I will play a game even if it is not on Steam, but I greatly prefer to play F2P games through Steam. Adding that service makes it easier to get my friends to play as well.
The thing about Steam is that it makes you feel like you actually own the digital games you buy. Plus, it makes it easier to play with friends.

I would never limit myself of playing a game like that, but if given the choice between getting a game through Steam or some other service, I would always pick Steam (or GOG).

i'm part of that weird subdivision. it's completely unjustifiable, i know, but steam turned me into an anal retentive who likes having all his games installed together.

I think you should choose your words a bit more carefully in the future. Someone may take this as allowing them to pirate games they feel are good just because they want to play them. Worst-case scenario may have some crazy person maiming or even killing someone to acquire a game "regardless of how that's accomplished."

I can see why people would want to play Tribes Ascend on Steam. Like Tarvu said, Hi-Rez launcher is fucking hideous.

@Rondo - Ah, that's very true. I wish it were implied that I meant legally, but way too many people like to justify piracy :(
Had it already, but I bought the Starter Kit on Steam. I love the lifetime XP boost and the extra classes. And it gets you into playing more Tribes too. I know it was free first, but with the Starter Pack, you might have a better shot in getting the stuff you need.
I actually didn't download this game solely because it wasn't on Steam. I really wanted to play it, but having everything in one directory and under one service just makes launching a lot easier.
If this is anything like Star Trek Online, you will still use the stand-alone game's launcher and updater after the initial installation. So the benefits are so-so.
Still, it's an interesting game and it's nice to see it get more exposure.

Huh, I think I'll put down another $10 for the perks and gold, if not just to further support Hi-Rez. I'll reinstall the client for inherent Steam overlay, too.
@properlyparanoid Really I find steam does the opposite for me cause my game is always tied to another program I have no control over whereas a direct download is completely independent.
I absolutely love this game and was playing it on Steam anyway for all that hot Steamtoid community action so this is great news!
STO's launcher isn't bad at all, Jinx. Another bonus is that Tribes: Ascend FNF will be slightly easier to do.
