If you're a PlayStation 3 owner and actually wanted to play that copy of Assassin's Creed you sold blood to get, you're in luck. The issues of the game freezing up are being address by Ubisoft, so hang tight.

In a post on the official Ubisoft forums, Communit Manager Chris Easton reveals that a patch is on its way:

Following our recent statement regarding the freeze issues that some consumers are facing with Assassin’s Creed on PlayStation 3, we can confirm that we are actively working on a game update. This update will help improve the stability of the game and will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime thank you for your ongoing feedback and patience.

Finally, now PS3 owners will be able to complete redundant pickpocket and informant fetch missions without issue. Are you sure you wouldn't rather be playing Uncharted?

I'm split on this... it's nice that they're patching the issues with the game, but at the same time it's completely lame that they released the title with this problem in the first place.

Yeei, first to comment!!! I don´t have a PS3 but I want one for xmas, and considering Assassin´s Creed is one of my considered gifts this note comes most welcome.

Now, can anyone tell me if Sony has fixed the 2.0 firmware errors with 2.1?

Console gaming is starting to rely on a patch culture.

I do not approve.

@Jim:
Hell, I've been upset with it since the first time I heard about it... At some point, I don't even like the fact that also the consoles need patching to have better performance... Wasn't that suppose to be the primary thing when releasing the system?

It's like buying an empty box of chocolates and then getting incremental updates of each chocolate.

Gaming life is beginning to be like an box of rotten chocolates...

@ Jim: Hasn't gaming always had a patch culture since the big-budget titles started being the name of the game? (AKA you'll recoup enough in sales to justify having your people fix a bug?)

Oh, wait, console gaming. My bad.

It's probably The Revenge of the Internet.

Console gaming is starting to rely on a patch culture, indeed. But this was bound to happen since patching was made possible by them incorporating HDs, internet connections and live services. I would say, instead, that console gaming culture is growing closer to PC gaming culture! Which is mostly good for a sheer amount of reasons that I am too lazy to enumerate here. So if someone asks, just tell them I said so.

In the beginning, I would have responded by saying patches could also mean new content and modes, but since they seem to want to sell those to us instead, I must disapprove of this patch culture.

The merging of console and PC is rather nasty really. Console releases are getting the instability and beta-as-gold of PC releases. While at the same time, everything that comes out on PC is out on console, so the interfaces, options, and gameplay are all dumbed down to work on a console level.

Wedge, you might be quite right in your points, but I need to ask: don't you think that this may be the natural outcome of console gaming becoming more popular than PC gaming? A lot of third-party development means mixed quality of the releases, motivated by developers looking for profit. The more the offer, the more shitty products you can expect.

Also, I wouldn't forget that probably Ubi *had* to release this one on time. Not doing so would just add to PS3's current "semi-failure" status. In the end, I don't want to say Ubi is innocent, but I think Sony has his fair share of blame, too. Never forget that PS3's architecture is quite the novelty. I would dare say that it does not fit a gaming machine as it is traditionally understood. And you can't say that Sony has made it easy for developers to adapt to it by providing nice and shiny SDKs. They have realized that and are striving to correct it. I just hope that they are not too late, because gaming industry as a whole will only benefit from having a strong PS3 scene.

I have a ps3. It has only crashed once and I played through the entire game. I actually enjoyed it. Dunno.

Well at least they acknowledged the problem and are fixing it. It would have been nice to have the game that didn't require a fix but at this point I'll take what I can get. And hey a few years ago this wouldn't have been possible with consoles having no hard drives and no internet. I thought the last firmware update might fix the problem and for a while it seemed to, but then last night it did freeze on me again, at least it hasn't been when something important is going on.

@ Harkonnen:

I can accept PC games requiring patching simply because the vast number of different hardware combinations are extremely difficult to thoroughly test. But console hardware is the same across the board. There should be no reason a console game should ever need a patch unless the developers are giving fans a free content update, or maybe tweaking the balance of a multiplayer title. More companies should take a cue from Blizzard, Valve, or Nintendo and release their games "when they're done" rather than "when it's best economically for us".

It is bad that publishers are releasing games with serious issues, but they've been doing that since before patches became available on consoles. Considering how painless the patching process is(on the 360 at least), I don't really see why this is a major problem.

Agreed, Jim and the rest. I was worried when Sony started touting the PS3 as more of a computer than a console, way back when. This is one of the reasons. I mean, it's great that they can release patches and fix consoles and game glitches, but these things are not supposed to be there in the first place. It's becoming common for games to need patches, especially the big releases. I'm hoping to God that Mass Effect doesn't end up needing a patch, just based on principle alone.

Don't believe in the patch until it actually comes out, Ubisoft has promised patches "Offically" for games before and we're talking months to years.

Well, at least they’re acknowledging their mistake and are working to fix it. I suppose if we are going to have to deal with more and more patches for console games, the least these developers could do is be honest and admit it when they’re at fault.

While Console games should definately NOT need Patches. Companies patching their games to fix them is a very good thing.

Yeah, uncharted is a much better option. It's kinda sad that AC will probably outsell it based on hype.

With all the games out now and the option to import dual shock 3's (which makes unchared even better) there's really no reason to spend money on mediocre games like AC.

Welcome to the plight effecting most excellent movies and albums since long before video games existed. Sad, I know.

Jim Sterling, I feel you pain! Too often I feel like a fucking game tester more than a gamer. I was addicted to Supreme Commander and Dawn of War, but the patching issues were even worse there. I stand by this: Game systems/tech. should have never attempted to supplant perfection with bells and whistles. That perfection, of course, is the SNES.
