Tritton AX Pro Headset making an appearance on gamer reality show photo

Tritton’s AX Pro Gaming Headset seems like a beast. It comes equipped with 5.1 Dolby surround sound and a detachable microphone that’s compatible over Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. It also looks snazzy, which is more than what I can say about these lovely headphones.

Hardcore gaming enthusiasts seem to dig them, as Tritton’s headset was selected to represent them in The Sci-Fi Channel’s WCV Ultimate Gamer -- a reality show that will pit 12 gamers again each other in various digital (I saw RockBand 2, Street Fighter IV and Halo 3 in the show’s trailer) and real life competitions. It airs at 7 P.M. Pacific on March 10, if you’re interested.

We’ll be reviewing the AX Pro Gaming Headset in the coming weeks, so make sure to check back in with us about it. Until then, tell me what you expect from a gaming headset. Or what you’ve always wanted from one.

So is this new Ultimate gamer show just some way to entice gamers with flashy merchandise and to further enforce some kind of hierarchy within the gamer community?

Ooh, quite the beast indeed. But if it's meant for use with PSN/XBL, does that mean it's wireless/Bluetooth?

Also, for some reason I hope that show throws in a match of PC Supreme Commander. Sitting in for two hours while the players set up their economies sounds hilarious.

Any headphone that uses several tiny speakers for "Surround Sound" are awful. Good quality headphones with a Dolby mixer will always produce a better sound.

I have the Tritton AX 360 headphones (which are 5.1 and have xbox 360 mic support) and they're not that special. The voice chat is terrible and the sound is good, not great. Not sure how these compare to them though.

Nice, stick with my $99 Plantronics for now.. dolby digital just as well. Thanks for the info on the show though, going to have to DVR that and see how it is.

hah, "surround sound" bullshit. There's no way a headset can achieve true surround sound. Those quasi surround sound headphones can't compare to a good ol fashion surround sound speakers system.

I've had this pair for a few months and have put them to the test on a lot of recent titles. Loud, directional, and definitely worth the investment. I wouldn't recommend it over an actual home theater system if you're going for sound reproduction,but only if you're an audiophile to the core.

My only major problem is with the mess of wires for connectivity and that you have to use two separate power supplies for everything to work. Also, the 360 mic connector on my pair kept shorting out so I had to re-solder the thing.

@zeroword
These things do use a Dolby certified decoding box.

@unangbangkay
360 connectivity uses a cable and connector similar the standard Live headset which you plug into the controller. On the PS3 you gotta run a USB cable from the decoder box to the PS3 and basically set up your mic settings for a USB headset. So no need to swap back and forth which is nice.

Actually, true 3D surround sound is not only possible with headphones but preferable to a speaker system...of course since no programs, movies, or games use actual 3D sounds right now thats a moot point. The tech is still kind of in research and takes alot of work to feel truly immersive, I got to try some out last year at a lab on campus and it is pretty cool, it basically amounts to an auditory illusion that creates a fun effect. We prolly wont see it it games for some time though...

I haven't logged into my D-toid account in a LONG while, but I had to do so just to comment about these headphones. I got them for $170 on eBay a couple of weeks ago because I just had to get them after trying the pair my brother has, and all I can say is that I believe them to be worth every penny and more. Best gaming investment I ever made. I agree with Teranoid on the fact that the wires do get kind of messy, and two power plugs is a bit much. But man, I love the sound I get from these. I won't game at home without them now. It's like a low-budget, private home-theatre system, and they're excellent for gaming late into the night.

I've had these for a while, and they're brilliant. The only problems are the wires and the in-game voice volume of other players seems really low.

As for the WCG ultimate gamer, I know someone that went on. Said it was the time of their lives...

Second paragraph: "a reality show that will pit 12 gamers again each " don't you mean "against" ?
Sorry for being a grammar nazi.

Pfft, those headphones are wank. Now these are headphones!

The speakers are in the top and the sound is carried by tubes. You can even open the cups to vent out heat haha.

Let me just say I LOVE MY EAR FORCE X4s. They are the shit. Try sneaking behind me in Call of Duty and you're dead meat. The 5.1 on those bad boys are simulated pretty well and the audio quality is great with the exception for a few muffled sounds when things get rediculous. They've made me a better gamer for sure...and comfy too! Oh, the one thing they have over these bad boys.....WIRELESS!....and they work great on my ps3 too!

@Chronic Logic - This is true, but when you don't want to kill the neighbors for a late night gaming session some good 2.1 headphones and a good mixer will do.

@Teranoid - Nice of them to use that but then to combine a mixer and use 8 drivers? I'm sorry to tell you but that is ass. Doesn't matter what their marketing tells you: 8 tiny speakers in your ear is nothing compared to two good drivers with a good mixing. Go to any audiophile website and they will tell you the same thing.

@GrayFox - you aren't the only one.

I have owned an AX Pro since December of last year. Nothing else compares in the headset category. Sound direction is unmatched, bass is unmatched, loudness is unmatched, customization is unmatched. As for a good pair of 2.1 headphones vs. the AX Pro's.... lets see how it is reviewed for a real opinion. Multi-channel headphones have come a long ways and just like 2.0 headphones, there is plenty of crap out on the market. The headset also works with Xbox Live as well as the PS Network... no other headset does that without donkey adapters and none allow you to adjust chat volume separately from game volume for both platforms. All the BS about tiny speakers bla bla bla.... brain washed. I listened to these at CES head to head against the A40, X4 and handful of other headphones, you will be blown away to actually hear the difference. the true test is to actually hear them.
