Twitter and Last.fm the biggest E3 announcements for Pachter photo
  share: Twitter Facebook Reddit Digg
filed under: #Twitter

While most gamers were blowing their loads over Metroid: Other M, debating the merits of the PSPgo or getting creeped out by Milo, industry analyst and crazy soothsayer Michael Pachter has held up the long-forgotten announcement of Last.fm and Twitter on Xbox Live as E3's biggest announcement.

"The announcement that I thought was missed was the opening of the Xbox Live Dashboard interface to the Internet," says Pachter. "Admittedly, the selection is limited to these four sites [Twitter, Last.fm, Facebook & Netflix], but it's a start, and is a glimpse into the future of the Xbox 360 as a home media/Internet hub.

"I think that this announcement was far and away the most important one of the show, and think that the media completely missed its importance."

Pachter believes that Microsoft is hoping to turn the Xbox 360 into a "functioning computer that just happens to be located in the living room and connected to the television," giving it a "huge start" over rival Apple and its AppleTV plans.

It actually was a pretty big announcement, especially with regards to how big Twitter and Facebook are. Microsoft now gets to boast about having access to two of the most popular sites online, even though the Wii and PS3 can access every single site in existence thanks to a built-in browser. It's funny how Microsoft can pull that off convincingly.

Haven't microsoft always said that their vision for the xbox is NOT as a home-Pc. I mean, that's why they don't have usb key-board support or a web-browser in the first place.

Comments like this make me want to pat Pachter on the bum and say, "that's nice sweetcake, now please, the men are speaking"

er, there is USB keyboard support on the 360. I use it when I can't be bothered to type stuff out using the pad.

As for these things, last.fm is pretty much the only one I care about. Although this "take a picture in game and post it to facebook" idea also sounds kinda cool.

Who needs an Errorbox with access to certain websites? Just get a PS3, plug in any USB keyboard / mouse and use the browser! They've even made special "optimized" versions of youtube and the BBC Iplayer!

All while it's recording my TV shows on PlayTV and runs the BEST games and lets me watch glorious HD Blu-Ray films, can transfer files straight off almost anything plugged into it's handy USB slots and streams music / videos from my laptop, wirelessly (without an expensive add on).

Win.

Not to mention the way my buddies can bring DVD's filled with Divx files and shit round and we can watch them on my PS3. When Blu-ray writers become a bit more widespread we're gonna fit so many episodes of the Wire onto one of those bad boys and watch them straight through the PS3. Did i mention how future proof it is?

A friend actually said yesterday, "I'm starting to realise that all the cool, handy shit you can do with your PS3, doesn't work on the 360, I'm glad I didn't buy that 360."

Win.

@SexualChocolate.

Seriously, Sony should pay you for that shit. You do a much better job of selling the PS3 than those Sony Cuntfists.

Still, you'll have to work harder on me. You effectivly say the same thing with diffferent words over, and over, ad infintum. Not forgetting your oh-so-convincing 'friend polls'

Here's a challenge: Try and write one pro-PS3 post without using the word 'errorbox'

Oh, and the BEST games thing is bullshit. How about inferior multiplatform games, and the - slightly more frequent now than what should of been when the damn thing launched - first party beauty?

I think Microsoft is able to pull this as something of a victory due to the fact that these sites are going to actually be integrated into the dash as opposed to accessed through a browser. There's actually a big difference.

I know for my part, I'm not going to bother with Twitter or Facebook if I have to fire up the 360, open the browser, navigate to the page, and start typing. Hell, i don't bother with that stuff on my PC and it's already on!

But if it's integrated into the dash so that when I fire up the 360, it's right there anyway? The convenience makes it less of a bother so I'd consider wasting a few minutes updating some stuff before firing up a game of Red Faction.

@ChaosTeaCup

I like to call it an errorbox, it tickles me that people keep buying them and they keep failing and people keep buying more. It's crazy.

