Ubi trademarks Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands photo

Unsurprisingly, it looks like Ubisoft is hard at work on another Prince of Persia title.

Superannuation has uncovered a LinkedIn profile of a Ubisoft character modeler who makes a direct reference to "working on a new Prince of Persia." The site also noticed that Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner recently filed for a trademark of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. Whether the two are related (or if they have anything to do with the upcoming movie) is unknown.

I was a big fan of last year's Prince of Persia, so a follow up would be welcome. What changes would you like to see Ubisoft make?

Maybe it'll have Nolan North playing a sarcastic, cheekily chauvinistic protagonist, and have scripted platforming that eliminates any sense of freedom.

I can't wait...

How about not charging us for a complete story?

I actually liked PoP, so when that happened I was more than a little pissed.

Hey, I haven't popped in PoP in a while. I might just throw the disc in the ol' 360 and see if I can't collect the rest of those orbs. Maybe take advantage of the discounted DLC?

My thought exactly.

I bought POP on PC and immediately after they announced they were not going to release the Epilogue on PC. So I was pretty soured on the game from the start and haven't played more than the very beginning of the game. More like a run through to make sure it ran on my system.

The Sands of Time games were so dear to me, they were pretty much my most loved series last generation. This generation? Couldn't give less of a crap about what they're doing now. Strange.

The hand holding in PoP killed it for me. I played it right after TR:U, and Tomb Raider just wiped the floor with it. That said, I absolutely loved the art style. Unfortunately, the nice parts made the game's failures that much more bitter. I felt like I was playing an early level of old-school Sonic - just hold forward and occasionally press jump. The game played itself. I hope they at least get rid of Elika always telling you where to go next. Finding stuff like that out on your own gave the old games a sense of exploration, discovery, and accomplishment that the reboot series utterly lacks.

I didn't really like the last Prince of Persia. Something about not being able to die really irked me. Also, the complete lack of the sands of time (an iconic mechanic for the series) also disturbed me.

Although it was a very very very visually impressive game, I didn't really enjoy it all that much so i'm not hyped about a sequel.

UNLESS. The forgotten sands are the SANDS OF TIME! That'd bring me back on board in a second.

How about not making a game that plays itself? Controls more like Assassin's Creed, where I felt like I had complete control, are more welcome than the super-automatic-only-draws-sword-in-repetitive-fights POP.

I don't approve of giant image. Thanks for that.

As long as it doesn't play as forgivingly as the last entry, I'm totally down. The game had a lot of polish and was worth playing in ever sense of the term, but it was criminally lacking in the difficulty department.

I'm with you there Nick, i loved PoP and i can't wait for another game, especially after the clifhanger at the end of the game.

PoP was quite the disappointing game, especially when it comes after three borderline fantastic games. I hope they restart again, because I don't have any love for the new characters and wouldn't want to carry that over to the new game.

Somehting new. I loved the original (never had time to play the second PoP), loved the Sands of Time trilogy and hated pop2008 (more like POOP, haha, i'm funny)
If Mechner is on board, i'm pretty sure it should be something interesting

People who complain about the "not dying" thing really need a good thwack. It works almost exactly the same as a checkpoint. Do you really bitch and moan this much about checkpoints in games?

I almost bought the new one. Do I have to get the DLC to finish the game? I'm confused.

Also Prince of Persia on PSP, is that any good?

I'd give the game a solid 6, mostly just because of how amazing the art design is. I beat it, but had to grudge through it.

I could write a solid 2,000 word essay on how Prince of Persia was a step back for the action genre (scripted platforming, and a FORCED collection system were just the tip of the iceberg), and that's my opinion.

Most people that I've seen give PoP a 10/10 fap over Elika, say "the graphics make up for everything" or how say how "amazingly realistic" Elika/Prince interacted with one another. Well, the dialogue was actually B-Chick flick movie quality, and fighting the same easy boss 5 times is not fun.

Oh, and falling 10 feet, but dying because there wasn't a beaten dirt section on the wall or claw marks to say "no actually, this is where you're supposed to go" sucked as well.

