UK Charts: Modern Warfare 2 beats Mario, Assassins Creed photo

Assassin's Creed 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii both released this week, but neither were able to top the might of Modern Warfare 2. They take second and third place respectively, as Activision looks set to repeat the ludicrous success that last year's World at War enjoyed.

Left 4 Dead 2 debuted at a respectable, if not mind blowing, number seven on the chart. Otherwise, sports, fitness and racing games once again have majority control over the list, occupying eleven of the chart's twenty positions.

Hit the jump for the usual numbers.

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  2. Assassin's Creed 2
  3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  4. Wii Sports Resort
  5. Wii Fit Plus
  6. FIFA 10
  7. Left 4 Dead 2
  8. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
  9. Forza Motorsport 3
  10. Lego Batman
  11. F1 2009
  12. Mario Kart Wii
  13. Pure
  14. Pro Evolution Soccer 2010
  15. Professor Layton and Pandora's Box
  16. Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues
  17. Dragon Age: Origins
  18. Need for Speed: Shift
  19. SingStar Take That
  20. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010

Lord knows that New Super Mario Bros. going to stay on the charts for the next year now. It's like Nintendo has some sort of super power.

The predictability of my country is only beaten by the predictability of Jim's UK Chart's headers.

MW2 sales dropped by 86% and it's still number one. :<

Not to complain but had NSMB released just a few weeks earlier it could have owned the charts. Dammit. 3rd isn't bad at all though.

Also those headers still don't deter me from moving to the UK. God I want to move to the UK. I gotta lay off the Indie UK films.

The guy on the right seems to not know what he's actually holding. He's looking very puzzled indeed.

And good to see AC2 at number 2. It really is a brilliant game. MW2 still number one was fairly obvious though.

It's normal for big games to see a huge drop off in sales after the first week tho. So I it's not like 86% should come as a huge shock. :p

Must be a REALLY slow news day.

NSMB Wii is gonna have a lot more longevity in terms of sales than Modern Warefare 2. Weeks, months, even years from now people will very likely still be buying NSMB in healthy numbers, and likely for full retail value, whereas I suspect MW2 will be selling very little compared to its initial release, and what little it sells will be at a diminished retail value.

MW2 is dominating the charts now, but NSMB Wii is gonna STAY on the charts for a very long time.

Was anyone really expecting MW to fall to anything lower than 1st?

I love this dreadful chav header. It's wonderfully self-deprecating.

@PenKaizen

Yeah I was going to say it's an awesome game but if it's selling so damn well why's it so hard to find people playing online?! And in the chance you do find them they're all bumfudge poopsockers who obsess about shaving seconds and give you an earful of curses if you DARE bump into them.

L4D2 was even released a week after MW2 which makes it's place at #7 all the more wonderful.

Well, I stuck to my guns. Only bought it on Sunday when I finally found a pre-owned copy. Activision haven't gotten their greedy paws on my extra fiver!
Though it's depressing that Tekken 6 isn't on there at all while SvR2010, the dullest WWE game ever made, is still hanging in there.

Hey Chaos, I don't remember, but it got pretty far up the ranks, maybe made it to 3? I don't remember. For an exclusive on the smaller install base is pretty impressive. I'm pretty sure it made it further than 7th.

7th place for an exclusive on the big userbase? For the most anticipated racing game yet? Like the best racing game on the console so far? - It's a shame to say the least.

I'm looking forward to seeing where GT will hit, when it finally comes out!

Chocs, it's a shame it didn't make number one, but it was up against Fifa 10 in its first week, and this is England (as the great Shane Meadows would say). It made it to number 2 though, and its number 9 after 5 weeks which is pretty good for a system exclusive (excluding Wii, of course). Uncharted 2 made it to number 2 aswell, but within 3 weeks it was out of the top 20. Of course region favourite install base means that a PS3 exclusive is likely to fare worse than an Xbox exclusive, but I thought U2 may buck the trend on account of its incredible review scores.
