Ugh: Canabalt rip-off gets approved by Apple photo

Seriously, enough with the iPhone clones already. Only last weekend we wrote about the blatant ripping-off of IronHide's flash game Clash of the Olympians by iPhone game Achilles' Defense, and the latter game has since been removed from the App Store.

But now, after the Canabalt devs released their source code under an MIT open source license late last year, another Thai company called PLD Soft has released a clone called Free Running that just got approved by Apple. It was free about an hour ago, and has since been raised to $0.99. Are you kidding me?

Come on now Apple, get your act together. Because any time you're going to say "we have a better marketplace for game developers than Android" in the future, it's just going to look like a joke.

Okay, this is fucking ridiculous. Canabalt has actually been on the store for ages, and wasn't it pretty popular?

I love how Apple rejects useful apps left and right but pushes through every single knockoff without a second glance.

I do not think I have ever seen a more blatant ripoff. Probably produced in some Tai sweatshop by people making .15cents per day. Pathetic. Apple needs to clean up the App Store asap. Between shit like this and all the shady reviews its pretty fucking ridiculous.

Hey, I'm not going to pay £1.19 for Cannabalt. £0.56... Now that's reasonable.

This is balls, no doubt about it. It's not exactly happening every day, so I wouldn't quite say this is Apple's modus operandi. Even so: It should be gone by now.

But isn't "any time you're going to say 'we have a better marketplace for game developers than Android' in the future, it's just going to look like a joke" a little drama-queenish? Are you saying there are no game rip-offs on Android? Or that the iOS store has more of them?

I'd mull that one over a bit.

Maybe with the 1 billion apps out there the person who passed this didn't know about Canabalt. There are many reasons why this could have gotten passed.

After a few days it will be taken off.

As for the people who ripped off the original, I say we give the Canabalt dev's a plane ticket to Thailand to beat some ass.

The app's description says it has been game of the year 2010 in several countries and even quotes a review from Destructoid and other webpages. SRS BSNS

This same dude also released "Free Runner" on April 21. Same (ripped off) game. So, not only did they let this slip through once, but twice!

It could be worse. They could have called it Kanabalt or Schmanabalt.

@RuSH77: Yup, every piece of critical acclaim they take credit for on the page is actually Cannabalt's.

"I bought it last night, and next to Eliss and Dracula it's the best iPhone game I've yet played. The fast pace and one-button gameplay translate perfectly to Apple's ubiquitous little mobile device." -Rev. Burch, Destructoid

I don't see why you're complaining Maurice, Rev clearly liked it....

I hate sticking up for Apple, but this will happen on Android too once it picks up more in Asia, purely for having the virtue of being even more open.

I haven't played Canabalt, so this looks like One Single Life without the one life gimmick to me.

Even worse, this is the second attempt by the company to upload the same game (under a different title, I believe).

People hate to admit it, but even successful iOS games are often clones.

From what I can tell, this isn't a rip-off of Canabalt, it's literally the same code. That isn't a rip-off, it's blatant plagiarism.

You would think that the people in charge of games for the App Store would know their library as well or better than the average Destructoid reader. I barely do any gaming on my iPhone and know this game. It's pretty embarrassing if you ask me. I wonder if things like this will eventually lead to a less open App Store.

Ok, so it looks like iTunes finally wised up and decided to add it to my Apps when I wanted to try it when this thing was still free. The game's about page not only refers to Free Runner like you guys mentioned, but it even appears to have the same credits if slightly altered (I don't own Canabalt):

"Free Runner began as a 5-week experimental game for the Kyles' Experimental Gameplay Project." blablabla "The original Flash Game is available for free online at http://www.adamatomic.com."

Worst part:

"Nash ported Free Runner to the iPhone the following week. Free Runner was developed and published independently for the iPhone by Nash and Adam Lambert under their PLD Soft imprint"

What.
