Ubisoft can make a PS3 Splinter Cell: Conviction, but won't photo

Don't you dare question the ability of the Splinter Cell: Conviction developers. According to lead designer Stephen Masters, the team "could easily" create the amazing looking sequel for PlayStation 3. That doesn't mean they're going to, however. If it's not a lack of technical know-how, why wouldn't Splinter Cell be coming to Sony's black box o' Blu-ray?

"Well that’s purely a business decision. That’s it," he explains. "Ubisoft as a company now has a lot of experience with PS3. Our processes, tools, techniques are very well-developed -- we could absolutely execute on the PS3 if we had the opportunity, but like I said it was a business decision."

A business decision? That's one, very tactful way, of putting it, but there's no need for Ubisoft to be so coy. Just tell us many many zeros Microsoft wrote on that check and we'll say no more about it.

Splinter Cell: Conviction was definitely one of the biggest shocks of E3. I have never been able to care about a Splinter Cell until I sat in the audience at the Ubisoft press conference and saw one of the most sleek, slick and above all, cool looking games to appear in a long time. This is going to be hot, whatever the console it's on.

Stephen Masters,

You're not a game designer for entertaining people. You're just after money. You're a simple person who won't accomplish anything significant while you chase the status quo. While people your age are influencing people's lives you're just a simpleton collecting a paycheck.

A business decision? Is that what art is all about? Business decisions? A fatter wallet?

Fuck you and your team of gluttonous hedonists who are in this business for a completely different reason than your poor customers believe you to be in it for. All the people that waste their money buying a product you did not shed any blood, sweat or tears for, I pity.

Sure, they could easily develop the game for PS3, but could they do it right?

Not likely.

At least not cheaply. It would be another in a long line of cross platform titles that was rushed or just simply inferior on the PS3.

360 is my console of choice so I am just happy to know it's coming out on that. I'm so stoked for this game, E3 coverage looked great.

So publishers like Capcom are bringing their once console exclusive series such as Devil May Cry and Dead Rising to all systems (including PC!), and now there are publishers who want to take steps back?

This industry doesn't make any fucking sense.

@Magnalon
thats what I'm saying, its like logic has no say in this industry whatsoever, if your gonna be a multiplat dev be a multiplat dev, not occasionally multiplat dev. if their tech is so advanced and their understanding of the ps3 so great then whats the hold up.

Id rather them say they got paid off because that would at least sound SANE. a business decision that affords you no tactical or platform specific advantage isn't a smart decision. that just leaves room for someone else to come in and steal your thunder, I would be fired for making decisions like that.

@grimspoon
there are multi-plat games that look better on ps3 and perform better too, bionic commando, SFIV are two examples, so go troll elsewhere.

Multiplat devs have pretty much closed the gap and graphical differences are so negligible that the only reason not to multi-plat is if MS tosses money at someone since sony officially stated they weren't going to buy exclusives like MS does.

In this economy, I'm not surprised. Microsoft probably did open up their check book, and Ubisoft decided they'd rather take guaranteed cash now than risk it supporting the console with the smallest install base.

@bruceleethree

Shut the hell up.

Not an economist, are you?

You're bitching because a company made a decision that will allow them to continue to pay their employees and continue to develop additional products because it compromises "art"? Through out history, "art" follows money. An artist who dies of starvation in a cardboard box tends not to create much.

Let me know how that whining, naive attitude works for you if you move out of your parents house and actually have to support yourself.

Maybe it's just an exclusive head start for Xbox360? Maybe the PS3 will get it months later? Kind of like Lost Planet, DLC for a few games, etc...

Or Maybe it's just an exclusive permanently... Oh well. You win some, you lose some. In the end, the Dev team for Splinter Cell are the winners with a fat paycheck and smiles on their faces.

@buri3,

I'm not trolling, sure there are always exceptions, but the PS3 seems to get the short end of the stick when it comes to cross platform development. Now these developers are outing themselves as being extra lazy, or simply usless by way of not even trying.

"Trying is the first step towards failure" is probably the best way to sum up my feelings towards these developers.

They will be developing it for the PC...

I dont understand this kind of stuff... Im a PC gamer and I would love to play Alan Wake but first on the 360. Same thing with resident evil 5... first on everything, later on PC.
WTF!?! How much money those guys at microsoft have to make everything first for that f****** piece of s*** that the 360 is. Because is a f***** piece of hardware, I dont own a PS3 but the hardware is way better. So you have to stick with s*** like microsoft because they pay to have all the games first there, in that red ring of fail machine.

Now im pissed.

While everyone would like to blame MS, I think it seems to be more in line with the idea that its expensive to develop for and possibly not worth it. While we love to claim MS pays for everything to not go to PS3, after a while you need to realize that even MS would stop losing money by the buckets and get out of the industry. How many 0's would it take to stop a major development house from developing a major selling title? over 8 million easy I would guess.

Who says it's a Microsoft moneyhat? It could be that they don't think they'd sell enough copies on PS3 (that they won't sell on 360 to owners of both consoles) to recoup the costs of porting it to PS3.

Yeah, it's *probably* because Microsoft'll run a bunch of free advertising for them if there's no PS3 version. But I don't think that the idea of a PS3 port costing more than it would make is implausible at this point.

I'm placing my bet on:

Bad return on investment.

PS3 development, licensing, etc. probably discourages porting it due to generally lower sales on PS3 for multiplatform titles (and Splinter Cell being an XBOX game first and foremost)

I don't believe they got any money for exclusivity
Breedlove's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/21/2009 23:29

Its not always about first party buying an exclusive. Many publishers simply run the numbers on a new or refreshed franchise based on historical sales, platform install base and genre saturation. Sometimes not every game on every platform can be profitable. Thems the breaks for consoles with smaller install bases like PS3.

Shit, I love exclusives! It reminds me of the olden days when each console had it's own Killer Apps and it's own identity.
I associate Splinter Cell with Xbox the same way I associate Metal Gear with PS.
Fuck it, I wouldn't have this any other way. I wish all AAA games were console exclusive for a time.

The most common way to cover up a lack of skill is to claim that you have the skill but don't want to use it.

I wouldn't buy this game until they admit the Mullet and Beard is a Big Boss rip-off anyway.

Love the M$ conspiracies, and who knows? Perhaps M$ have paid for an exclusivity. But then When UBIsoft themselves, only a few months back, said something along the lines of "We consider Splinter Cell and the Xbox to go hand in hand as it was originally developed for Xbox, so we just wanted to keep that special relationship around" you have to question the suspicion. Oh, nice one PS3 owners for having all the grace of a brick about not getting this. Where's my version of Killzone2, eh? Fuckers.

Doesn't matter to me, console Splinter Cell always played second fiddle to the vastly superior PC version. They have always had an engine that scales fantastically on PC. I'll be going with the Windows version unless they pull some Alan Wake crap and split on me.
