UK Charts: Modern Warfare 2 ... 'nuff said photo

This week's UK Chart listing should shock absolutely nobpdy. The winner of the crown, and the winner of the crown for the next few months, is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Evil publisher Activision's latest chart-smashing success is sure to stay in the top for quite some time. Will it beat the mammoth run that World at War had last year? All signs point to yes.

In any case, this week's UK Chart is notable for its lack of surprise all round. In addition to the predictable Modern Warfare 2, we have nothing but the usual suspects: Wii Sports Resort, FIFA 10, Wii Fit Plus, etcetera, etcetera, Peter Cetera.

Hit the jump for the full list!

Why do you guys report on the British game charts like every week yet not the American ones?

Thank Ant and Dec with their stupid adverts for those Wii sales. Actually, don't. Just don't.

@PJMan

No-one's here for the charts dude, you're here for the funny picture of British buffoonery.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure the guy on the left in the picture used to live on my street.

I'm willing to bet that the original Modern Warfare is in the charts due to the amount of mums buying the wrong one for their 7 year old kids.

Hell, I think I went to school with the one on the right.

Also, is it possible for L4D2 to beat MW2?

(no, it's really not)

I was amazed by the amount of little kids with parents at the midnight launch. I really wanted to ask them, "Would you let your little lad there watch a porno?"

British parents have no concept of age ratings on games. I advised a colleague not to buy it for her 11 year old son, she replied "my boy knows what's real and what's not" - my response secured one less kiddie on XBL - (SPOILER) "You burn alive at one point."

I think British parents are all under the impression that their kids are little angels sent from God, born with a fully matured personality and a perfect sense of right and wrong.

All while they're out happy slapping strangers and drinking cider till they puke.

At least Professor Layton's getting some love, maybe that will speed up the translation process. I needs me some more Laytons, and Japan's gots em.
In other news, maybe with Layton being on the charts so often, we'll start seeing more gentlemen in these pictures?

Obligatory comment:

Those thugs in the picture have blatantly got 360's. Probably just out of court, going home to call some other kids on LIVE "cunts".

/fanboyishness.

Eh some kids aren't little shits and can play mature rated games without becoming delinquents, all parents may think their kids are 'little angels' but only the few decent parents are actually correct in thinking their kid doesn't suck.

Yeah I'm talking about me. Whad you wanna fide aboud it?

maybe for a month or two instead of towny looking dudes, the UK game chart posts could contain pictures of overweight english kids that obviously played far too many videogames when they were growing up and didnt get much exercise. How funny would that be :D

Actually, I can't think of any people I know who game and are fat. Many gamers I would have thought would be malnurished and sleep deprived.

Being British, I can honestly say that fat people piss me off. The people that show up on these story headers will probably end up fat like their parents.

@Tarvu, are you defending your choice to buy your kids (or is it yourself) games that are designed and legally rated for people older than them (you)?

Violent games, as much as they are perfectly harmless for ADULTS to play, can damage the developing personality of children. Just because little Timmy is "grown up" in your eyes doesn't mean that playing Manhunt or watching Saw isn't going to have some kind of effect on his developing personality and sense of right or wrong.

Giving underage kids adult rated games is not only damaging the kids, but damaging the Adults right to have true Adult games.

Now don't get me wrong, i consider a 16 year old an adult, but no way is an 11 year old an adult. i reitterate, to bypass the "gaemz are 4 kidz" glasses, ask youself the question, would i let him watch a porno? - 16, sure, 11, not so much.

@Munkee - Food is so fucking expensive over here that overweightness (word?) is not so prevalent.

The Normal distribution is king of all variation, and it is why I believe that age restrictions for everything are highly questionable. Some people are very mature for their ages when young and other people, the kinds of which we can see atop this article, will be idiots for a long time.

I particularly feel this way about alcohol, the way children are influenced as they develop means that most teenagers are complete tools about it.

@Sexualchocolate: I will see your argument, but it is still up to the person playing. It's unfortunately not a "one size fits all" solution. When I was 11, I played the first N64 Turok (and even did some rather sadistic things, like juggle corpses with the grenade launcher in slow motion with the blood effects so I could follow it), and to this day, I'm not some amoral prick who could strange a living creature to death and enjoy watching the life drain out of it. Hell, even the sight of blood bothers me. Of course, I readily knew it was a game and wasn't real. With the ever-marching advance of technology, killing very realistic people may very well translate into killing very real people. I dunno. But it's possible.

Not to say that cartoon violence hasn't spawned its own troubles, just saying.

