Ubisoft wants to make its own Final Fantasy photo

Remember a while ago when we talked about Ubisoft's interest in making RPGs? Well, the publisher best known for its huge selection of casual titles has brought up the issue once again, stating plainly that it would like to capture the JRPG market with its own Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest game. No, really.

"People often say that Japan is packed with hardcore gamers, and it’s important to understand what it is they’re looking for," says creative director Alain Corre. "Our mission is to create hit games on the same level as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. We’d like to see everyone in Japan root for us.

"Perhaps someday our efforts will result in a major hit on the level of a Dragon Quest. We have never made any RPGs, a genre Japanese people love. We’ve made shooters, strategy, sports, action, and adventure games, but not any RPGs yet. Still, we’re open to all possibilities. If we can get a quality team of RPG-oriented developers, I’d love to release one. If we have a chance to work with Japanese creators, then I’m sure we can make a game that appeals to the Japanese audience."

More power to Ubisoft. I might not be the biggest fan of the publisher's work, but anyone willing to try something different is fine by me. Looking forward to seeing whatever the European company can pull out of its hat. Let's just hope it's better than Enchanted Arms, eh?

Maybe they should start publishing ATLUS titles? Those have a lot of appeal on the western market as well.

Well if they made a jrpg they could possibly get that "one button does everything" design mentality that they've got such a boner for to work properly.

'"People often say that Japan is packed with hardcore gamers'

Ubisoft are a bit behind the time now.

All Japan is filled with, gamer wise, is stuck in there ways, western snobbing, traditionally jaded gamers.

If 'Hardcore' is a nice way of saying that then Ubisoft are dead on!

They just want a franchise which follow the same base recipe in every game, and at the same time guarantees 1 million sales on release no matter the quality of the game.

That said, I will, and always have, bought FF games at release.

I'm still pissed at Ubisoft for not bringing the 360/PS3 port of NMH here. But being an avid JRPG-er, I'd love to see them try.

@ Strandli - Madden? Call of Duty? Mario? Welcome to video games, that's what the industry does.

The RPG market has been in a slump for the last few years or so. Maybe some fresh blood is just what it needs. I'm hopeful and interested to see what comes out of this.

My prediction is that they will use the Might and Magic name and release a console rpg with anime-style characters.

Out of the more "mainstream" larger game companies that I purchase from, I must say, I own the least amount of games from Ubisoft.....me no likey

Well you better learn Japanese, change your skin color, and rename your studio to Otaku-Sensei Master of Reap Stdio. Represent yourself with half dressed or totally naked Japanese women who really need the money to support their kids by selling their bodies, who's kid ends up catching them naked screwing strangers on a daily basis. To which no one but those who can spot your kids drawing of mommy and stranger missionary styling it on the daily Japanese News channel promoting the talent of 2nd graders artistry at their local school, will actually know about it. This will merely be the pebble upon the mountain to which you have to climb in order to be accepted in Japanese society.

*breath* GO UBISOFT, it's not impossible!

Not to sound harsh or anything, but JRPGs are a far shot from what I remember growing up as a kid (FFVI, Tales of Phantasia, Breath of Fire). I see the direction that JRPGs are going, and I don't like it in the slightest. Lost Odyssey was the exception for me, and if Ubisoft can pull something like that off, then I would gladly take back my first sentence.

The worst part though? Even if Ubisoft did create a beautiful piece of work that appealed mainly to the eastern market, what is the likely hood it would be accepted in the east? Until that day, I'll continue to think the golden age of JRPGs are gone forever, and have been replaced with cliche animes with androgynous whiny characters, with maybe a pinch of gameplay elements here or there.

Yeah. If only Ubisoft had a well-respected, highly visible RPG series to exploit. Something that would have the backing of the gaming press, the fans and the internet at large.

Something with a unique world, memorable protagonist and room for future growth. A game series that went beyond the same tired plotlines of good and evil.

If only.

Hopefully Ubisoft can bring something new and fresh to the, somewhat stagnant, genre. I know that they have been able to revitalize stealth with Splinter Cell, essentially re imagine modern warfare with the features they implemented in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (really what modern war game coming out now doesn't have a UAV now). While I know they have been prone to missteps... many missteps I am hoping that they do something new, exciting, and different instead of copying and pasting something created by a by Square Enix.

Does anybody else feel the saying "Barking up the wrong tree" is really appropriate in this situation.

Don't get me wrong, I like JRPG's a LOT. But there's also a LOT of people who have lost interest in JRPG's.

The difference between Ubisoft is that Square-Enix's development teams is full of masters in every field requiried. Story, Graphics, Music, Engine, Optimisation.

Ubisoft's development teams consists of "Hey! A woman is incharge, stand there and look pretty".

They're free to do as they please, but for the love of God make your own ideas for the game and don't imitate any of the existing RPGs right now. Truth be told, though, that's a tall order.
