Ubisoft: 'Play Haze for yourself' photo

Time was, when a game got a bad review, the publisher would keep its head down and wait a year or two before releasing a sequel. These days, however, with those in the games industry becoming more vocal, it seems that a high-profile game can't escape bad review scores without some ridiculous damage control.

In its bid to cover up for less-than-positive Haze review scores (not least IGN's shocking 4.5), publisher Ubisoft has discredited the review process and urged customers to try Haze for themselves.

"One thing I can already tell about the reviews is that most of the time they are the opinion of only one person and may not reflect the way you will see the game: you have to make your own judgment," stated Ubisoft community manager Wuzzy. While a fair point indeed, let's face it -- if Haze got brilliant scores all round, Ubisoft would be the last company to say "Oh that's just one guy's opinion." It strikes me as quite funny that game companies plaster review scores and quotes all over a game's promo material, but are swift to dismiss reviews as unimportant when they're negative.

Case in point, they keep bringing up Famitsu's positive score, while simultaneously telling us not to bother listening to reviews. Whether Haze is a good game or not isn't the issue for me; I just wish companies would stop rushing to the defense of games when they get bad scores -- suck it up and get to work on the next title, because you're simply embarrassing yourselves and dismissing reviews won't add another million sales. Besides, don't you have Beyond Good & Evil 2 to be green lighting? If you want high review scores, get on that.

I have not been impressed with the demo. But then again according to the disclaimer on it which reads something like this, "the game demo you are playing is for a game that is a work in progress. This demo may not play or look anything like the final game" Why give me a demo that is not going to be like the game, unless them mean that the actual game is not going to suck!

@Skribble

I believe the dialog is crazy on the Mantle side because of the Nectar. They talk about skittles and Leroy jenkins....etc because they see war as a game and something fun becuase of the drugs. They also don't see death as when you kill someone they slowly dissapear.

That is what I have heard, I have not played the full version but if true, once your off Nectar I assume everything would be differrent and serious.

I might end up buying it for the co-op side of things as being able to hop in and out at anytime in gameplasy sounds awesome.

@Demtor

All Blindside and I did was shoot each other in our Nectar Packs and ran around shooting things and looking at butterflies, cause shooting bad guys isn't that fun when you don't care what they're saying and they just run around like morons.

It's not that great, but if you REALLY like co-op, I mean even if it's a co-op through razorblades and alcohol with the lights out, by all means go ahead :P

well they kinda sorta have a point

I mean I've played a few games I loved that got panned (or mediocre) reviews before (most notably Ghosthunter)

still I think I'll probably pass on Haze since I'll be too busy with a little indie game called Metal Gear Solid 4

I feel like them bringing up Famitsu's score is just to aid their argument that the low score from IGN was just one man's take on it. Sure, one guy at IGN thought it was mediocre, but one guy at Famitsu thought it was great. Therefore, you should try it yourself to decide. Sounds reasonable to me.
