Ubisoft officially announce Teenage Mutant Nintendo Turtles Wii title photo

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but Ubisoft has just announced that it will be releasing an all-new, original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for the Wii this fall.

As we knew, the Wii-exclusive will be developed by Game Arts, the folks responsible for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The title will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Ninja Turtles, in what Ubisoft is calling a "Shell-ebration." The release will also tie in with "new and exciting products and experiences for TMNT fans."

Also, here are some screens. Small ones, that don't tell us much about the game, other than that it will feature turtles who are ninjas. Ubisoft gives no official name for the game, but it's interesting to note that the screens sent to use were labeled "TMNT Smash Up." Bad name or worst name ever? You decide.

For more info, check out the January issue of Nintendo Power. Or you know, just check out the info from when we originall picked up this story last December.

Yeah, just to recap, Ubisoft said "Shell-ebration."

UBISOFT® CELEBRATES 25th ANNIVERSARY OF TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES® WITH LAUNCH OF NEW VIDEO GAME

SAN FRANCISCO – January 26, 2009 – Today Ubisoft announced that it will launch an all-new, original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles® (TMNT®) video game – the first that is not tied to a TMNT® movie, television show or comic book – which will be a four-player action fighting title. The game is being developed by Game Arts, noted for working on the critically acclaimed Super Smash Bros.(TM) Brawl for Wii(TM). Scheduled for release in fall 2009, the video game will be a key event in the year-long "Shell-ebration” of the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles® which, in addition to the video game launch, will include new and exciting products and experiences for TMNT® fans in the U.S. and around the world.
The success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles® in various media has been sustained over the last 25 years with numerous "bests,” including: the best-selling video game on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in 2007; and in the late '80s and early '90s, the No.1-rated Saturday morning TV show in the US; the No.1-rated daily syndicated animated TV strip for children; the No.1 Nintendo Entertainment System(TM) and Game Boy(TM) Advance video game in the world and the No.1 live touring arena show in the U.S.

"We're really excited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first TMNT® comic and we have a number of radical 'Shell-ebration' events planned for 2009,” said Gary Richardson, CEO of Mirage Studios. "The awesome new video game that Ubisoft will release in 2009 is an important part of celebrating this Turtles milestone with fans around the world.”

"There is no better tribute to the Turtles than the creation of a brand-new game that will help to launch the next 25 years of success,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. "It's our pleasure to partner again with Mirage as part of the worldwide birthday celebration for the Turtles.”

More details about the game can be found in the January 2009 TMNT® cover story issue of Nintendo Power magazine in the U.S.

You can't say shell-ebration without sounding like Sean Connery.

I'm actually interested in this. It could be a good Wii title that isnt a waggle-fest cheap cash-in like most of the other games on the Wii.

If this is as good as Smash, I am sold. The series has plenty of great characters for a solid fighting game experience. Although, my hopes are not up yet.

@IroN1c:

Thanks, you're so helpful. While we're at it, if you're going to have a Rock Band user icon, you should know that "Rock Band" is actually two words.

All I want out of this game is Krang in his rosy diaper, metal suspenders, radical shades, and with a tuning fork coming out of his head.

Best character design ever.

Yikes, wasn't that a bit harsh?

Anyway, I'm totally into this game. TMNT4LIFE.

@Krow:

Nah. I only bite because I love.

And I'm down with this, too, I guess. Been a huge Turtle fan since, well, the beginning of time. Never a big Smash Bros. fan, so maybe I'm not down with this. Now I'm confused.

If this were to be faithful to Eastman and Laird's vision (doubtful) , and on 360, I'd check it out. Yeah, a nice surprise indeed.

@ Nick and Krow:
Nah, that wasn't too harsh. Nick got me on that "RockBand" thing cause I made that mistake three times in my profile. So its 2 points for me and 3 for him.

I think I might have found a new friend to play a game with.... :D

Hopefully this game delivers where Brawl didn't. I'd love a good Smash Bros. like game with good online play and a map creator with more than 3 backgrounds to choose from.

Hmm. I wonder how similar it will be to Brawl, I don't really need two of those games...Especially when one is full of Nintendo mascots already. Wish this was an arcade beat em up ala Turtles in Time...

I'll keep an eye on this.

I was raised on TMNT when I was younger and Turtles in Time is my favorite arcade beat-em-up ever so my interested is definitely perked. The fact that it is the Smash Bros. guys and is not tied to any specific movie or series makes me cautiously optimistic.
