market games, none of ehic hi have any interest at all in playing nor owning.

Halloween hangovers are obviously making everyone super-tetchy.

I hope DJ hero isn't forgotten too quickly, I bought it day 1 and me and my girl friend have been playing that thing like crazy everyday since then. When we're not playing it though I'm on Tekken 6 and Uncharted 2 as well. This is a great season to be a gamer!

I find something hilarious about the purchases my fellow Brits make. Maybe it's because I'm that one Brit who sits in the corner and hates on sports, I dunno.

Also I'm somewhat glad Eyepet isn't doing well; not saying it's a bad game or anything (I don't have a PS3 yet so I can't judge), it's just that those things are fucking creepy looking. Almost every screen or image I've seen of the creatures from the game shows naught but a soulless hellbeast birthed in the Uncanny Valley. The less I see of those things, the better.

I always get amused when people make caustic remarks, and then defend them by saying "they're just my opinions." Amazing how something can jump from being "prole-fest rubbish" to "a game I have no interest in owning" with only one person calling it out.

Anyways, can anyone more familiar with the soccer (fine, football) games on this list care to enlighten me on the difference between them? The only one I've ever really seen is FIFA.

@ndschroede23: PES and FIFA10 are your "Madden" style games where you control the players on the field (or pitch). Whatever...

Football Manager, on the other hand, is a "management simulation" where you take the role of the manager (head coach/GM) of any of thousands of teams in dozens of leagues around the world, and then try and win championships and such.

My impression is there's a manager mode in FIFA as well. I assume "Football Manager" is much more nuanced and in-depth in its managerial simulation?

I can guess as to what next week's sales will be.
Begins in CoD.

Also, football games are shit that's just copy-pasted from the last year. Essentially you could release the same game with just a few characters swapped around teams, and people would still flock to it in droves. Fucking idiots.

@ndschroede23: Exactly. FIFA has a manager mode, but it's rudimentary compared to Football Manager. In addition to FIFA, EA also publishes the FIFA Manager series, which is in the same genre as Football Manager.

im glad im not the only one that recognized that as ohio state football fans. at first glance i was like that looks like an ohio state jersey so i looked closer and saw the buckeyes. made me happy except that its taken after a loss.

JonB - If you follow football, like a lot of Brits (and just about every country on the planet) do, those changes are quite important. They do make gameplay changes, and though they may be subtle to the lesser enthusiast, anyone into the nuances of the beautiful game - and trust me there are tons - notices these changes. Also the movement of players around teams, the new kits, and tons of other stuff make the updating of these games not only lucrative for their publishers, but also compelling to their fans. And just to even up the score: You fucking idiot

2. Fifa

I'm amazed that a -Manager game is at the top. That's more surprising to me than simply having a couple of soccer titles on the list -- it's like having "Excel Spreadsheet Master 2010" at the top of the charts.

Now before you whip out the flamers, I happen to love Championship Manager and want to try FIFA Mgr and Football Mgr...I'm just surprised that so many other ppl feel the same way!!
