Turbine opens new studio, enlists former Flagship employees photo

Today, Turbine (Lord of the Rings Online) announced that it has opened a new studio in Redwood, California. In addition to getting the new digs, Turbine has also enlisted two former Flagship Studios employees to help head the western branch. Former visionary officer Dave Brevik and developer Jeff Lind will become Turbine’s newest creative and engineering directors, respectively. It marks the first time a Flagship employee has smiled in months.

Though opening new doors is pretty hip news, there is an interesting quote by Turbine CEO Jim Crowley in which he states that Turbine is looking to “create the new generation of cross platform MMOs.” The last time we checked, there was only one console MMO that Turbine was willing to talk about, albeit with scant details.

Let’s hope that whatever console MMO being built gets the treatment it deserves. I know from personal experience that the California sun has a tendency to impede progress.

is that Redwood City? I ask cause there's a Redwood City in California that has other game companies, and it seems like a good idea to open a new there. But a place called "Redwood"? Never heard of it.

Well.. at least some of the Flagship employees are getting back to work. It's a real shame how many people got screwed over by Roeper and Co.

Roeper and Co. did push their luck a bit, but I wouldn't say they "screwed over" their employees. Roeper himself stated that towards the end he took money out of his own pocket to pay the final salaries and cover up the ending expenses. On the outset it may appear that he thoughtlessly put up Mythos as collateral, but reading Jeff Green's interview from a while back it looks like he wasn't entirely idiotic in doing so, and had reason to trust Hanbitsoft before they changed management.