I sure do say the same things, but the PS3 still has all the same features that blow the 360 (see, didn't call it an errorbox) out of the water. To be honest, until i read this post I thought the 360 had a browser!!! It's a bit of a given for a console in this day and age.

You see Sony don't need to add too much to the PS3, because it's already got it all. The odd extra here and there but no need for major extra features, unlike the 360 for which MS adds something little and make out like it's the next big thing (even though the PS3 has always done it, straight out of the box)

I would love to work for Sony's marketing team (i work in marketing as it is, in fact I should be working right now..) if they focused on the important things they would certainly see a bit more success with the PS3.

On paper it really does blow the 360 out of the water. The only thing the 360 has going for it is a bigger userbase, which is mainly down to it's cheapness, which leads to dev support, better multiplats, Activision CEO wankish comments etc.

Sony are failing at marketing the PS3, there sitting back allowing things like Facebook and fucking Twitter on the 360 to be "big news" when their console has been doing that since launch!

It's a shame for Sony...

1) Put WAY MORE money into developing a FAR BETTER console. - happens to be at the beginning of a credit crunch / recession.

2) Sell at a loss, not making enough money to buy those "available on PS3" tags on the end of multiplat adverts that MS love so much.

3) Suffer fewer sales than your cheap, unreliable, feature lacking competition.

4) Devs treat you like an "additional" console, port games which don't run as well. Survive due to awesome exclusives by 1st party devs, that just won't fit on a DVD or run on a 360.

It's pretty shit to suffer because your product is too good, albeit well priced, but too "prestige" for what a struggling market can afford.

They want to turn the 360 into a PC that happens to be in the living room?

A PS3 already is a PC that is in the living room, includes a BR player, and has an optional TV recorder! Let alone all the other features that 360 is lacking.

Oh, Choccy-choc-choc-chocs...Thanks for the lengthy reply. You'll be pleased to know I didn't gloss over once you'd passed my challenge (though you didn't to be fair), and I read the whole thing.

The thing is, browsing the internet on the PS3 is fucking awful - way too clunky, hence it's never bragged about. The same will apply to the xbox, but I think the difference here is that this is a partnership. What you pull up on the xbox will be Twitter/Facebook, etc, designed to work in the NXE environment, not pulling up the actual website and clunking around on your shitty sixaxis... That is a big difference, hence the 'news' It's not something that excites me in particular because I spend so much time with a PC that I dodn't want/need that environment on my ACEbox ;0)

It's unfortunate that you have such a completely pro-PS3/anti-360 stance, as anybody but the most blinkered of fanboy plebs, can see that there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. Ones that don't really need going over. If I could believe you had your tongue in your cheek, your comments might be amusing, but as it is, it seems you're completely sincere, and as such come across as a bit of a joke.

Which is great.

Microsoft does one thing right with xbox360. It didn't turn it into a PC. Full browser support on Wii and PS3 may sound like a great deal, but it does not really work out that way.

If I can justify the design decision, integrated applications approach rather than a generic browser approach provide the following benefits:
1. Does not have to support the gazillion standards available on a browser market.
2. Does not have to worry about installing the latest version of flash player or other add-ons.
3. Integrated means you can expand the program beyond the single application (e.g. you can bring up the last.fm while you are playing a game and play it in the background, facebook can be directly accessed while you are waiting in the game lobby, etc.). I don't know how far Microsoft will extended, but integrated app can provide a lot of flexibilities.

Convergence of technologies appears to be inevitable. We will most likely have a one or two electronic boxes which will do everything. However, I don't like the approach b/c

1. Dedicated special purpose hardware works better than a single box solution.
2. You can do multiple things with them (e.g. read cheats on your laptop while you are playing games on your console, etc.)
3. When stuff break down, it's easy to fix or purchase rather than giving up my single wonder box for a few weeks.
4. I like keep things separate (e.g. dude I play PC games and work on PC in my den. My laptop goes with me around the house if necessary and I play games on console. I hate switch between monitors on my HDTV. I like to keep it simple, keep it to one channel and I use it for that purpose.)

