I'm hesitant to post another video on the main page, since it's already cluttered with the likes of the Pikmin-gone bad, Overlord, and the PSP RPG goodness of Jeanne D'Arc. But this new Assassin's Creed trailer, straight from Ubisoft's Ubidays event in Paris, must be seen by everyone ... right now. Call your mom into the room.
This game completely took me by surprise at E3 when I wormed my way into Ubisoft's behind-closed-doors showing to see a game that I had never heard of before. It was gorgeous and intriguing, but certainly in need a lot of work to get where it needed to be. It's been quiet on the Assassin's Creed front for the past few months, and now we know why -- polish, baby.
Now before it becomes the next "Mad World," let it be known right now that the song in the trailer is the UNKLE track "Lonely Soul," from their debut record Psyence Fiction. It was released in 1998, nearly 10 years before Assassin's Creed, which should hit shelves later this year ... right? Pretty please?
My god that song is amazing. Thank you for posting the band and name of the song!
I dont know the history of the storyline... but it seems he's templar correct? Hot damn the templar were so bad ass!! historic versions of modern day special forces! :)
I don't think the term shithot has ever been more appropriate.
I like the way the trailer highlighted, subtly, the usable terrain. Even if I didn't know dick about the game, I'd say "Hey, him climbing that wall's pretty cool. I wonder how they did that." The trick is that Ubisoft managed to do that without being all heavy-handed. Yes, yes, yes -- this is how you make a compelling trailer.
Ok, the trailers pretty cool, but Im going to call the music track out as sucking balls. Sounds WAY to much like Rob Dougan, and if anything, they should have used him.
The trailer alone is good, why wash it out with lame eurotrash type of music
this game looks so sweet. now how about some legit in-game footage, eh? or are we really gonna play with the same kick ass cinematic camera angles as in that trailer?
I need a release date. I'm already planning on spending several hundred dollars on video games this fall, and I need to know if I should add this to the list.
As a side note, I downloaded this trailer and tried to play it on WMP and it almost made my computer explode (i.e. frame somewhere around .3 fps). What gives? I have a decent laptop that normally does not wilt under the strain of PLAYING MOVIES.
I don't think I'm waiting for any other game as much as this now. fuck halo.
From wikipedia:
Assassin's Creed is a video game currently in development by Ubisoft Montreal, which has no announced release date. The game takes place during the Third Crusade, in the year 1191. The gamer plays as a member of the assassin sect Hashshashin known as Altaļr (الطائر, Arabic, "The flying" eagle), whose objective is to assassinate the nine historical figures who are propagating the Crusades, and the suffering of the people. As the gamer finds and kills these targets, their conspiracy is unveiled. The player will be able to travel through three cities, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus.
The environment is completely interactive, from the people to the historically accurate cities. These cities are populated by many people and the way the player controls Altaļr affects how people around him react to his presence. For example, when going through a crowd, if the player lightly moves someone out of the way, it will not have a significant effect. However, if the player throws someone to the ground and kills them, the crowd may unite against him and he will then have to find a way out. Similarly, if the player shoves a person aside, they may shove him back. If he climbs walls, civilians will gather around, attracting unwanted attention from guards.
Features
The player will be able to grab onto and climb almost any aspect of the environment, which means exploration will be possible to a greater degree than in any previous game. Ubi boasts that any object that stands out more than two inches will be interactive.
The control scheme in Assassin's Creed will be significantly different from that of the typical game. Rather than explicitly specifying what actions Altaļr will take, the player presses buttons corresponding to his various body parts and the game attempts to figure out what action should be taken. For example, running toward a wall and pressing the 'legs' button will cause Altaļr to jump over a wall, while pressing the 'arms without weapons' button will cause him to vault it.
A major selling point is "social stealth" - the ability to blend in with a crowd, as opposed to simply hiding in shadows.
It also apperes that you'll be able to battle many historical figures, including the legendary order of the templar knights.
They had me at historically accurate cities. This has been everything I've wanted in a game recently.
