Last week was one of the biggest release weeks of the year so far, with Portal 2, Mortal Kombat and SOCOM 4 all hitting the streets. Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat have both managed to succeed, capturing the first and second chart sports respectively.
Unfortunately, SOCOM 4 has not fared so well, failing to crack the top twenty at all.
This is unusual for a PS3 exclusive in the UK, with such games often making it into the top five. It seems highly probable that the PlayStation Network outage has had a dire effect on the game's sales. Online is SOCOM 4's biggest selling point, so it's hardly surprising consumers may be waiting before picking it up.
Whether sales do indeed spike when Sony gets its act together remains to be seen, but I have a feeling Zipper just got screwed hard by the recent shenanigans.
In any case, check out the full chart below.
- Portal 2
- Mortal Kombat
- Call of Duty: Black Ops

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
No.
For example, five of my posts are live on the site right now. Two of them have ties to the PSN outage because the speculation is legitimate. Three out of the five do not have ties to the PSN outage because they have no relation at all.
That is how writing works.
You can't run and gun in those game cause you'd get your arse shot
I've held off on buying Portal Kombat due to the PSN outages. I just hope they get it sorted out soon. In the meantime I've been catching up on Trine and trophy hunting.
Do you know Andy Peters is in Toy Story 2?
Another fun fact.........a bit later on.
The next Socom just needs to be a reboot.
I'll check back on things when Sony either offers me something free for being down or when Uncharted 3 comes out. See you in Novemeber.
Anyways, back to the original point: There's nothing wrong with this article. It's speculation and nothing more. Solid and fact-based speculation.
I'm pretty sure it's unreasonable price tag had a big impact on its sales, that and the lack of psn....
Also, congratulations to codies! 6th is a pretty nice spot for flashpoint!
But I forgot we dont matter.
I think you have a persecution complex, son. Nobody was being a "fuck" in any of the articles posted today. I am merely offering a potential explanation for what are two unusual sales situations. I could provide alternative reasons, but none of them are particularly flattering to the PS3.
So far, you're being a bigger fuck and showing more obsession than anybody else. If you don't like PSN-related articles, you could always not read them. At the very least, commenting on them -- thus helping ensure they become worthwhile posts for the site from a business perspective -- is just fucking stupid if you want them to stop.
so now if any ps3 exclusive will get bad score or won't sell, sony fanboys will blame hackers?
tried yesterday Mortal Kombat at my friends house. still broken fighting mechanics - ok, this is the first MK title with actual fighting mechanics in it and not just unballanced piece of shit like all past titles in this franchise. campaign is a joke with constantly cheating AI that will constantly pull off moves and do things impossible to do as those characters from the player perspective. this game is cheap, broken and proves that well-known brand sex and violence will sell anything. game sucks even more than Marvel vs Capcom 3.
Doing my job is not an obsession, genius.
OR ... I am not so arrogant as to think that one review has this major an effect on sales.
Y'know, could be that. Could be that.
"Or else amateur writers like myself will constantly laugh and realize they are one step closer to replacing you."
... is hilarious. Given your inability to split up blocks of text and use brackets properly, I'd say the "amateur" part of your statement is definitely correct. I invite you to try and replace me, son. The very idea is so absurd it's almost worth me stepping down just to see you attempt to do my job.
Yet you're arrogant enough to defend the influence of one article. LOL, that wasn't my point, Jimmy. My point was that you gave S4 a poor review. Wouldn't a "poor game" translate to "poor sales"? That's what I was expecting you to say, but nope. You are now acting as if S4 is a decent game who's sales are suffering from a PSN outage. Just goes to show you know you wrote a controversial article on purpose for shock value. Kinda like my troll posts here. Take a jab to stir up controversy, and hope it boosts traffic. Thanks for taking part in this little social experiment.
You worry about brackets and splitting up blocks of text with your shady writing practices. And I'll concentrate on content that gamers can take seriously.
And hit me up when you take your next vacation and I'll fill your spot. ;)

First of all, unlike the rest of Europe, isn't the 360 more popular in England? Or at least closer to parity? And how has SOCOM traditionally sold there?
As far as Portal 2 selling better on the 360, that cannot be blamed on PSN being down, as the 360 version had more pre-orders before launch. We already knew it would sell more copies than the PS3 version.
Simple rule of thumb: First person games sell better on the 360, fighting games sell better on the PS3. If a game appeals only to a western audience, then it will likely sell better on the 360.
You do that, kid. I'm sure you'll be the next Adam Sessler.
'Wouldn't a "poor game" translate to "poor sales"?'
Is that how it works? Games fail for lots of different reasons, often with mainstream mediocre games still managing to sell well and critcally acclaimed niche games falling to the wayside.
Socom 4 still averaged 66 on metacritic which is unlikely to fully explain why a game in a long-running PS3 franchise completely failed to sell in a market where the PS3 typically does better than elsewhere. If it had been panned with an average review score along the lines of what Jim had given it then it would've been understandable, so interpreting your remarks as singling out Jim's score has some sense to it.
Also good to see the UK sales chart not as embarrassing as it usually is. Which is very.
1. He works on a fan site.
2. He is not paid for his journalistic mastery.
3. He actually takes the time to argue with his site’s users rather than chock it up as constructive criticism (something real writers actually appreciate).
4. His reviews are so skewed to his personal opinion that he feels the need to defend them weeks later in unrelated articles.
Sorry, I haven’t posted on an internet forum for years; but Jim Sterling is just a big enough douche to deem it necessary. I can’t wait for his reply calling out my use of a semicolon, but don’t bother, I won’t reply as I’m at a real job in the gaming industry at the moment.
