Tretton on PS2 backwards compatibility in PS3: Buy both consoles, 'stack them' photo

If you're wondering what happened to Sony's initial promise of full PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility in the PlayStation 3, the answers is simple: money. Speaking with a small room of journalists at last week's E3, SCEA's President and CEO Tretton explained that the tough decision came down to production cost and hardware priorities.

"It was not our goal to bring a new platform out at $599," he said of the initial PlayStation 3 launch, explaining that they began thinking about ways to lower production costs almost immediately. Weighing the cost of the different components and features, backwards compatibility seemed like something they could afford to lose.

"I think the common feeling internally was that backwards compatibility is a nice thing to have," he continued, "but as you moved beyond launch, there were going to be less times when somebody pulled out a PS2 game and put it in their system."

"If you paid $599 for [one] machine that had backwards compatibility, now for $529 you can get a PS3 and a PS2. You can stack them on top of each other if you really want to," he jokes. "I'm not saying that literally, but [that's] in terms of the financial investment that we ask people to make."

Tretton ignores the fact that it's impossible to stack a PS2 on top of a PS3 because of its curved-top design. And since the slim PS2 opens from above, putting a PS3 on top of it would be foolish. But he does make some interesting points. Is backwards compatibility a deal breaker for you, or are you OK with having two Sony consoles in your entertainment center?

I've got a large backlog of PS2 games to play and not enough space on my entertainment center. Eff you Trenton. I'll buy a PS3 when i can find PS2 compatible PS3's or when it's dirt cheap.

I still play more PS2 games than PS3 games. And with Persona4 coming out later this year, I ain't going next-gen only anytime soon.

Tretton can either STFU or tell Sony to put some all-software BC into their gimped models. Or both.

I call bullshit. The fewer systems I have hooked up to my TV, the happier I am. And I still play the hell out of my favorite last gen titles.

Of all my previous generation consoles my ps2 collection is the largest. Part of the reason i bought the ps3 was so that I could play all the games that my ps2 wouldn't read any more such as ico, as well as being able to upscale all old ps2 games to an hdtv. Both Microsoft and Nintendo offer backwards compatibility on their machines. If sony was smart they would have pulled a Microsoft and discontinued the ps2, but kept the ps3 with backwards compatibility. Instead they have 3 different products on the market all fighting for consumer dollars while offering similar game experiences.

I'm not stacking my consoles until they're built with Lego-esque studs on top, so they come together with a satisfying click.

This is a shame... I never owned a PS2, but there's so many games I want to play! PS2 backwards compability for the PS3 would make my purchase so much more worth it!

So how does cutting the cost of hardware have an effect on Software backwards compatibility? Isn't cell processing the way of the future? Then how come it has trouble with emulating the past? They've shown that it's quite possible with the older 80 gig system, what makes it so different than the 40 gig and the new 80 gig models? There's obviously a market for it if it's kept getting asked about in interviews and "buy a PS2" isn't really the answer I'd want, nor expect from the same people that lauded Backwards compatibility to push their last gen console.

I have the 60GB triple, and I have only two PS3 games. I almost exclusively play PS2 games with it. Im still buying PS2 games all the time.

I just got the MSG 4 80GB PS3 bundle from Best Buy two weeks ago (FUCK YOU, SCALPERS!!!), and one of the first games that I got for it was a PS2 title. I specifically did not get the 40 GB version because it doesn't have backwards compatibility.

The PS2 library is HUGE, so there's no way that I was going to discount it in the PS3. More than that, my TV and receiver already are hurting for available connections. The last thing I needed was a PS2 taking up yet another.

Oh, yeah ... FUCK YOU, SCALPERS!!!

I play a lot of PS2 games on my PS3. I got mine around April/May of last year so I can't remember if they had announced taking out BC from future PS3s or not.

Now that I am in the market for a PS3 I am interested in a 60GB model. I think for me it's the ability to save space and just having the ability to play older games as an option is attractive. Too bad they are expensive to find. =\

If anyone wants a 20gb launch PS3 (full bc, no wifi) there's one at my local gamecrazy for $350.

I still play Killzone, SWB I and II online, and once in a great while Ratchet and Clank online. I play all the above games plus I have yet to play RE4 that I have at the house. I play my PS1 games like the original Warhawk, MDK, Twisted Metal, Quake, and Descent (rarely) and a few odd-ball games. Backwards Compatibility is a great thing to have. I'm only too glad I bought a 60GB at launch.

I'd planned on getting a PS3 at the end of it's lifecycle (when it's cheap) IF it had full backwards compatibility. If that doesn't happen, I just might get a PS2 instead.

How are you supposed to stack the Slimline? Just stupid! If I hadn't gotten a deal on a 60 last November I probably never would have bought a PS3 and would have likely sat out this generation. But it's possibly my favorite console ever at this point because PS3 has some great games of its own and there are still a few dozen PS2 titles that I've got to get to. It's kind of funny how microsoft seems to be doing more with their backwards compatibility and there aren't even any xbox games worth playing.

I'm lucky to have found a store last christmas that had a quickly disappearing short stack of 60GB PS3's on it's sales floor (i snapped that bitch up faster than you can say "red ring of death"). BC is very important to me, as i live in a VERY small room, and don't have room for redundant hardware. I think it's absolute bullshit for sony to expect us to buy TWO machines to do what one was supposed to do out of the box.

I have a huge PS2 library, and quite a few titles for the system that i haven't finished yet. same thing with my PSX titles. I only own 5 PS3 titles, so i play my older games a lot.

I'm a huge sony fan (I use vaio notebooks, have a Clie UX-50, a PSP, a sony TV, sony stereo, i HAD a PS2, and i still have an old first gen PSX somewhere in my closet), and it's very hard for me to say it, because they've always done right by me....but to play on the old dave chappelle sketch: "sony's fuckin' up".

Another fine example of why Sony needs to invest in some decent PR people. I don't want Blu-Ray in my games console but we didn't get much choice about that did we, fucking bellend.

And don't tell me it was necessary. You can count on one hand the number of games that require multiple DVDs (no MGS4 doesn't count, compress that fucking audio already). The ONLY reason the PS3 went Blu-Ray was to push the format.

It would be one thing if PS2 had been binned like the Xbox but the fact that there is still stuff being developed for PS2 makes the decision even more monumentally stupid.

I agree on part, but honestly Blu-ray does enhance the games we get. Necessary? No, but it sure is nice and greatly enhances what we get with the PS3. If they went with two different formats, they'd be spending more money selling two formats for a single console when in the long run Blu-ray is the better option considering the amount of space it can hold and the lack of need to compress data like you do on DVD9.
