Treyarch not interested in keeping kids off of COD photo

Sick of idiotic teenagers trolling Call of Duty? Well, you're boned, because Treyarch has no interest in keeping the kids away from its games.

"I think it should be handled by the ratings board. I don't know a tremendous amount about UK ratings boards, but I do know that you have to be of that age to purchase the content, and if parents want to let their kids play it's completely at their discretion," said community manager Josh Olin. "I get where you're coming from, it's that maybe the kids are more obnoxious to deal with - but hey, they want to have their fun too, so I don't want to kill that for them."

While it would be easy to rage at Olin for these comments, I find them refreshingly honest. It's not often a developer would admit that kids play a distinctly non-kiddy game, and go so far as to state that it's not the studio's problem -- which it isn't, really.

Of course, this doesn't help the people who have to put up with morons on Xbox Live, but I admire a studio that doesn't pretend to give a crap when it distinctly doesn't. It's better than paying insincere lip service, at any rate.

Ratings on products are not ment to keep kids off of the products, it's so parents can be informed of the content they are buying for thier children.

There is nothing wrong (in terms of child psycology) with kids playing M rated games. Sure you as an adult might not want to play with children which is completely understandable, but nothing is stopping you from finding people to add to your friends lists, muting voice chat, and just generally ignoring them.

Remember why ratings were put in place 17-18 years ago. The whole mortal combat fiasco with SNES. That's the only reason. It spread like wild fire.

p.s. I let my son, who is now 12 play M rated games unsupervised. He's educated and not retarded, so I'm not worried about it. That's the key folks, educate your children.

Also just out of curiosity, why is Halo rated M for mature? I haven't played much of it, but it seems like it wouldn't warp the fragile minds of most teenagers.

I think they're right. When it comes right down to it, it's up to the parents to step in and say which games their kids can or can't play. The ratings are for the benefit of parents and their children, but the parents get to make that final yes or no decision.

I can't Blame them...I mean most of the Dbags who bitch and curse out kids when they can simply MUTE them it's funny to see grown men cry about teens and kids when all they have to do is mute them... o.o those same kids are probably better than most older gamer O__O

@LLort don't take this personally but...if you let someone 12-17 ruin your online experience because they are annoying...especially when you have the option to do something about it....then your doing it wrong -.- just saying

Most of the time i'm online they never bother me...and if they do I mute them and continue on with my life xD

Anybody who seriously believes these kids are a problem is a fucking retard. Mute them and they become a blissfully silent person who is just another foe. The worst they can do is teabag your corpse.

And the inverse would be a far bigger PR disaster anyway. Imagine tens of thousands of the little bastards getting banned. Yeah, it's a great thought for US, but looking at it from the company's point of view, that's potentially 10,000 angry parents who spent $70 on a game for their children that now doesn't work. Angry protest much?

Not to mention the fact the ratings board is only for enforcement at the counter. Parents who are concerned about their children playing violent games have already done the work or don't give enough a shit to prevent it. We can't place the blame for poor parenting on the developers of one game.

It's not really a muting thing. When I did play online I didn't even have a mic/headphone. It's just normal online griefers who try to screw up the game, audio or not. Although to be fair I guess anyone online can do that despite age

Let's get real here, regardless of the mature rating, COD's target audience is kids. Every middle/high school kid thinks Call of Duty is the 'coolest' franchise ever. It's right up there with those adrenaline rushing sports games! /sarcasm
Of course I can't blame them. What's more fun that jumping on XBL or PSN and shooting up your friends?

Agreed.

Mute is nice and all but I personally would rather if the kids are playing the game, they'd shut themselves up or just play the SP campaign. As the warning states on any online game "online interactions are not rated". Though, they should probably rate it AO. Especially with how many 12yr old kids are only using the dirtiest words possible, which they most likely picked up from their prior matches with foul mouthed adults.

I also like that the company cares to enough to say they don't care about it. Nice of them to take responsibility. I do know the parents are to blame and not the companies releasing the game. I've mentioned this before but the only reason I even got my grubby 9yr old hands on Mortal Kombat was because of my friend and his parents. Them not giving a damn about what I or their own kids were playing happens all the time to plenty of kids. For some kids(like me) it didn't make me go crazy, but it definitely had an impact. This is definitely a tough subject to talk about briefly, but in the end, the ultimate goal should be education and little more control over kids. I think it's ok to let a kid play violent games when they can be smart about it and not turn out to be awful people. Parents just need to actually "parent" and not let entertainment or others do it for them.

I'm not one to waste my money on trash like CoD, but I have friends who don't seem to take issue with it. So when I'm over at their house enjoying a round of pew pew I tend to mute everyone that has a mic. Always.

@Magnaion

I find the majority of the people that are disruptive are in their late teens/early 20's. Kids are kids. They have more energy and might get more excited then you or I.

Why keep the kids off COD? Why is it only a game for 17 years or older? It is not. There is nothing anywhere that states "you have to be 17 years or older to play this game". The ratings are a recommending guideline by a 3rd party company there to "inform" parents of the contents of the software. It is not a law. It's also not against the law for EBgames or whatever other store to sell M rated games to minors. The reason they dont is purely a choice that was made within, probably to make sure parents dont boycotte their store.

"fucking parents" that let their young ones play COD seem to be causing you distress. Maybe you should find a remedy for that. It'll help with the enjoyment of your future online gaming endeavors.

IMO if you have a 15 year old son that is super excited over the next Mario game instead of the next COD game, you're doing it wrong.

of course the more people playing the better but really the rating systems suck and are far to strict I mean a game like cod can be played by a 12 year old perfecly fine. the fact that they are on avarage more anyoning online has nothing to do with the rating sytem. you could also play on pc there are a lot less 12 year olds there

CoD is the only game that I've ever used the "Friends Only" voice chat filter available on Xbox LIVE, wonderful feature.

Of course that was in the CoD4 days. Now just using the 360's party chat would be equally effective.

My parents didn't keep me off games, and I'm fine. You misunderstood my comment.

What I'm saying is if the parents want to complain to Activision, or Eminem, or Marlyn Manson, that they are ruining their kid's ability to live a fruitful life, it's their responsibility to raise their kids the way they want to raise them, and do the legwork themselves.

So basically, what Obirano said.

They don't give a shit as long as they're making money. Hardly a surprise, but really not a good attitude. That's basically admitting that they don't really give a shit about ratings.

It's easy to give parents all responsibility, but if you work all day (e.g. because you have two jobs) I suppose it's impossible to look after your kid.

MS and Sony could both help by adding an Age Filter to their consoles. I'd even be willing to give my license ID number for verification if it meant I could only play with people in my age group. I would also like a standard region filter built in as well. And when I neg rep a person to avoid playing with them ever again I'd like it to actually work.

All this talk reminds me of a story...

I was playing MW2 with 2 friends and a 7 year old wouldn't shut up. We asked him nicely to stop and he just got louder telling us to shut up. My friend made a "your mom" joke and the kid went and got his mom. My friend then told off the mom for letting her kid play a M rated game and she tried to rebuttal before she got fed up and left. Kid stayed in the game, not saying anything. We mentioned it and it turned out the mom was just sitting there waiting. The argument ended with my friend telling the mom to "suck a dick," she said "Mind your own business" and left the game. My friend then continued to send messages to the mom and she replied calling him a pedophile for talking to her.

The moral of this story is that CoD is not a game, but a $60 babysitter...
