Turn 10: Gran Turismo 5 ain't got nothing on Forza 3 photo

Consider it a nice calling out. A polite one. Still, Gran Turismo 5 was called out by Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt.

"I've got huge respect for Yamauchi and what the Polyphony Digital team does, they're a great developer. But do I personally feel confident that it would be difficult for any other racing game to do this," Greenawalt told CVG, speaking on Forza Motorsport 3.

"Gran Turismo is a great game and when it comes out I'll play it. But I think that without the partnerships and without the commitment, it will be very difficult for another team to replicate what we've done."

The "this" Greenawalt is speaking on is the graphics and physics in Forza 3. He says that the game physics run at 360Hz. That's a good thing, I guess. He also says that it looks better than Forza 2, but the physics is where it stands out.

"We still prioritise physics first, not graphics first. That is one of the differences."

Despite the lack of humility, I think Greenawalt is on to something. I need to play a bit more of GT5 to call it, but I think that Forza 3 has superior...everything so far. I've been spending quality time with review code and have basically fallen in love. Forza 3 is f*cking fantastic.

Yes Forza 3 is brilliant but it's unfair to make a call on a game that's still at least 6months away.

Greenawalt has no idea what GT5 may turn into... and by the sounds of things the demos shown at GamesCom and TGS were older builds.

I do think forza has better physics compared to gt. i have gt5prologue and its not bad by any means, but compared to forza it feels a little off. I definately will get gt5 when it drops, but i think forza will be a better game where the rubber meets the road.

I find it amazing how this game came out in a year or two since the last and we have yet to see a Gran Tourismo 5 besides a $40 Prologue.

Let's all rush to talk about a game that's not out yet. Well, so long as we're going on speculation and gut-feeling, I think GT5 will blow Forza 2 out of the water. Every GT game pretty much rocked the house. You just can't beat that track record.

What a grand display of arrogance, typical I guess. Now I don't know which game will prove to be the best in the end, but I do know that PD is one of most committed developers in existence. They spend a ludicrious amount of time on each car. I'm not saying the game will be super duper awesome (although I personally believe this cuz I have a weakness for gran turismo) but really, saying PD isnt as committed is just the biggest bs ever. Get a life greenawalt.

Oh and dale, f*cking fantastic piece of journalism..

No one should ever judge a game before they've played it. You cannot call yourself a gamer if you already know what you think of a game before you've actually played it. This is not gaming, it is delusional fanaticism.

If you fanboy's had the slightest clue of the GT5 featureset... lmao. Real time deformation, weather and day/night cycles, full NASCAR and WRC license, 1000 cars... yea... keep dreaming.

You'll see. I'm coming back to this thread, I swear it.. and a massive call-out will be in order.

I generally hate all realistic racing games. But god dammmmnnnnnnn did forza 2 bore the SHIT out of me :S lol I did get into GT3 (i think it was that one) at one stage years ago. I played it quite a bit. But i tried forza...and it was just lifeless.

So here is my completely useless point (as i havent played either) If forza cant add a little more life to their racer then it will die in comparison to GT5. Maybe sales will be better because there are more 360s out there. But in comparison game wise. Forza just felt lame. GT, even when not in a really fast car was still uber, and as I said, I HATE realistic racers.

Looks amazing, too bad I don't have a 360 or an overly capable PC. NFS: Shift looks cool though in the meantime, and Dirt 2. I guess I'm a GT fan, but if I got a 360 I'd totally check out Forza 3.

What does Greenawalt mean by having 'partnerships' and 'commitment', what did they have that was so special?

You know, anyone angry at Dale's comment re Forza 3 vs. GT5, know that Dale has a pretty big GT hard on, and always has. After playing both games in Tokyo, he walked away rather impressed with what Turn 10 had done, and I was surprised to hear him say he liked the Forza 3 demo. I sent him Forza 3 last week and he's loving it. His statement wasn't "journalism" or based on fact, it was a matter of opinion, and it happens to be the opinion (hence the "I think") of someone qualified to speak on the subject. If you think Dale still doesn't have a chubby for Gran Turismo 5 and won't give the game a fair shake, you're sorely mistaken.

