Does this mean there are two X-COM titles in the pipe? Or was the other one ditched in favor of this?

@Andy: 2K pushed the FPS version back to the furthest reaches of space and time, but it still exists.
I doubt for much longer, though. Let's face it, they've gone back on their word about how nobody wants a strategy game and are aiming to release this one by Fall 2012.

Looking forward to seeing some footage of this in action. It sounds great so far, and seeing as how Civ Rev turned out pretty amazing, I have little doubt that Firaxis can pull it off on all platforms.
I still want the hyphen back, but... I'M AM VERY VERY OKAY WITH THIS! And hey, if it tanks... We still have Xenonauts. It's Firaxis, though, so I'm pretty certain we have nothing to worry about.
I would be excited, except Civ 5 was a bit of a let-down. Sure, it seemed really neat at first, but I've generally found that it lacks both the heart and the depth of its predecessors. Also, the follow-up support as been really lacking. Instead of real new features or interesting additions.. we've had over a year of map and civilization DLC. *yawn* Meanwhile, you still need a mod if you want the cool graphs and info. that has been a core part of Civ since the first release.
I'm more interested in, for example, Paradox's Syndicate clone: Cartel. There is also an X-Com clone called Xenonauts being developed that is available on Desura. I bought the alpha version, but it's still pretty early. http://www.desura.com/games/xenonauts

Whoa... Steam's daily deal is the X-Com Complete Pack for $5. Or you can just get the original (or any of the sequels) for $1.69. If you'd like to see why today's announcement is such a big deal, I'd suggest you check those out.
Alright, this is good. Let's hope after they make this they can swing around and pump out a new alpha centauri as well. Loved both those games!
I'm very excited to see how this turns out!!! I tried the original, and it's just too complicated and unintuitive for me. I hope this new one will ease people into it a little better.

Am I the only person who really dug what I saw of the FPS? I mean, I love the turn-based games, so I'm happy this exists, but I'd be sad if the FPS went away because of it.
Yes this is what I had hoped for, as long as they turn out a quality product and don't load it down with draconian DRM, its a guaranteed sale. Not too worried about those first two things since it isn't being handled by Ubisoft :P

Well if it's being made by the same guys who created my digital crack (known to you mortals as Civilization) I'm in.

Awesome, I always thought turn-based is more apt for consoles than RTS. Hopefully Julian Gollop will consult? I'm almost on the verge of getting a 3ds just to play Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars...
So basically we now have UFO: Enemy Unknown and X-COM: UFO Defense which both refer to the original game and now we're getting XCOM: Enemy Unknown which is the new game. I'd love to have been in the meeting where they decided that title. :)