I dunno, make it less boring? The game was awesome for a few hours, but it quickly got old. Like Magnalon, I had a hard time beating it. Not because of difficulty, just because I felt like doing something else the entire time.

No more collecting seeds, smaller and more focused levels, and perhaps a bit more combat would be nice.

I just thought of another reason why it didn't "click" for me.

Elika became nothing more than a powerup. The "can't die" mechanic didn't really bother me, because all Elika did was shave 10 seconds off a "game over/retry" screen. Additionally, Elika became a super jump powerup (I could have just gotten "The Boots of Time in game, hypothetically), and an extra combat combo.

They way they tried to pass Elika off as some game breaking companion was really unbelievable, as hundreds of other games have actual worthwhile companions that are their own entities, and don't feel like a simple symbiotic extension of the main character.

That game would have made a much better CG movie: keep the art style, keep the graphics, keep the amazing music. Except in the movie, you'll only see each boss once, and they won't get old. You know it would be good.

@ Amnesiac, lol me too. I love how most of them never played a platformer or must have forgotten how platformers work. Plus they already mentioned that they are working on an AC and PoP triology together so this is not a surprise.

Put the Sands of Time back in (Forgotten Sands, wink wink, clever), don't make me stop to talk to Elika, just have her talk on the fly, revamp the combat system so I'm not stuck in that battle with no chance of getting away from some grunt enemy until I just kill him, don't reuse the bosses over and over, don't make the platforming QUITE so automatic, get rid of most of the dumb weird magical floating platforming sections.

Also, I'd appreciate it if the story didn't... blow.

But mostly, just make sure it doesn't follow up like Warrior Within did last generation with some aggro bullshit. The ONLY positive thing to come out of Warrior Within was the Dahaka chases.

Oh, and keep the death system. It's good. People don't understand that watching Elika's hand grab yours is literally EXACTLY the same as watching a screen that says "YOU ARE DEAD," except that it's a hell of a lot quicker.

Shit, and lastly, for trophies like "Don't die a hundred times," give me some sort of counter so I don't have to worry about literally keeping track of that myself.

"People don't understand that watching Elika's hand grab yours is literally EXACTLY the same as watching a screen that says "YOU ARE DEAD," except that it's a hell of a lot quicker."

Leaving out the important note that it does bring you back exactly where you died rather than tradional checkpoints: this.

I didn't mind it that much at all, but my problem was with the fact that during boss fights, you couldn't die either. Just like the intro to Symphony of the Night, Elika should have given you "one last health boost", and nothing more.

Finally, it thought i was the only one who saw that.

One a related note: MORE PERSIAN ELEMENTS.

and also, Elika could give health bonuses? I didn't notice probably because the

game was so damn easy

@Magnalon: It doesn't always put you back at the exact ledge. It most often put you back a few paces behind where you were. Say there was a long series of jump and columns and wall runs and climbs you had to do. If you fucked up, it puts you back on the original ledge before you started any of that platforming. The general rule was typically that she'd just put you back at the last safe spot you were at, i. e. at the last bit of flat ground.

To me, that seems incredibly fair. I don't get why gamers are always clamoring to be punished more. I just want to keep playing, so this system worked REALLY well for me. I get it, I fucked up. Let's get back into the game.

Besides, Prince of Persia has always been about taking a leap where you aren't really sure exactly where you might end up landing. A game like that simply CANNOT be unforgiving without being annoying as shit. The last generation literally just let you REWIND TIME to correct mistakes and put you back on the last safe ledge. This one just skips that and gets Elika to drop you there. Quickly. I like the system from Sands of Time better, but they did the best they could without the sands of time and I appreciate the solution they came up with. However, it seems like the sands might just be coming back anyway, so whatever.

I want Ubisoft to go back to the Sands of Time! The first game (Prince of Persia The Sands of Time) on PS2 was the best game I ever played. So the name is promising. I just want to have back the Dagger of Time, sand monsters, the old acrobatic system (just upgraded), Farah, and everything that made The Sands of Time what it became. It really was a magical game.
