The book was released in 2003, and here's part of the synopsis:
The truly astonishing hypothesis, developed by Search International, suggests that at the functional center of the nucleus of every cell is an atemporal Particle of zero mass and infinite capacity for memory a biological singularity. The same Particle is a component of every cell in the body. It is the "fabric of the soul."
The author lets the reader be present right alongside the scientists as they uncover some of the very secrets of Creation, and while test subjects are taken back in time to recall ancestral memories, a process key to proving the existence of the human soul. Intrigue enters the plot as competitors, a foreign government, and a special-interest group learn of Search International's discoveries.
Different thematic tone, but awfully similar concepts. Of they ripped off his idea, give him some compensation, by all means. Ultimately, I wouldn't want the games canceled, though. AC3 is the first game in the series that looks to have enjoyable combat and stealth!!!
This just sounds like a shameless publicity stunt... And the worst thing is that it might work - I kinda want to check out the novel now :/
Anyone read the book? How is it?
I would love to see Ubicrock lose millions over this, and I will laugh even more when they pass that debt along to the people that still choose to support them. That COMPLETE AC3 experience? It's now going to cost you more because that's how these publishers do business.
My AC3 preorder was already cancelled, I switched it to Borderlands 2 instead.
So yeah, suing for some cash money, fair play, I can dig that.
But trying to stop future versions releasing? What a dick.
And I don't think these legal actions come about quickly either. It requires research to make sure that you actually have a case. I don't think he'll win. Probably get a settlement out of court at best. In fact, I highly suspect that his threat to have the third game cancelled is more of a move to force Ubisoft to keep this out of the courts since losing Assassin's Creed would be a huge blow to their company's revenue streams.
Truth be told, I'm no Ubisoft fan, but this seems a little flimsy. Did John Carpenter try to sue Sean Cunningham when he released Friday the 13th? Did Ridley Scott try to sue Will Smith over I, Robot? Many creative properties bear very similar earmarks, and history fiction has its own creative tropes. Until the makers of Twin Peaks sue SWERY for Deadly Premonition, I think there's not much going on here.
I don't think he's a copyright troll, and if there's enough similarities to support his claim I say give him compensation. Don't stop the release of the games though, that a dick move.
Exactly. Let's all let the courts decide...but don't stop ASSCREED III. I probably won't play it but I know other people are invested in the series.
*smacks this guy... in the ear*
Court adjourned, for more slaps.
