After hearing comments like "World at War is Call of Duty 4 with a new skin" being made around here, it's pretty obvious that Treyarch's latest CoD spin-off was influenced by the strong public reaction to what Infinity Ward achieved with CoD 4.
Luckily, there's more to this story than just that. Senior producer for World at War, Noah Heller, spoke with CVG about how the importance of a solid multiplayer component is steadily growing and why single-player isn't all developers should be focusing on.
"In the olden days of CoD you had multiplayer and you had single-player and they never meet. CoD 4 was a multiplayer sensation so it was very important that we focused on multiplayer and that we got a chance to show our own multiplayer."
He adds that while World at War is obviously built off of Modern Warfare, Treyarch has added its own spice by including vehicles and co-op support.
Say what you will about WaW, but I think CoD 4 became immensely popular in part because of an excellent experience-based system which kept us coming back, and Treyarch was smart to avoid straying too far away from the proven formula.
If only more shooters would adopt a similar reward system ...

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
CoD4 had a great multiplayer experience and I think the leveling up was a huge influence for it as well.
Heres to hoping Infinity Ward is at the helms of the next CoD game.
I may rent this at some point but, seriously Treyarch, grow a spine and try something new, or on your own.
this game is better than I was hoping (MP) and thats because it is EXACTLY the same. good job guys!
They should have changed the game completely, so we could all complain about how they "fucked up CoD".
It played well. The vehicle additions are nice, it's still cool to use the good vs the bad of WWII sometimes, and it feels good.
Like any worth-a-damn sequel, it is using what works and enhancing it.
Sometimes the internet makes me feel like killing.
Anyone... anyone at all?
@ Steel Squirrel
You'll never be able to please everyone - especially gamers. We're a whiny bunch and nothing ever satisfies us. You forget how awesome it is to be a negative and cynical bastard. Try it!
I'm hoping they've changed it in World at War- haven't played the beta yet.
No. I am just going to start killing I think.
I hate games that stick 100% of the achievement points in the single player campaign - "You threw a potato through a window, well done, have 50G!" - but give you nada for grinding out 50,000 online kills, giving up all your weapons 8 or 9 times and not having time to get the golden guns before the frickin' sequel comes out
See, that's funny. I hate it when achievements are done in multiplayer. I especially hate it when the game's multiplayer component is dead.
Why is it funny? We wanted doubted Treyarch could do something as awesome and fresh as COD4 was. Treyarch took COD4 and replaced the helicopters with dogs. It doesn't feel new or fresh at all.
You're using broken logic. Are we supposed to feel like we're proven wrong since Treyarch was able to make a game that plays exactly like 2007's COD4 in what's almost 2009?
