And I don't see how this "exemplifies the problem with 3DS gaming". The only problem is that there aren't enough great games and this seems to be one of them. Sure, you pay for it against paying nothing for the Android version, but it's still in 3D (Tetris or not, it's a nice bonus) and with over 20 other modes.
Not to mention the competent Tetris Knockoffs on mobile consoles, the handheld/console versions of the classic almost always boast a fuckton of content. Tetris Worlds, anyone?
For the record, it's only free for the day :L
This could be a problem though for those with an Android based smartphone and a Nintendo 3DS. You could go the free route or pay $35 for a Tetris game with 20 modes and it being in 3D. I'm not particularly interested in Tetris (but I do love Tetris attack A LOT!), so this really wouldn't matter to me anyway.
I'm wide awake, last I checked. Well, actually, I am a little sleepy.
Like some dude already said, Android Tetris is free for only one day (I didn't know that, but I'll take his word for it) and 20 other modes + 3D + finally something else to play on my 3DS is worth it. Go hate somewhere else.
And this has always been the case. Tetris DS was packed to the gills but you could get your inferior(but functional) blackberry edition for 5$ And this isn't so much a 3DS issue as a general one.
Sure, price matters but for what you're paying on the 3DS version of Tetris, you're getting a lot out of it with new modes and other features whereas on the Android version, you're getting the same game we've played dozens of times.
The mere fact that you had to say "Well, hey, it's something for my 3DS." is f*cking sad. If you bought that thing for 250.00 and are more than willing to buy a 35.00 game for it that is FREE elsewhere, you are an idiot. If you have cash to piss on, you might as well just give it to me, I will put it to a worthy cause: PS Vita.
Still, i'd rather have more bang for my buck.
Also, Tetris 3DS. The DS version with updated visuals would give me boners.

Plus, Tetris w/ touch screen controls = FAIL
Tetris, at this point in its life-cycle, should not cost $35. Keep ignoring what the competition is doing at your own peril, Nintendo. You've already seen that you can't over-price a system without repercussions; don't think the same can't eventually happen with games, as well.
It's not that the iPhone version is bad, it's just that it isn't very good.
I might agree with you... if I even had a freaking Android.
God, I just joined and this place already has a straight dumb article and trolls everywhere.
@superdeeduper51: Just got one, $38'ish / month after taxes / fees, unlimited data. It's cheaper than the dumb phone it's replacing.
So should a Tetris game be $40, or even $35? No way, EA and Nintendo should be charging $19.99 for games like that, but that can happen because games on the 3DS and DS have been set at cheaper prices before, so its up to the Publishers to see that casual games like this should be cheaper. Did Nintendo charge $35 for Brain Age on the DS? No, they charge $19.99 for it and it sold almost 20 million units, so obviously lower prices games can sell. Nintendo's Tetris on the DS sold over 2.3 million units though, so that's probably why they think people will buy their new one at that price on the 3DS.
But maybe those 20 modes are amazing? If this article had said; "there is a free Layton app with a puzzle everyday, why would you buy the full game?" I would have been pretty snarky in reply too.
Exactly. It's even a bigger problem for nintendo in the age of digital download. Hopefully the vita sets a precedent for the next consoles as well, but 360 and ps3 games are already varying in pricing models.
(maybe just fuck tetris. overrated as fuck anyways.)
I don't know about you, but I'd pay a few dollars for the luxury of being able to actually control what the hell I'm doing.
I got both.
I, like many people, won't buy a handheld because they skill never carry more than their wallet, keys, and phone.
Smartphone gaming is much inferior to dedicated handheld in general... for now. I own a Xperia Play, so I have a dedicated game pad that's almost as good as a handheld's. I don't even lament not having anything else; I'm having more fun than I ever imagined playing PS1, N64, SNES, GBA, GBC, MAME, etc, etc, games perfectly.
Don't let two avatar-less asshats ruin your fun here. A lot of people rag on the 3DS here (I'm one of them, sometimes), but until this thread, I haven't seen anyone attack someone just for buying the system.
Hell, I almost bought the thing when there was a GameStop promotion to trade in old DSs and I wouldn't have even bought any games with the damn thing!
So, in conclusion, play what you wanna play, and welcome to D-Toid!
Tetris just exemplifies this little snafu more than most.
THUS.
If Tetris Axis can use that content from the online version, add in new stuff, AND offer an interesting use of Augmented Reality, then this package may very well be worth it.
Like its been said, this is less a problem with the 3DS and more with trying to monetize Tetris. I also love how every game journalist ever seems to forget that the DSi and the 3DS also have downloadable cheap ass games with equally shallow depth as appstore games.
Not too hard to get a good, cheap game of Tetris on the 3DS.