After the massive letdown that was Gran Turismo Portable, I think I'm done with the series.

The thing about Forza 3, based on the demo I played was that the cars have a specific weight to them, something that GT has yet to implement.

Though, you gotta hand it to the guys at Polyphony, they managed to get something resembling a damage modeling system down since GT5 Prologue came out.

You know what GT and Forza need?

They need a powerup you can use when you're in last place, that turns you into a giant bullet and automatically sends you to the front, so people like WormFOODx can play it and still have fun.

GT5 is out?! I totally missed that. Oh what it isn't? Then what are we talking about? I wouldn't really care one way or the other but to compare games before they are both out is a bit... wel stupid frankly. Though truth be told I can think of one thing GT5 is probably going to do better than F3; cockpit view. So perhaps the reverse is true for everything else.

I especially enjoy the Sony/GT loyalists (particularly on N4G) complaining that their game isn't out yet and how it is unfair to compare the two... considering these are some of the same people who were claiming that Killzone 2 would blow Halo out of the water well before it was released. And don't get me started on their "excitement" for Uncharted 2 (which I look forward to playing as soon as I get my PS3).

Dale's played demos for both and shared his opinion. That's his job.

Polyphony has a great track record. But a great track record is for nought if they rest on their laurels. I mean, how can it take this long to release the damn thing if they know what they're doing AND they're fully committed?
I've played GTHD and it had that magical GT feel to it. I can't believe GT5 would be missing that, BUT Forza3 seemed to take the feeling of car-in-contact-with-road that little bit further. It's a top game judging from the demo, and I find it hard to believe GT5 will be better, though it should be very close.

Judging Forza3 on what Forza2 was is only the picture, as it judging what GT5 will be like based on track record, GTHD or GT5P. It's not over yet, but Dale was purely giving his opinion on what he'd seen so far, as a gamer. You can't refute it and you can't argue with it. It's opinion. It's subjective. Your own subjections may well be different. So what? Live with it.

lame. GTHD plays better than Forza 2. The physics that they worry about at Turn 10 are completely wrong. It's like they took real world physics and took out the realism. Breaks never work even when you have the correct grade tires, MASSIVE understeer on EVERY car, even a Lambo. ridiculous.

I'll still buy it but for cheap. F2 burnt me out. I'm ready for GT5 but I want to race now.

Forza 3 is amazing. I prefer the driving model over what I saw in Prolouge (which I'm assuming was close to if not the final model), since the cars just feel more responsive in Forza. There is a lot of attention to detail in Forza that is easily noticed, like the AI and tire wear, which I didn't see or notice in Prolouge (again, assuming most of the basic elements were in it). But what bugs me the most is GT's lack of cockpit view, which I have yet to hear anything about for the final. If GT doesn't have a cockpit view, you can't fully call it a simulation. Simulations aim to recreate the driving experience, which involves YOU driving, meaning you're in the car. And I mean full cockpit view, not an invisible front end view or a hood only view. I understand why the other camera views are available, but for me its cockpit only. So if GT doesn't deliver a solid cockpit view, I'm sadly not interested. I guess I'm just picky.

But no matter what, GT fanboys will refuse to play Forza and insist their game is superior.

Prologue was prologue and it´s over a year old now. And it had cockpits, damn nice ones at that. As for tire wear, it was in GT2, GT3 and GT4 so highly likely it´s in GT5.
Kaz has mentioned the following in various interviews: Real-time deformation, Day/night races, weather, improved physics.

Here's the deal: GT5 is 3 games in one. It has NASCAR, the normal Gran Turismo career stuff, and World Rally Championship. Totalling at around 1000 cars. Forza has 400 cars, and it's on an xbox 360. GT5 is Blu-ray on a PS3. GT5 = instant win.

Also, Prologue was a demo of what we can expect, and as the new screenshots released today, unless your blind, have proven to look much better than forza and Prologue, respectively.
