Remember when Eat Sleep Play was aiming for a T-rating for the upcoming PlayStation 3 Twisted Metal? It's given up that plan; the game will now ship with an M-rating.
"Without the blood," Eat Sleep Play's David Jaffe told a crowd during a panel at Comic-Con (via GameSpot), "it felt a little weird, frankly."
During an on-stage demo, Jaffe showed off a few of the game's weapons, including a sniper rifle. After landing a headshot with the gun, the skull exploded in a fountain of gore, something you definitely wouldn't have seen with a T-rating.

When the game was first announced at E3 2010, Jaffe was pretty clear about the line the studio was walking to get that T-rating, which theoretically could have broadened the audience for the title.
“The way I’ve been thinking about it, and this comes through especially in the weapons and the stories, it’s kind of like anything that can air at like 8 or 9 o’clock television is okay for us,” he told us in 2010. “We’re shooting for an edgy Twilight Zone vibe versus the dark depression that we did in Black. It’s not as light and frothy as [Twisted Metal 2]; that was very cartoon-y and comic book-y. Somewhere in the middle.”
"There’s the 8 o’clock CBS serial killer, and then there’s the HBO serial killer," he said at the time. "We’re doing the 8 o’clock CBS serial killer.”
Twisted Metal, now an HBO serial killer with its M-rating, hits shelves on October 4.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm sick of all adult media being nerfed to get kids pennies.
And anyway, its not like its illegal for kids to buy it in the USA anyway. Lol
Its not going to get it anyway with the holiday lineup its facing. This series peaked on the PSX and was better off left behind.
That regulation falls on the employer to the employee and the decision lies with the parent, as it should be. If I go to work and I sell an M rated game to a minor and my employer finds out from a parent that wasn't asked - I get FIRED.
I think that's effective self-regulation, don't you? I don't think fines or nanny-state laws are needed in the face of potentially losing your job.
Can't wait to get back to it!!
Otherwise it looks like you've contradicted yourself by adding that quote.
Like MS did with ODST.?

I'm confused is this some sort of typo? :I
Keywords here are "he said at the time," meaning at E3 2010, when the game was scheduled to get a T-rating.
Seriously though, I'm really looking forward to this. It will be nice to play a shooter that's "A bit" different for a change.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
This hardcore Twisted Metal fan can't wait to add the newest incarnation to my shelf along with my copies of TM1,2,3, Head-On and Black. Well done, Jaffe and crew. This is a Day 1 purchase for me now.
