Twilight Princess glitch revealed

3:53 PM on 11.27.2006   |   Faith

The guys over at Dustinsoftware.com have discovered a glitch in the Nintendo Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that could prevent you from finishing the game. They created the above video of the glitch at work.

They discovered that after the player saves in the room with the big cannon that Link is unable to warp the cannon out of the room because the game claims a man is watching you still, but if you look around no one is there.  If you try to leave the room, the man appears at the door and won't let you leave.  You're stuck.  You can't leave and you can't progress the storyline.

So for those playing Twilight Princess right now, don't save in the cannon room.

Did they try resetting the game? -_-

I find the wolf transformations are LOS based. So, if there is just an invisible mob somewhere, you *should* be able to go out of LOS to individually warp out. But, if the mob is just being omnipresent, then you're probably SOL until a patch.

Resetting the game would mean that you would have to load from an older save point.

Hmmm.. I wonder if the Wii fanboys who posted the GOW "glitch" (a dead guy moving no less) in the frontpage of Digg are taking a note on this?

Before you say it , yes I know an RPG/adventure has a lot more chances to have a bug due to its complexity, still DAMN IT! this is a gamekiller bug! this shouldnt have passed through beta testing.

I sincerely hope they are releasing a patch.

There's lots of games that break at points like this. That is the problem when you can save at any point in time. There's no way to catch all these bugs as it would require save/loading every time you took a step.

As for being game breaking. Hardly. If you're playing through on only 1 save, learn2rpg. It's all about using all 3 slots to leapfrog through. This is just about as game breaking as the original Zelda save files getting corrupt, except now we can copy the saves as much as we want, and can even back up saves on SD cards, and... well... you get the point.

This type of thing happens to me all the time in Zelda. Of course, eventually, I solve the puzzle in the room.

This kind of bug is hard to find, it's hardly surprising its in the final version, The beauty of the Wii having web access is that when its sent to Nintendo, they'll fix it, They wont let their flagship product have "Gamekiller" bugs in.

@DeusPayne: I've been playing RPGs for years now, and I still don't use more than one save file. Sure, it may be a smart thing to do because crap like this happens, but that's no reason to say it isn't gamebreaking. Just because the player doesn't count on there being a gamebreaking glitch doesn't mean it's his fault when he stumbles across it.

I've said before that I'm a pretty big Nintendo fanboy, but COME ON PEOPLE. Don't defend them when something like this comes up.

Meh, I'm a PC guy at heart, so maybe I just save way more than anyone else. But still, it's not a gamebreaking bug. It's a savebreaking bug. Backing up saves, leapfrog saving, reloading an older save, are all ways to prevent this bug. If, on the other hand, it was like the Black and White bug where you couldn't beat the last level, ever (without a patch). THAT is a gamebreaking bug. Regardless of user input, the game is broken. I hardly count a specific series of actions being done at a specific point of time, and ignoring any other workarounds a gamebreaking bug. Like I said. Savebreaking. Not gamebreaking. breaking... limitbreak?

Aw, dammit, I thought it was gonna be a fun glitch like one of the ones from Majora's Mask. I've only just arrived in gerudo Desert, hopefully I'll remember this when I get that cannon room.

but then he went away again, maybe it had to do with gameshark we'll never know

Sadly, this isn't really the case here. If you were playing normally and didn't save in this room, all you have to do is talk to the dude to walk out of the room (which happens here) and then proceed to warp. I would think that if he hides right next to the wall by the door he might avoid LOS by the guy and be able to transform out. But perhaps not. It's a real shame for this to happen in this room, as it's rather far into the game.

I'll never come across things like this because I don't usually save when I'm right at a puzzle. I guess I've got a good habit to get into.

I'll admit to being dumb and only using one save. Not sure why as I tend to cycle saves it most other games. Think I will start here though just in case. :)

It does raise the interesting question of patches though. With only 512mb is Nintendo going to release them for bugs like this? Do we really want to load up games and then grab patches (or worse, play through a buggy game and then see a patch released a week later).

Perhaps some autosave at fixed points would be a better idea, it should reduce the memory overhead by being at a fixed point and allow better bug testing should something crop up like this.

I just really don't want to be patching games on consoles <evil eyes at MS>

Fake! Its soooo obvious they hard coded the game to break down like that! Nintendo is infallible bitches!

So, I went to go recreate this glitch. It's a doosey. Even if you kill yourself with bombs, you spawn in the room still. Thankfully, due to my obsessive saving (and prior knowledge of the glitch), I'm not stuck. I'm gonna hang on to the glitched save file to see what Nintendo does to patch it (if they do).

I am stuck at another glitch (I believe). I am at Lake Hylia trying to gather all of the light bugs, but I simply cannot lock onto the bugs in the flying section. Has anybody had this problem?
Cheers!

....And this game was in development since when?

Seriously, they delayed the game so much, I figured it would be near perfect.

Sigh...

What ever happened to that Bubble Bobble game released on the DS a while back, that had a non appearing boss like 30 levels in and you couldn't get any further. I guess they replaced the defective carts at a great cost.

I still swear I got a glitch in Wind Waker when you had to catch the guy posting the letter. Couldn't get that working and then gave away my GC and games to my Nephew so didn't ever figure it out.

I wouldn't call this glitch worthy of a patch? Not only is it completely avoidable, but its actually pretty unlikely most people will ever even see it. Maybe fix it in future presses of the game, but any more than that is overkill in my book.

All these glitches have been filed away for future avoidance. Thankee sai.

Subnet6... "anymore is overkill"?!? are you serious dude? We've hit next-gen now, no excuses for bugs, find 'em and fix 'em... smoke them out if you have to, but an update isn't that hard to do, and shows commitment on the companies part to maintaining a full product....

As avoidable as it is, not everyone reads forums like this, so the few people out there that actually do make the mistake of saving and exiting in that room are going to be angry angry gamers!

I save over all three slots and interchange between them regularly... but still... I'm feeling the pain and anguish!

moclippa is obviously not an XBox 360 fan since he says bugs are inexcusable :P

And about the bug thing at hyrule late..um, perhaps those bugs arent collectable and just random bugs flying around? they do have bugs that are just in the game for look.

I'm with DeusPayne on this one.

Bugs will ALWAYS happen. I have no idea what platform you game on but every platform I've ever gamed on has had some bugs.

You say they are inexcusable, I say they are unavoidable.

And in a case like this where the bug is only visible if you do certain things just right, I don't think it's a big deal. Obviously, it sucks for the guy who finds it but thats always the case with bugs.

I expect a company to do its best to avoid bugs and if its a universal bug that effects everyone or damages the experience in a way that is not avoidable by the user, I'll expect a fix.

In a case like this, I think a public announcement from Nintendo that you should NOT save in that particular room would be plenty, along with fixing it in future releases.

An update is totally unnecessary and in fact, I HATE the idea up update/patches on consoles. If you assume games can be and will be patched then developers will take advantage of that and start releasing unfinished games. It's already happening and this to me is MUCH more inexcusable than the occasional bug.

Thats just my opinion.

Is it just that nobody cares anymore, or what? I posted that last comment like 4 years ago and I still haven't gotten a reply...I may have to just play through the first 30 hours of the game again and test it myself. (whoever gave TP a 4 needs to die a horrible painful death...of DOOM! Yes, it was slightly more familiar than I would have liked it to be, but so what? 'twas better than a 4)
