Ubi: Splinter Cell: Conviction and R.U.S.E. delayed photo

If you think Ubisoft's recent financial report -- you know, the one that announced online multiplayer functionality in the next Assassin's Creed -- was all good news, think again: Splinter Cell: Conviction and R.U.S.E. have been pushed from fiscal year 2009, which ends March 31st, into 2010-11.

According to the report, both games were originally slated for a fourth quarter release (which would be relatively soon) but have been delayed. No reason was given for the delay (perhaps because all of the games shuffled out of Holiday 2009 have created another crowded season?), but don't fret too much: Splinter Cell: Conviction's new release date is April 2010, which isn't much of a delay at all. Except that, y'know, this is the third time it's been delayed in as many years.

R.U.S.E., however, is a different story. The Eugen Studios-developed real-time strategy game was originally supposed to be released in early February, but seems to have fallen off the face of the earth: no release timetable was mentioned at all in the report. The best I can say is that it will be released sometime before April 2011, cold comfort for anyone waiting on the game. Wait ... Is anyone actually waiting for R.U.S.E.?

And finally, there is absolutely no mention of Jade Raymond's new project, I Am Alive, which might be because it has the least-descriptive name for a major game in recent memory, with R.U.S.E. coming in a close second. The game was geared up for a spring release (like Conviction and R.U.S.E.) but I don't buy it: no one's seen hide nor hair of the game since it was announced at E3 two years ago. There was a vague idea that it might be released during the next fiscal year, but I'm already gearing up to write this one off as vaporware.

We've waited this long for Conviction. I think I can wait another three months. Besides, I've got Mass Effect 2 to play in that time!

CONVICTION DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THAT! THAT WAS THE SPLINTER CELL I WANTED! BUM FIGHTS! But NO, they had to go back to the same ol' routine. WEAK!

FFS how many times can you delay Splinter Cell? This is the ONLY game I want to play on the Xbox and Im really hoping it comes out for the PC, if not, Ill have to buy a 360.

I've had a trailer for Splinter Cell Conviction on my xbox forever that said "coming 2007". I remember how excited Ubisoft was about their "chair throwing" physics and their "homeless camouflage".

I don't know what the huge hype is on this SC, Chaos Theory was the last good SC.
Double agent just dumbed it down way to much.

splinter cell used to be the "true-er to life" stealth title to compete with MGS's bombastic action stealth, seems like SC is moving away from it's roots.

They probably didn't bother to announce anything on I Am Alive because it's a long way off. Even estimated, it's not due till 2011, last Ubi said.

RUSE is going to take advantage of the multi-touch technology implemented in windows 7, so maybe 2011 could be a better date to release it? I don't expect a lot of people to own the necessary equipment to play it properly in nearby days.

Plus, perhaps that means another beta with a more polished gameplay :) , seriously, the British faction sucked ass and needs to be improved IMO, same way with the Soviet Union.

@Canthari -- that's a really good point, actually. I totally forgot about RUSE and the multi-touch business. I wonder how the 360 and PS3 ports are going to work.

I'm really liking what RUSE could be. I guess it'll be a bit longer until I'll know how it turns out.

Either way, I'm not really excited for either of these, so I have no problem with this delay.

R.U.S.E. needs to be delayed. It's just nothing more than a niche game until it really steps up with a killer storyline, more accessibility, more units, more special abilities and such to make it a must-buy.

Even though I'm really excited for Splinter Cell: Conviction, I don't mind this delay at all. There's just too many games coming out in the first quarter of this year. And judging from a gameplay video I saw, it could need a little more polish in the frame-rate region.

Holy fuck. Conviction is fucking never seeing the light of day is it?

After all the holiday '09 delays I thought for sure this was gonna be the year where we got a nice even spread but all these delays...damn.

Now that I think, when the PS3 Motion Controller and the Project Natal are going to be released?

P.S. I just realized that Beyond Good & Evil 2 isn't on Ubisoft's 2010-11 release schedule either.

Total bummer.

DAMN IT! I have a question about SC:C anyways, has there been any word on a vs. mode? They have mainly just been focusing on the co-op. I really do hope there is a vs mode in it... :(

If they actually improve Conviction during that time I'm fine with this. And by "improve", I mean add some stealth back in (let me move bodies at the very least) and give us a return of the Spies vs Mercs multiplayer mode.

Oh everything is delayed. Why not just give a release date when you got the game ready to ship? First it was to not compete against Modern Warfare 2 and now it's to not compete with Mass Effect 2 or Bioshock 2.

Hmmm...Maybe if video games were cheaper...
