And, lo, the first episode of Penny Arcade's game, "On the Rain-slick Precipice of Darkness," is upon us, and I saw that it was good.

Penny Arcade Adventures looks like a cartoony film-noir/Sam and Max mashup, complete with episodic content and phallic fruit-juicer. I just hope that there is a zoot suit and the phrase "swing heil" involved. I don't know, maybe the darker elements of Tommy guns will provide a nice counter-point to the comic. Or maybe I'm reading a little to much into it.

Either way, the above trailer starts out in familiar 2d and then adds an extra d for gameplay footage. I know some of you will be furrowing your eyebrows in disapproval (as I did), but you'll just have to get over it. I am really digging the Lemony Snickett-esque font at the end, though.

Oh yeah, the game is being developed by Hothead Games, of which I know absolutely nothing.

I loved the 2D part and I was super excited about the game but the 3D part just looks terrible. I don't know if some things just don't transfer well to 3D or if those are just bad looking models, but I'm giving this game a meh until I see something better.

Penny Arcades is really hit or miss in extremes when it comes to humor...

But...is it just me, or does this just SCREAM cash-in? Doesn't even seem like a genuine effort to please fans.

I pray to god, for their sake, that the 3d stuff is alpha at the latest. Fruit fucker looked good though...

Yah, 2D in the beginning rocked, but the 3D looks like total ass.

Still have high hopes for the game, lets just hope the graphics make an improvement before release.

Chris Taran:

Same here, who the heck thought it was a good idea to go 3D with the most recognizable 2D drawing style in the web?

Plus the 3D just sucks, not just because is a translation you can do a good 2d-3d translation (check World of warcraft for firther reference) but this one is terrible.

Sorry but NO, just NO.

Like many have said above, it was perfect until they went 3D.

Digg this http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Penny_Arcade_Adventures_Tycho_and_Gabe_make_digital_debut

I met the Penny Arcade guys at MegaCon in Orlando last month, cool people, their online comics are nearly always funny, their actually comic book is good stuff, and just glad to see them keep expanding.

I want the game to be in 2D. The 3D just does not capture the art style all that well... :(

As soon as I saw that detailed cartoony 2D scrolling thing, I thought to myself, "awesome, an oldschool 2D point and click". Why did they have that intro if they weren't doing a point and click? Actually, screw that question. Why aren't they doing a goddamn point and click?

That looks like the most mediocre game I've seen in a while, and those graphics would have been poor a couple of years ago. Gabe & tycho are gamers, they should know better than this.

y'know, the least they could have tried with the 3D is doing something with a toon shader... Kinda like Okami and a few student films i've seen, a smart use of toon shader can give you something 3D, but with the familiar feel of 2D... i think It would have been better then what they are doing here atleast.

And here i was thinking i would have to upgrade my pc for this game...

Ok kidding, but seriously fruit fucker looked cool, the intro was great, the models...totally agree with what you guy are saying, maybe it would be better if it was cel shaded?

Same thoughts for me, I was really excited at first, a 2d adventure game in the same style as PA? That would be awesome.

Then the akward 3d came.

I'm still going to buy it, but...

God, it's so weird seeing those characters in 3D. I wonder what they'll do about the voice acting?

The intro vid is awesome. Even the 3D Fruit Fucker at the end was awesome and definitely well animated. The town buildings were well modeled.

However, the two character models were simply atrocious.

I don't mind if they go 3D. There are advantages. However, that is not a very good effort of it. Like I said, their animations don't look that bad(and the Fruit Fucker was spot on) and the building were fine. But the character models looks like muppet rejects with big, painted on, pixelated eyeballs and jaw lines that don't match the drawn ones at all. To top it off, the lighting was dreadful.
