Two WOW players use treadmills to run around Azeroth, almost suffer heart attack

     WHAAAAAAT?

This video has moved! Try our Destructoid HD Youtube channel

Apparently mice and keyboard controls just aren’t immersive enough for some people, as evidenced by the two guys in the above video. They show off the treadmills they’ve rigged up to control character movement in World of Warcraft, and for some reason they also decided it would be a good idea to cosplay as female Night Elves while doing so. Don’t ask me why.

Elijah and Aaron start off in Shadowglen and race to nearby Darnassus. Elijah narrowly won with a time of four minutes and fifty seconds. The two of them look pretty damn tired afterwards; maybe they should have used a more rigorous training regimen.

Once he’s able to breathe normally again, Aaron goes over how the treadmill controllers work: a mouse tracks a pad on a bicycle wheel that is spun by the treadmill. A scripting program then converts this movement into ‘W’ pulses, resulting in forward movement. He also mentions that while a WoW character has a running speed of 12 mph, they only needed to maintain a speed of 6 mph to get their Night Elves running. I guess a 1:1 pace was just too much for them to maintain.

Do you think a movement scheme like this could be a good way for some gamers to shed extra pounds?

Usedtabe: I agree man, it's pissing me off too. I'm pretty sure it's a bug with the player and not something they want it to do as it doesn't always auto play, but either way it needs to be fixed. When more than one video gets put on one page? GOD.

Anyway, the video was win!

@ Antlerbot: It's used-ta-be, and I don't even know what the hell "NoScript" is. Of course, I'm one of the few who use IE7, so it it's somewhere on IE I've never seen it.

People play WoW for like 16 hours at a time. 12 mph is at least a decent jogging pace. Unless someone is multitasking marathon training and WoW raids then cutting the speed by half is reasonable.

@Antlerbot- Thanks for the tip, but I use IE7 and I have no idea what "Noscript" is.

I have no option to allow adotube.com and I've always allowed Dtoid, yet the shit still autoplays all the god damn time.

Back on topic though: It's probably a good thing for WoW players, god knows how much respect I have for them...and god for that matter. But if I liked exercise I would EXERCISE rather than playing games. Props to the fatties though.

ah, usedtabe. oops.

Anyway, the point is, they already have it set not to autoplay.

Also, why are you using IE? I can't imagine going back to that security hole-filled bugfest.

That's a 2 hour marathon pace dude...Hardly a "jog".

good call on the sonic r. i can think of a few other games where something like that would be really cool. a game like mirror's edge for example would be perfect. sonic and the secret rings could have defiantly benefited from something along these lines as well

They're definitely working harder than the 6mph suggests since they're powering the treadmills as opposed to hitting a button and moving their feet fast enough to not fall off. They have a good amount of incline too plus dressing like idiots doesn't help at all.

Besides, 12mph is a 5 flat mile which most people, WoW addicts or not, can't do

training montage my ass. no montage is complete unless you have music from rocky, or the montage song. i don't care how stale that shit gets, it should be staple by now damn it.

Considering the treadmill is powered by a motor and this would work even if they weren't on it, it seems pretty pointless.

If what they're trying to do is create a more immersive experience, & control the pace at which they run w/ their legs they should have used an elliptical trainer.

This reminds me of an article I read awhile back about some guy using a laptop that was powered by a generator on an exercise bike to play WoW, he lost a bunch of weight doing it. I should look into this.

And just thing: This was just a tiny corner of a tiny part of the ingame world. Like 1/50 the distance from one end of the map to the other. They were just running basically from one end of the Night Elf training area to the other.
