Twitter Friday: Bustin' makes me feel...aw, nevermind photo

Update: Congratulations to Bug42 and NVmisfit, you're our Twitter quickest reply winners! So that's it for this week. Next Friday we're going to try something different -- we're going to give something away FIRST on Twitter without warning and then post the winners. What will it be?  It's a secret to most!

Not into the whole Twitter thing?  We hear ya.  Check out our other non-tweeting contests like the opportunity to compete for $80,000 worth of computer equipment on Friday.Night.Fights.  Thanks and good luck!

--

Yeah, the whole "Bustin makes me feel good" thing has kind of been worn to the bone since Ghostbusters: The Video game came out, but luckily, me giving away free stuff is not old news yet. I have a feeling it might stay trendy, in fact!

This week I have a whole bunch of random Ghostbusters swag to give away, including two t-shirts, sanitizing slime, inflatable slimers, squeezable Stay Pufts and more. To win a random swag pack, simply follow us on the Dtoid Twitter and wait for us to say it's time to win a prize. When we do, reply with a direct message and say "I like spores, molds and fungus" to win one of these two goodie bags for yourself. From there, we take your address and mail you free stuff. Deal?

Can't you only send a direct message to people who follow you?

Yeahhh... I'm having that issue... so I'm just going to do the usual "@dtoid I like spores, molds and fungus" thing.

Yeah, Dtoid wants to be part of the whole twitter marketing bandwagon.

Does everyone else get twitter updates automatically or something? Because I sure has hell don't. I don't even know this works, every time you get a twitter it sends a text to your phone or something? That's got to be annoying.

Then again, maybe I'm an idiot and there's a way for my phone to beep whenever dtoid sends a particular message re: prizes.

That looks sweet, but I'm about to start up Indigo Prophecy. I think constantly following Twitter whilst playing the game might break the immersion... <_>

Yeah, I agree with the person above me. This is a game site. We play games. We don't sit on twitter 24/7. Twitter really is a terrible idea all around. Please stop doing twitter only contests. You give away pretty much all the good stuff people would want via twitter. Realize there are adults that use this site as much as the tweens desperate for attention that need to post everything about their lives online that twitter is marketed to. Most people don't want to have to sign up for a second site to get the benefits of one site. Does twitter even pay you for the advertising you give them?

I'm a little surprised about these comments. Did you know Destructoid actually run FOUR KINDS of contests?

Check it: http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/index-channel.phtml?t=CONTESTS

For sick prizes ($80,000 in computer equipment!) we'll do a tournament that runs for six months on Friday Night Fights. No entry fee and random participation on that one, by the way. http://fnf.destructoid.com

For big prizes (we just gave away a $10,000 steampunk pc last week) for doing something really elaborate/creative or interactive.

For medium-sized prizes (win 3 copies of Diablo 3, see my post yesterday) we often do random place a comment contests.

For little random giveaways (swag or download codes) we'll do cblog contests or a quick thing on Twitter.

So choose your poison! @fromagex - Nobody gets paid to post on Twitter (they don't need our help!) but the PR companies that supply us these free things and they like that we're on Twitter because it's the new thing.

I never thought I'd have to justify how and why we get and give away free stuff on the site. What a good problem to have, I guess?

the point of all of this is simple:

FREE AND AWESOME SWAG

Take it or leave it.

and we can begin a whole battle of epic proportions of why "social webs" are killing and mindraping the people, but this is Dtoid, and i want to read and have fun. ^^

Maybe I'm blind... but I can't seem to see the usual "rules" stuff on the FNF page... can Canadians win as well? (we're often excluded). It's rather cool that the games seem to be be browser based, so most anyone can play.

I also now have twitter... but am still getting used to the thing! I really only intend to use it for these contests, but it seems a technology to at least be aware of as it seems to be gaining momentum.

Hmmm... and I'll have to have a look at some of the other contests!

I didn't mean to piss you off. Run your business the way you want. I haven't had a single problem in the 3 years I've been following it. I was just letting you know; as a user from the beginning; that I see far too many twitter contests. Twitter, a site that wasn't around when Destructoid got started. I accept your embracing of new technology, however, as one that trusts Destructoid's journalistic integrity, and is used to how it had been run in the past, I was just letting it be known that twitter doesn't mesh as well with my gaming life as Destructoid does.

And it seems many users agree.

If the PR companies are cool with you using twitter, so be it. You gotta go what you gotta do. But I, as well as others, do not feel as if twitter is a viable use of Destructoid's talents.

If you have to use it, would it be possible to just restrict twitter contests to twitter alone? Send out your messages to those that want to see them? It just seems that posts such as this are a blatant cry to "get on twitter it's the cool thing to do, and we'll give you stuff if you do."

There are those that want to use twitter and have signed up and are aware of D-toids presence there. Posting the twitter only contests on twitter only would make more sense. They could possibly be rewarded with more swag if they decide to go offsite? I don't know how the whole marketing thing works I guess. I'm just speaking as a fan of THIS site, and find it hard to be told to use a less reputable one.

Regardless, sorry again that I made waves. I love everything else.

Lol @ people complaining

You don't want to sign up on twitter fine, just accept that you're gonna miss out on whatever happens or comes out from there. I say this as someone who had to sign up for myspace cause his friends used it to give party info through there.

It never ceases to amaze me how people find an excuse to complain about everything. Is Dtoid obligated to give you free stuff? Are you obligated to enter their contests? The answer to both is no. For people who don't want to use Twitter, that's fine, but stop complaining so much.

I love the other contests. Especially the creative ones. Even though I don't win I get to see what people have contributed and I'll nod and say, yeah I can see how that guy deserves it. (nod to steampunk photo shoot)

But Twitter? man. That's like saying everyone thinks red cars are the newest biggest thing, so we'll only give prizes to people who come to our house the FASTEST, but only if you're driving your brand new shiny red car.

@PhazonYoshi - thanks I'll check out TwitterFox, but what if you're not in front of your computer? this contest happened while I was out to lunch. Oh well, I guess I'm just a casualty of the 2.0 interwebs.

Alright guys, I'm not mad. I'll try to keep up. But those are my 2 cents.