It is a problem, though. I don't like kids playing games rated M or the like. Yes, I know I was underage with my example, but I turned out all right. I can't speak for others. =\

Basically what Forte said. Not everyone is the same and even though when I was 11 I didn't really care for blood (In fact I had a fear of knives and cuts) there were some kids who could stand it very easily and not just the usual people I mean the really nice kids. If that kid you're talking about had played Modern Warfare with no problems I doubt Modern Warfare 2 is going to suddenly destroy his perception of reality.

@Everyday Legend

That is my least favourite argument ever. Honestly what's more likely to mess with your head. Being taught that people DIE when you set them on fire or that blowing shit up is funny?

Look at your source material, my son. Turok ain't exactly the shining beacon of realism, now is it? Busting up a velociraptor isn't roasting in your own flesh, I didn't make an argument, just an observation. Go back, reread what I said (all two short sentences of it), and please put the verbal gun down. You have many more people here worth pointing it at.

I was trying to point that out I guess I didn't understand fully what you were trying to say so I apologise. I wasn't trying to attack you at all just point out that unrealistic violence like in Turok could be worse to some than that in Modern Warfare.

Thanks for the debate guys, however I know there isn't a "one size fits all" solution, but there HAS to be some kind of limit on what is for kids and what is for Adults, and when those regulations are systematically ignored they lose all purpose.

Sure if they were followed to the letter some young, yet mature kids would have to go without some games/movies etc, small price to pay. The way it is right now, the few kids whose parents uphold the rules are subjected to 90% of their peers having these 18+ rated products and them being the one's left out.

To be honest, the problem isn't the maturity of the kids, it's the maturity of the parents. When so many people have kids so flippantly these days you have a massive number on what i'd consider "unfit parents" in the UK. These are the parents that don't care if their kids are mature enough to handle a product, they simply want the kid to stop moaning, or to avoid looking mean to other parents.

In a majority of parents of 10/15 year old kids these days allow their parenting to be dictated to them by the kids. Rather than actually BRINGING THEIR KIDS UP!

I think at the sacrifice of having young yet mature kids miss out of certain things a properly enforced age rating can protect the majority.

This is what happens when a Country essentially pays jobless, irresponsible people to have kids, while for those of us who are responsible having kids is a financially crippling experience.

(speaking as someone who's entire income is currently being sucked up to prepare for his soon to be born first Son. My partners income decimated down to maternity allowance and being given all of 2 weeks at further reduced pay to spend with my newborn) - If we were jobless, single parent fucks we would be sitting pretty and probably booking a fucking holiday with all the extra cash we would be due.

Fuck Great Britain - wow tangent much?

the problem is that the videogame stores dont categorize the games. its either a chart game or its not a chart game. thats it!? You would never walk into a video/dvd store and find porn or horror next to cartoons and disney. it makes it perfectly clear what is for kids and what isnt. if you put modern warfare or a rockstar title next to mario or children's title then your asking for trouble! the fault is as much on the store as it is the parent.. there you go, i am capable of constructive criticism :)

for the most part i agree with you. but, you always seem to be of the opinion that all non-working parents are a useless waste of time. You know as well as the rest of us that this country is fucked at the minute. You might live in a wonderful area where there are jobs for everybody who can be bothered to do one. but, in a lot of areas there just aren't jobs. i have some very good friends who have been honest, working people with kids. Now they are unemployed and apparently overqualified for most employers to be interested. All of these people are more than willing to work and are also very good parents. They are now on the dole. It would be nice if you didnt slate these people so hard as they have done nothing wrong.

i do understand the type your talking about and im not trying to fire up an argument. i just think that you often come across far too one sided and if your going to write these things for the whole world to see, then other side needs to be represented

@ Munkee - i agree entirely, there are now 2 types of unemployed people in this country, those that want to work but can't and those that just don't want to.

My comment is all about the latter.

It irritates me that if it wasn't for the fact that we spend so much on paying the way of those that don't want to that we can't afford to help out those that can't properly.

The whole system deters those that should be reproducing from doing so and encourages those that shouldn't to spawn as many cash-cow-kids as they can.

I mean we should be paying employed people far more to have time off to spend with their kids, and to support their kids properly, not giving so much to those who choose not to work so that they can have a better life than the workers. I mean what does it say to the kids that Mummy and Daddy sit on their arses all day and can still afford to buy us nice things and take us on holiday while mr Worker up the road is always out at work and can't afford half the things we have?!

Makes me sick.