If PS3 allows you to use Internet Browser in any game or cross functional apps in PS3, it would be awesome, but Sony did not make that decision when it created the interface. It created the interface for the wow factor. I do think xbox360 GUI is a lot more functional and universal.

It's is one of many reasons why I haven't purchased the PS3 yet.

Xbox 360 does not break down as often as everyone says. I bought three xbox360. First gen RROD after 4 years. I gave one elite box to my nephew and he is using it just fine. I have my own RE5 elite box and it seems to work fine. I have not crossed the mythical realm of RROD. This type of product lasting 4 years is acceptable to me since I purchased new graphic card every 6 months back in the old days spending 1000s. I just don't get the real sense of community with PS3. Xbox360, me and my coworkers are all wired together via xbox live on xbox and PC.

While I think that access to twitter and facebook are useless additions to most any gaming console (most people would just use their computers), the idea of "access to the internet" IS an interesting one.

When EPIC made UT3, they released it for the PS3 and gave us the ability to freely download cooked mods or mutators off the net because the PS3 had an "open" system. Through the PS3 web browser we could access web sites for content. When they brought UT3 to the Xbox, EPIC was unable to bring this freedom because of the closed system and XBOX owners of UT3 became reliant on specific content being packaged and made available to them as DLC updates.

... by having a more open system, it could in the long run, mean more than just access to social networking type sites... it could allow for developers to more directly integrate web content or web access into their games.

I've always liked that the PS3 can be more like PC games... with the ability to freely use mods and mutators (should the devs allow for this)... and maybe the Xbox system is gradually going to allow something of this nature as well.

You can not honestly attack a console and defend another with any kind of authority without even knowing the basic features of each console.

I would love to have something like last.fm or Pandora integrated into the PS3 under the music section or something. The PS3's browser is kind of slow and takes awhile to type stuff, so... yeah.

As for Facebook and Twitter access... Meh. I guess the way that they're integrating it into the 360's Dashboard is cool, but I know Sony would try to make it adhere to the XMB layout and it would be super unwieldy. So I'd rather just use my MacBook from my couch to access that stuff. And that is ultimately superior to the 360's integration.

Its funny thatnobody, OP included have even mentioned what the integration actually involves, because it means far for to Microsoft and xbox users than just access to a site.

For example you'll be able to set twitter and facebook updates to "pop up" while you play games or browse Live. No need for booting up a laggy, buggy browser which has no attachment to the console whatsoever.

Its also been overlooked just how much advertising power this will give microsoft.

Xbox avatars can be directly imported onto facebook, meaning your facebook friends will soon be sporting Microsoft created content/avtars in their albums, which in itself is fantstic advertising.
Also, Your gaming activity can be linked to your facebook or twitter status.
Soon, your facebook friends status's will read automated achievement messages... "Billy Gates is online playing Gears of War 2 on Xbox 360"... "Billy Gates has just unlocked the Mass Marketing Achievement... ON XBOX 360"

Also..Twitter, famed for its "Trending topics" will have the same functions.. meaning when a new game releases on 360 you can expect the trending topics to consist of 360 gaming related posts and achievement updates.
Also, you know that little bit of text under every tweet on twitter which tells you where the user updated from (Web, Mobile etc..).. Well soon you'll see a lot of "Updated via xbox Live" under tweets... Again, this is all fantastic brand awareness, which is what MS do best.

with every xbox 360 gamer having their gamertags linked to their social networking sites, expect xbox Live Gold uptake to flourish.
Its an incredibly shrewd move.

Why can't Microsoft just announce a f***ing web browser instead of wasting money on pointless deals?
PS3/PSP/Wii/PC have web browsers.
Why not the 360?
I don't get why people at E3 think this is so revolutionary for consoles when the PS3, PSP, Wii, and PC could already do these features and more from the very beginning.
It's unbelievable how people are eating this s*** up at E3.

As you can see. This is more than a tacked on browser. This is an integrated app. Still not really my thing, but Sony girls ripping into MS for this, are missing the point entirely.