Remember the original Boshido Blade anyone? It was a simple one on one fight mechanic that mixed a lot of defense, with waiting for the opponent to open up enough to strike that one beautiful blow. While the game was not without its fair share of problems, it did us up to the possibilities of a fighting game, and instantly a niche market of realistic virtual sword fighting enthusiats was created (and subsequently forgotten).
The fighting dynamic in this game really has me remembering my favorite elements of Boshido Blade, but this has been grossly expanded to include everything I had wanted that game to be....
Stunning... I would put in my preorder that limited addition ASAP but I really want them to get into the details on any differences between the PS3 and 360 versions so I can choose exactly which one I want to put in a preorder for.
Dunno if any of you were aware, but this game is suppose to take place as a dream or a flashback of a time lost...
If you watch near the end, when the game title is coming up you can see the whole VR concept as it flickers showing the reality shudder... really interested as to how this is going to turn out story wise.
I think the game is good enough as is, they just need to add some gore. Like if you slash somebody right across the chest, a red strip appears there (that's supposed to be blood).
Thanks Nick, always good to see more info about Assassin's Creed, definitely may most looked forward to game of (hopefully) this year.
@ Hipple - Word up until now has been September release date, but i wouldn't be surprised if it got pushed. And yes, you should buy it.
@ ZMTToxics - Yes there should indeed be a PC version (as well as Xbox 360 and PS3) and as far as I know they should all be released at the same time.
@ FiXXXerX - I believe that, thanks to Kristin Bell, we're all aware its not a straight up historical game.
SPOILER
As far as we know, it has to do with scientists tapping in to the memories of a ancestor by analysing an individual's DNA. I suppose the vague premise is that there is some form of memory storage coded in to a part of the genome, and that 'de-crypting it' allows one to decipher the memories of someone from a previous stage in that individual's genetic heritage.
So the scientists are trying to find out what happened in this part of the third crusade by analyzing the DNA of one an ancestor of Altair, the Assassin.
When you die in the game, I guess its explained as a an error in the decryption and you back track and try and re-interpret. Its very reminiscent of the death/non-death mechanic in Sands of Time, which makes sense seeing as how they share the same lead designer-/project manager.
END SPOILER
This game looks great, but the sooner we see a playable demo, either at a press event or over XBLA/PSN, the better. Its still just a nebulous concept until we see the actual gameplay.
UNKLE is pretty cool but I find myself only listening to Lonely Soul and Rabbit in your Headlights since I'm a Radiohead fan. The new Assassin's Creed footage looks kick ass too.
The only thing that could have made it any fucking cooler was if at the end the character triggers his wrist blades and impales someone as he lands. I wish all game trailers were this good.
The only thing that could have made it any fucking cooler was if at the end the character triggers his wrist blades and impales the viewer. The camera. That kinda thing.
Robert Summa, you are wrong sir. He is most definately 'for the lose'. His lyrics are contrived and cliched, his voice sounds like me having a wank and he's possibly the ugliest male to ever walk the earth.
No one else thinks that it looks a little boring and cliche'?
I mean, the trailer is well directed, but from a gameplay and scenerio perspective, isn't this game looking like just another DMC/Price of Persia/Ninja Gaiden, except in the 1100's?
Assassin's Creed alone was going to make me upgrade to the new generation of consoles, and I hadn't even seen this video yet. Now that I have, and I have a 360, I haven't been more excited for a title in a very long time.
My PC here at work is about to shit the bed, so I have no audio, but the trailer with no sound is still great. this moving different body parts with different buttons sounds intriging.

I have such a boner for this game.

Theofficial site has a pretty sw33t trailer too.

Glad to see Ubi putting forth non-Clancy hotness totally unrelated to bunnies foaming at the mouth.
At Ubisoft, game kills you!

Other than that, good call.
And this game looks like it'll be the shit. Really looking forward to it.

I find that totally underwhelming.
I only need one kidney, right?
Looks awesome anyway. Could use a little more gore though, hitting people with swords until they fall over isn't very visceral.
Oh wait, I already have a 360. ;)
I couldn't agree more, I mean, it's impressive visually, but I don't think it will be up to par on gameplay. I could be wrong I have before.
