Ubisoft officially announces TMNT game, forgets people like games that look good photo

It's been on the radar for ages, but Ubisoft has finally announced that they will be releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the 360, PS2, PSP, DS, GBA, Windows, and the Wii. The game will hit stores on March 13th, just a week before the new CGI movie hits theaters.

As a big fan of all things TMNT back in the day, I can get down with the idea of someone reinvigorating the franchise. And from what I had seen of the Turtles game in action, things weren't looking so bad. The combat seemed tight and the thought of teaming up with a buddy, ordering a greasy pineapple/anchovie pizza, and yelling things like "cowabunga" and "radical" started to seem fairly appealing.

But what on earth is with the way this game looks? The screenshots provided are from the next-gen version of the game, running at 720p. You're not serious, are you Ubisoft? Because you might want to think about filling out some pink slips and giving those out as holiday bonuses.

Hit the jump for the press release.

Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers announced that its TMNT(TM) video game, based on the upcoming CGI feature-length film starring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is being developed for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, the
PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, Windows® PC, Game Boy® Advance, Nintendo DS(TM), Nintendo GameCube(TM) and Wii(TM). The TMNT video game is being created by Ubisoft developers in its world-class Montreal and Quebec City studios and will be available at retail stores nationwide March 13, 2007, just ahead of the release of the feature-length film March 23.

The new TMNT video game uses the same dark and dangerous environments and adventurous themes featured in the new TMNT CGI film being developed by Imagi Animation Studios and Mirage Licensing. The TMNT movie takes place in a New York City plagued by secretive villains and strange, otherworldly creatures. Faced with these perils, the Turtles will experience their most trying time as heroes and as a family, as Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo lose their focus and struggle to maintain their unity and ninja discipline. In the movie and in the highly immersive video game adventure, it's up to Leonardo and the faithful father figure Splinter to reunite the band of brothers and save New York City from a monstrous evil that lurks around every corner. Video game players will engage in over-the-top acrobatic navigation, collaborative combat and powerful fighting moves.

"The TMNT movie is all about the emotions associated with family and teenage angst," said Nick Harper, creative director of the TMNT game at Ubisoft's Montreal development studio. "We've taken that philosophy and turned it into gameplay mechanics that will be fun and challenging. The direction for the all new TMNT movie and game is a darker, more realistic Turtle experience. Gamers will embody all four Turtles from the big screen to engage in over-the-top action sequences and intense ninja combat. We think this game will appeal to kids, teens and adults alike."

Video Game Features Include:
Intense Ninja Fighting: Harness the power of Ninjitsu and become a master of combat. Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are playable and each have unique acrobatic moves, weapons and combat skills, such as Michelangelo's fast nunchuck face slap and Raphael's powerful Sai throw.

Unique Acrobatic Navigation: The Turtles jump from rooftop to rooftop, scale tall buildings, dive into sewers and race through every corner of the city to confront their enemies.

Powerful Tag-Team Moves: Together the Turtles can team up to reach locations unattainable alone, or defeat the enemy.

Diverse Enemies and Bosses: Characters from the movie and the original comic book series - including the Purple Dragon Street Gang and the infamous Foot Clan - and a whole new group of enemies creep out of the shadows to face the Turtles.

Ubisoft's TMNT video game is being created under a licensing agreement with Mirage Licensing, Inc. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are represented for merchandising by 4Kids Entertainment. Horrible graphic style... or lack thereof. I watched TMNT growing up and it didn't look anythign as crummy as this... Tsk, tsk Ubisoft.

Ubisoft can't seem to do anything right anymore as long as it doesn't include some form of squad based combat.

It's meant to be modeled after the new CG movie. Still looks like crap, but that's where the new stylized designs come from.

Not much they can do about the style, since it just matches the graphic style of the movie, but the quality is horrible. This wouldn't even be taking advantage of the Wii's graphical capabilities, let alone the 360's.

man and you people call yourselves turtles fans? the "new" art style that they are using for the CG movie (and i think a more recent animated series?) is a throwback to the ORIGINAL TMNT comic by eastman and laird. do yourself a favor and grab one of their graphic novels. all of them wore red, there was actual story lines and it wasnt all about pizza and cowabungas.

now i suppose the gfx in the game could be a little tighter, but in an effort to mimic the "new"-retro art style, this is what you get.

somebody call the wahmbulance

yeah, thats leonardo

What a shame, the original arcade was awesome for its time. An other franchise ruined.

I don't think the style is the issue here. It's the quality. Jaggies and shitty looking textures galore!

What worries me most is that these are the screens they chose to show off. I haven't seen a game that looks that bad since early ps2 games.

This doesn't look like the original comics...these turtles look a lot more pathetic than the original turtles from the comics. If they really made them look like the Eastman & Laird comics they'd look badass...these turtles just look retarded, all scrawny & stuff...

I really don' think it looks that terrible. I just hope it plays better than those ps2/xbox arcade type games that sucked ass.

How they should look! The turtles are big badasses...not scrawny no-muscle geckos.

I don't have a problem with the style (the new trailer for the film looked pretty cool), but those are some pretty low poly models for the next-gen version.

No four person multiplayer mentioned? Tsk tsk...

Apparently, the people developing this game haven’t heard of textures. I love how the Turtles’ skin is this smooth, green surface, and the stone bricks just look like polished plastic.

1) Hell yes, Lego TMNT ftw.
2) What the fuck have they done to my beloved childhood icons?

There hasnt been a good TMNT game since the arcade game that let everyone join in and was just a sidescrolling beat-em-up.
