Two new DualShock 3 colors coming to brighten your game room photo

My favorite thing about growing up with a Nintendo 64 were all the different controller colors there were to choose from. Each member of my family got their favorite color and used it exclusively during our nightly rounds of Mario Kart 64. There was red for me, black for mom, green for the older sister, blue for the little sister, and my stepfather was content with the original gray. We even picked up a spare translucent green along the way for guests to use. It may seem a little silly, but each of us grew really attached to our color, deeming them good luck to their rightful owner and a curse upon anyone else who picked them up. It was a nice little extra to our family gaming time.

Sadly, there hasn't been that much color variation in console controllers this generation outside of the Xbox 360. But it seems that Sony is aiming to change this. A while back, they announced "Deep Red" and "Metallic Blue" DualShock 3 controllers, and now that the release date of October is drawing near, we finally have a picture showing what these colors look like. One is a nice royal blue, and the other a standard but pretty red. It's only two new colors to add to the black, white and silver colors that are currently available, but it's a start.

Now that you know what they look like, which one do you want to go for? I'm really liking the red myself, since, well, I have quite a history winning games with a red controller between my hands. And once I have it, no one else can touch it. No one!

Those look sexy. But when Dualshock 3s cost $54.99, um, hell no? I'll cough up the extra 5 bucks and buy a game, thank you.

I miss using my ol' translucent blue DualShock 2... I might be tempted to buy a new controller if the price wasn't so damn high.

Fuck the price. I've already got the black, silver and white. Might as well get the red and blue also.

Didn't the original Playstation and Playstation 2 controllers have red and blue controllers as well?

Yeah, I'm with everyone. There's absolutely no reason controllers should cost $55.

One thing I really miss about the different colored N64 controllers was that the plugs were colored too, so you could look at the color and know which port it was plugged into.

I mean, all of the current gen controllers do that too via LEDs, but it was only the GameCube in the last generation that did it, and those colors were all pretty bad.

@Ververdan0226: it doesn't make it any less overpriced.

I'm thinking the PS3 controllers have actually less profit margin in the price than do PS2. At least here a wired PS2 controller costs about $40 (Europe) which is a ripoff. PS3 controllers are wireless and communicate using bluetooth so that must add something to the price and I've noticed that third-party controllers using the same tech cost quite a bit as well. PS2 ones on the other hand are definitely so low-tech that they should really be a lot cheaper.

Well, I do need more PS3 controllers and have been hoping for more colors, so picking up red, blue, and silver controllers would be very nice (and allow me to phase out that nasty Sixaxis controller). Still hoping for those white controllers though...oh well, PS3 supports up to 7 controllers (used in Bomberman Ultra), so I'll get that many eventually.

The colors really need to be more dark to fit with those buttons. The blue one is pretty nice, but that red one contrasts with the black a bit too much for my tastes.

I still have to get a second controller, and I was planning on getting the white DS3. but now I'm stuck choosing between that and the blue one.

A small used game store where I go to college had some imported controllers for only $5 more than regular ones (and theirs were $5 cheaper anyway) so I got a silver one along with Little Big Planet before I even bought a PS3. Silver does look mighty fine.

Hopefully these come to Australia. I want both - red to match my 360 controller and blue because it is also pretty.

I think a family gaming night sounds awesome. I never did anything with my family apart from the VERY occasional Goldeneye match with my dad.

I had to give him 1000 times more health than me to make it fair lol
