I agree that the appeal of those two games was probably pretty narrow, but Ico was incredible and I won't hear otherwise, not even from one of its creators.

I'm not sure if you're serious. Fumito Ueda's games are so far away from Call of Duty they'd have to stretch to gain an inch of distance.
I think Ueda's just going hard on himself and wants to commit to making the best game he possibly can as opposed to mainstreaming it.

Actually this scares me a bit. Developers are always hard on their own games so it's probably nothing. But this article reminds me of when the Final Fantasy: CB Wii guys were talking about making a FF game your grandmother could play... Yeah, that didn't turn out so well.
Well.... it's always refreshing when a developer doesn't blame his audience for his game not selling well. (looking at all you 3rd party wii developers)

I'd agree with him to be honest. To someone who doesn't appreciate the artsy, DEEP feel of the games, they'd be extraordinarily dull and boring.
Hell, I hated Ico. It's just getting on the border between artsy and DEEP like the other titles but having them play suitably to keep all audiences happy. Most companies have completely jumped onto the accessibility train because MONEY. I doubt that Ueda'd do the same though.

Never played Ico, but I agree that SoTC is not that great. You don't need to tell me, though, it IS just me.
It would be incredibly nice if the hd version could come out soon, since I can't play my copies on my new ps3 -_-'... Would also be nice if we don't have to wait another 5 years for last guardian... just saying.

I guess perfectionists always strive to do better and see their last work as the weaker product. I thought ICO was epic in every way possible. Never played Shadow, but many people tell me it is amazing.
i wouldn't worry to much, he just wants to make the best game he can come up with(along with his team of course) at least make sure we get the ICO collection this year.

I don't think SotC was designed with broad consumer interest in mind, so it's no wonder it didn't sell well. That didn't stop it from being the best game of last generation. There's something about that game that really resonated with me, but I wouldn't blame anyone for not finding it all that compelling.
Best games I've ever played. Granted, SotC fell a bit short compared to Ico (mainly running through endless empty expanses on a horse that didn't drive right), but still the entire experience was far better then anything else out there

No Ueda, your games didn't sell because they were sort of niche back then, they didn't appeal to mainstream gamers. Not sure about ICO, but Shadow of the Colossus was a pretty great game, the control scheme was the only thing I didn't like about it.
He's not entirely off although Sotc was a good game, it could have used some improvements like a better camera and frame rate
