Turning your Guitar Hero controller into a musical instrument photo

If you're looking to make better use of your Guitar Hero controller or are in serious need of a time wasting project, The Guitar Zeros have a solution. You've probably heard about the controller-wielding band before, but if not, a video showcasing one of their performances can be found here.

The band was nice enough to put up a guide showing exactly how they went about making their Guitar Hero controllers behave like musical instruments. While the guide has been out for a while, The Guitar Zeros just recently released their custom "FRETBUZZ" software.

So, if you have a PC (or a Mac if you feel particularly lucky), an X-Plorer or a PS2 Guitar Hero controller (requires USB adapter), and some free time, you too can earn extra geek points by pimping out your controller. The best part? No modding is required -- it's all done using software.

I would never do this, but if an opening band busted out some guitar hero controllers and actually started jamming at a venue somewhere, it wuud be de sexiast!

Looking for something else to do with your GH controller?

Fret Nice
A 2D platformer along the lines of DK Jungle Beat, but played with the GH controller.
It recently won "Best Game Concept" at the Swedish Game Awards.

Oh nice. I saw the trailer for it on GT.com, but wasn't sure if it was up for download. I'll have to try it out tonight.

I've been playing with this for hours. It's a lot more fun than I expected it to be. A side note - it works great under OS X. If there's any other Mac users out there who are having trouble with this, feel free to message me and i'll help you out as best i can.

Now all the controllers need is frets and strings, then they'll be actual musicians.

Right, because unless an instrument has strings or frets, it's not valid.
