Tretton speaks: PSP HDD and UMDs photo

As I mentioned earlier, the PS3 is taking the digital distribution path seriously. Jack Tretton thinks so. Speaking with Kotaku, he says that the UMD has struggled, and that the fate of the medium is dependent on how well digital distribution thrives. It seemed just about everyone had written off the UMD as a dead format -- I don't see why they're even trying to play the farce of the medium possibly surviving outside of PSP games.

Crecente had mentioned on G4's coverage of E3, right before the Sony event started, that Sony was still planning on a PSP with a hard disk drive or a solid state drive being placed in the machine, and the article says that Sony "continues to play around with the idea."

It's something that's an inevitability at this point. File sizes on PSN range from 100-400mb a piece, and it can go even higher if you've got a full-size movie. In order to keep users from constantly having to switch out files, or buy insanely large memory sticks in order to keep more than a handful of content on their system.

I've been using my PSP for reading manga on the go (rather useful) and have started moving over some of my video files. But in terms of downloading games, I've avoided that. What about the rest of you; how do you use the extra space on your PSP?

Music. Nice portable player, regardless of visual options. Even on my computer I don't need visual display of my music other than song title and band name.

Though I could use a bigger memory stick for the music purpose :/

er....I think a HDD only makes it easier for those custom firmware users to not have to buy mem sticks. Unless Sony ever found a way to lock that out....which I doubt.

It's a cool idea for what it's supposed to be, but Sony's still losing in the end.

Sony is aware that a major draw for the PSP is emulation and homebrew. By adding this in it would only make the PSP that much more attractive, presuming the firmware would allow it.

@Niero I bet they'll just make the firmware easier to crack on purpose if they made an HDD.

.....this is making the UMD even more dead than it already is right?

I hope all the custom firmware works, or even that Sony makes this PSP "Super-Fat" even friendlier to homebrew and customization.

That said, I use the space on my memory stick for music (it's my primary music player) and video (when I work up the energy to convert my files). Also, I use it for...ahem...other filetypes.

I sure hope Niero is right :-)

I use my PSP almost solely as a picture/music/video-player while on the road ( since I like my DS-games so much better :-)) so I'd love to get a HDD in ma psp :-)

@Heretic

I think that's the point of having a battery, for it to be sapped doing stuff with your PSP. It suits my music-playing needs just fine.

Plus, any activity, particularly UMDs spinning in the drive, saps the battery.

@heretic I keep my manga at relatively high quality, so it's something like 30mb/volume, I want to say. I have a lot that I read, though.

i'd be in for a solid state but whats the point... 32 or 64 pro sticks will be out soon enough and even the 16g would be more than i need right now... I do wish that sony would come up with their own way of backing up a umd... so that i could play my games and not have to lug around 12 discs when i travel... discs are noisy, slow and require many tiny parts that can break... sony seems to be stuck on this idea of discs... they did this with the MD (which i still have one and use to this day) and now trying once again with UMD... its just not going to work... give me solid state or give me death =b

sounds like a ploy to cut down on piracy. bet the hdd model doesn't have a card slot and uses special software to sync files to the system, it should hold back the modders for a few weeks.

My PSP has Crisis Core, MPO, Ape Escape, SNES & GBA emulators, and some pictures on it. I think I might get another memory stick to put a series on(about 25 episodes at a time on a 4GB).

I use my PSP almost solely as a video playing super Nintendo emulator so having more space and faster read\write speeds would be nice.

I just got a 4GB for the games and movies and what not... I've only managed to fill 1 GB of it so far, but given a few weeks I'm sure it'll be full. The biggest drawback for me isn't the memory stick size, it's the battery. I can get 6-8 hours of play time on my DS before the battery craps out. With my PSP fat I can get 3-4 hours if I'm lucky. Long flights and car rides are long.

I would use my PSP if it had a hard drive as a total portable entertainment machine.

I've got to hand it to Sony for finally admitting that UMD was destined to fail.

I've got an 8GB memory stick, so...yeah, lots of space. Since I haven't hacked it yet, a lot of that space is filled up with the Soul Society arc of Bleach to watch at my leisure.
