Ubisoft kills manuals, launches eco-friendly packaging photo

The environment is saved! Kinda.

Ubisoft's Xbox 360, PS3 and PC packaging changes from here on out. In-game manuals will replace paper ones. This kicks off with Shaun White Skateboarding later this year.

Oh, quit bitching. You never read the manuals anyway. Ubi says that digital manuals are good for both the player and the environment! They say that one ton of manual paper comes two tons of wood from 13 trees and puts out the equivalent of over 6,000 lbs of CO2. For shame!

The DVD cases also get some eco tweaks. Ubisoft has partnered with Technimark Inc. to make the most "environmentally-responsible DVD case for all of its future PC titles." They're 100% recycled, you know. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction will be the first of these cases.

Look at you, Ubisoft!

The end of an era?

Man, those were the days. My favorite genre's manuals to read were the RPG's. Trying to soak up all the battle system info on my way from the store.

It's been so long since I've actually looked at a manual. Maybe since the PS2 days.

I miss the days when PC games came in giant cardboard boxes and had novels for manuals.

Green man arse, using less paper does not save trees this is just one more way for them to cut costs. Tree's are grown in tree farms for the specific purpose of making paper.

This is a sad day and if you believe the crap that it's about the environment then I feel sorry for you. This is about them saving money and giving you less for yours.

But in that article doesnt "Eco-Friendly" in this case equal "excuse to cut costs and squeeze out a bit more profit"?

That sucks. The fist thing I do when I buy a new game is sit down and read the whole manual. Heck, last night I beat Phoenix Wright: JFA and the first thing I did after closing the DS was read the manual for Phoenix Wrigth: TAT and it's my second or third time playing that game.

When the game manuals keep getting smaller over time I saw no point in reading em anymore..I just use the Internet for that.

This is crap. I just opened my Resistance 2 manual after not reading a manual for a while (they've become such crap) and was pleasantly surprised with how sharp it was (the WW2 promotional art was fantastic). I fondly remember buying games while on errands with my mom, then reading the manual in the car as we drove home, getting pumped for what was going to be a rad gaming experience.

Also, Ubisoft saying this is to "go green" is complete garbage. It's because they are cheap, and they should lower the prices of their games for this.

I love the environment as much as the next guy, but I've always appreciated a good manual. I do not like this development. Not that I usually play Ubisoft games, anyway.

Which is nice but having one child damages the planet more than this does. By far the biggest threat to the planet is over-population, not how much paper you use or how much CO2 your car emits. Just putting that out there.

For the most part, game manuals have been dead for the last two gaming generations. Of course, there's always been exceptions, but a lot of manuals lately have pretty much been "Here's the controller setup, main menu and one screenshot of the on-screen display. HAVE FUN!"

Also, HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO WRITE NOTES AND COMMENTS WITHOUT A PAPER MANUAL?!?

Pretty cool, it can be accessed easily and if I buy a used game I know the manual will be included in it.

What? True, tutorials and so on are getting better every day, but i DO read manuals. If at least the fuckers made a downloadable PDF of them.....
I mean, before purchasing big stuff (consoles, usually) i download the manual, and read it. That way i can get a better feel if it's what i want, and moreover i'm already an "expert" by the time i get home with the new toy XD
When i bought the PSP, the manual was over 100 pages, monolingual. When i bought the PSP Slim, the crap was tiny and with 2 billion of different languages! I mean, wth.
Videogames ones instead, make a good read before going to sleep when i buy games right before dinner and i'm too tired to play after.

Then again, what does Ubisoft publish? Only barely interesting thing i can think of, is Assassin's Creed.

Frankly, putting game manuals on-disc makes complete and perfect sense. *Every* game should have their manual accessible from the pause screen at any point. I can't imagine a scenario wherein anyone would ever need their manual when they're not playing the game, so I see zero issue with the transition. Not to mention, should this become standard, it would provide all renters with a copy of the manual, which is sure to please a lot of people.

That said, I also agree with the fact that a move like this allows companies like Ubisoft to save even more money without passing a cent of those savings back to the consumer in any way, shape or form.

All that eco bullshit is exactly that. Next thing you know games will start coming in those lame-ass flimsy cases with the recycle logo cut out of the front and large chunks cut out of the back (maybe that's what you mean in that last paragraph).

Oh cut this shit, Ubisoft. I'm paying you 60 dollars for a game, I want a manual regardless of whether or not I read it. This is just a completely BS way for Ubisoft to squeeze more profit out of us while hiding it underneath the guise of 'eco friendly.' Almost all of my disc based games have manuals, often times I won't buy a used game without one. It's just part of the package, and I want it included.

I'm still incredibly annoyed with the horrible 'green' DVD cases they're shoving down my throat. Aside from the fact that it makes the entire case fragile as hell, it feels like the disc is going to snap every time I try to remove it. Thankfully not every developer uses them, Deadly Premonition (a budget game) still had a real case, so if Ignition can afford it, Ubisoft definitely can.

This whole eco-movement isn't saving the planet at all. We had a great idea called recycling that worked out great (especially with the paper industry) until companies realized they wanted even more ways to increase their profit without us knowing. I understand it to an extent, but when you start cutting out (no pun intended) cases and manuals, you're cutting content that I've come to expect from a full priced game.

Between companies growing more eco-friendly, the fall of the US Postal Service, and the rise of internet communications, I would really hate to be in the paper industry right now.
