Ubisoft making a fighting game and an RPG photo

Ubisoft is known, generally, for three things: Awful Wii shovelware, awful DS shovelware, and Assassin's Creed. You don't often see fighting games or RPGs associated with the huge European publisher, but all that's about to change as the company strives to explore new genres.

Chairman Yves Guillemot was at the BMO Capital Markets digital entertainment conference where he revealed the new genres, along with a Might & Magic MMO and Trackmania 2. He also said that casual games were on the way Project Natal and the Sony Wiimote. So, Ubisoft will soon be known for awful 360 and PS3 shovelware, too.

Anyway, new genres from Ubi. Good or bad?

Wow. Truer words have never been spoken.
Though I still remember them for Prince of Persia.

Surely Ubi is also known well for its Tom Clancy games and the Prince Of Persia Series.

Hey, if Ubisoft's shovelware gives them enough money to make more quality Tom Clancy, Assassins Creed and Prince of Persia titles, then I have no problem with that at all.

I will only buy these if they have Rabbids in them. That's my new policy for all Ubisoft games.

Actually, a Rabbids RPG would be pretty awesome. I want to equip an epic plunger. And cast a Rank 3 BWAAAAH.

You also forgot Rayman, the Rabbids, GRAW. And to be fair, most of the shovelware is published by Ubi, not developed by them.

I don't know about their other stuff, but I have to agree with the others that the Rabbids franchise is a lot of fun.

while not developed by them directly, they are behind no more heroes, and red steel 2, so that's a feather or two in the cap.

What about Tom Clancy's franchise?

Tom Clancy series of games(that's about 8 billion games), Rayman Rabbids, Settlers series, World in Conflict, PRince of Persia series, IL-2 Sturmovik, The Far Cry series, The F1 racing series, Heroes of Might and Magic, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, the Brothers in Arms series, The Anno series..

I mean, what more do you want? That's about as diverse as you can get and none of those are shovelware.

My main point of that post btw.. other then wondering how people could possibly forget all of those titles, is that they are obviously not ashamed of venturing into new genres. So, sounds about right to me.

Jim, wtf? Ubisoft does tons of stuff, and while not everything shines like gold, there are a lot of good games made by them. Your first sentence is just either dumb or ignorant. You are a great writer, but sometimes you just shit yourself inside out with your cockyness.

@AexEro - You obviously don't come around here too often. Jim Sterling is the King of Sarcasm, and that first sentence is riddled with it.

Ubisoft will make anything for money, whether what gets released is crap or not, well, let's just say that i'll believe it when i see it. And yeah, Assassin's Creed AND Prince of Persia, at least recently.

Ubisoft has already made an RPG its called Enchanted Arms. It was pretty fun actually you can choose from over 100+ characters to make your 4 member party.

@PappaDukes

I come here often enouth to know when he is being sarcastic and not. Ubisoft is one of the most diverse companies out there, doing almost any type of game, either its fps, puzzle, racing, stealth, action, strategy, platforming, casual, adventure, fighting (if you think its new, the latest I can remmnber for example were the 2 Naruto games out for the xbox360, both received average to good reviews), and RPGs (for example, and as runtheplacered posted before me, Heroes of Might and Magic, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic). Even if the first sentence is just a joke, I really doubt the last two ones are.

Still, you are free to think whatever you want of course. I just hate seing a company that is trying to go the extra mile, and being remembered by "shovelware, shovelware and assassin's creed". Of course they do games for money, but that doesen't make it a bad company. I can surely recall a lot of companies that I'd rather hate.

Like I said before, not every game they make is a gold gem, but still a lot of them are pretty good, with some being considered the best of its generation.

...I still think Jim is a good writer tough, I just believe he sometimes tries too hard to be funny, and ends up being obnoxious.

Sorry for the wall of text. Peace, Aex out.

i was more or less responding to the first few people that posted, particularly
Shadowiii. As for using sarcasm in journalism.. obviously if it has to be explained as such after the fact you're probably better off avoiding it altogether. Dry sarcasm just doesn't really have much of a place in the written form. Not to say they can't coexist, but it takes some intuitiveness to use it. Some can manage that, some can't.

I'm hoping Ubisoft will be making 2D Fighting games. Even if they suck, I need more variety. I was hoping Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue and KOFXII would bring in a sea of imitators, and instead all I have to look forward to is... Super Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift, and BlazBlue Portable.

Pathetic.

Awesome. As great as Conviction might be, they can only make so many Clancy games before they begin losing sales. It's good to see them branch out, more publishers should follow their lead.

I'm not sure why they keep trying to do things by outsourcing random titles with the "Might and Magic" IP to random european developers. Now given, Dark Messiah was pretty awesome, but I still don't know why they think the IP has any particular recognition.

Also I wonder how bad Trackmania 2 will suck now that Ubisoft owns Nadeo.

Very dumb that they refused Borderlands. Well that depends what kind of games they are making...good fighting game and good RPG? Yes would be awesome

Ubisoft used to be known for really brilliant stuff. Last generation, they published a lot of my favorite games. Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and Beyond Good & Evil.
