SCEA president Jack Tretton is a happy little monkey today, boasting of skyrocketing PS3 sales and the "proof" that demand has always been there for a PlayStation 3.
"Skyrocketing sales, couldn’t be happier with the numbers that we’re seeing, and I think proof that there was tremendous consumer demand, they were just waiting for the price-point to come down," he beams.
Tretton also had things to say about Sony's rivals, Microsoft and Nintendo: "I love [Microsoft's] money. I think they can afford to be more patient, we’re very profit driven, we’re interested in return on investment in a fairly short period of time. I think Microsoft is prepared to go at it from a very steep curve in terms of profitability.
"Nintendo is almost the polar opposite. They know what they do well and they stick to it. They deliver a casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience that’s very enjoyable after 20 years. And they make money, they print money. Their profitability is their key focus and features are nice but profitability is king and I think that is enviable."
I'm glad the PS3 is doing well in spite of all the things Sony's done over the years.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Just saying.
What? MS has screwed over its customers since day one.
Tretton's comments make it sound like he wishes he was either Microsoft or Nintendo, but not really Sony. It's like he's saying, "I wish we didn't need profit so immediately," or "I wish we could make LOTS of profit, too!" Of course, Sony is a giant corporation, I don't see them as having ever been in any real danger other than losing a popularity contest for one generation.
The latter.
Also, who doesn't love inexpensive blu ray players/ home media servers that also happen to play PSX games. Now everyone gets to enjoy Symphony of the Night, FFVII, and Jet Moto!
Joking aside I'm glad the PS3 is doing better now - I've definitely been playing mine a lot more recently. Now if only Sony added .mkv support...
You seem to hate all the company presidents. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a true libertarian condone the likes of Bobby Kotick, and his kind? Is libertarianism the same as capitalistic anarchy? It's kind of confusing :/
You can be a libertarian and still think Bobby Kotick is a jackass. I defend his right to charge $1000 per game if he wants. It doesn't mean I won't criticize him when he does it. But I will NOT call for the government or anyone else to tell Activision how much they can charge for a game. When capitalism is allowed to function as it should these kinds of problems work themselves out -- you can only charge what people are willing to pay.
If someone was a buttlicking corporate-loving "libertarian", then yes, they would probably adore any company president that believes in screwing people over. However, the original people who called themselves libertarian were much different, and were suspicious of anyone with a great deal of power, company presidents included.
The term libertarian has become diluted and misused to the point where a lot of people who call themselves "libertarians" have no idea what the hell they are talking about. Look the term up on Wikipedia or elsewhere if you're interested in learning more.
Perhaps I had the wrong definition of libertarian then.
Haven't heard from you in a while. What's Up?
They cut the price? Not really...its more like they've gimped the console so much that couldn't justify the full cost.
The PS3 is the only Sony Console to not improve with age.....the PS1 did...the PS2 did...even the PSP has...but the PS3 continues to lose features rather than gain them.
I have 2 Launch PS3s....and am actually glad I paid such an exorbitant cost for them.....even if I watch movies more on my PS3 than play games.
mmmm. Troll much?
Other systems have lost features as well. The original PS lost a few connector ports that no one used.
Otherwise, the only thing the Slim doesn't have over launch PS3's that matters is the backwards compatibility. The extra USB ports were a bonus too, but it's an easily solvable problem. The lack of media readers make obvious sense because it was a stupid addition in the first place thanks to the USB ports.
And I think it's a fairly big deal that now you start out with a huge hard drive included. That's ~$50 people don't have to spend on upgrading to a larger hard drive. Also, it was annoying to have to back-up all my stuff, find a program that would format my new HD correctly and then transfer it all on to there as well.
Glad I had the option to do so, at least.
I saw the interview and Jack was well spoken and never BASHED the competition once.
Why don't you be a JOURNALIST for ONCE or is gaming not to be taken seriously? You do know that to be a journalist you are to be impartial or is the Billion dollar gaming industry just a joke.
One thing is for sure, your reporting is more like an opinionated BLOG and nothing more.I sure hope you don't get payed for this garbage or someone is getting ripped off.
1. I'm a blogger, not a journalist. Nice try insulting me, but that just failed.
2. I never even said Tretton bashed the competition. I have no idea why you're imagining that I did. Are you prone to fantasizing elements of your life?
3. I do get paid. Quite well actually. And it's thanks to people like you who comment and read my work. Thanks. I'll have a drink on you.
I want my money back.
But... but...
He's being reasonable!

owned.
The PS1 and PS2 were special times for me, and the PS3 has been great so far. This industry needs Sony, for whatever reason, so it's good to hear things are looking up.
Also, fuck Microsoft.
Just kidding.
Also, PS3 this, Xbox that, Wii this... there I contributed to this topic.
I'm glad the PS3 is finally being recognized as what it is, the high price, coupled with xbox fanboys spouting about how it's "not as good as an xbox" or "the online isn't as good" or "it's got no games" has certainly damaged it's sales and reputation.
However Sony's plan is coming into action, they always drive a hard bargain at first, for the early adopters, then a couple of year in a slim and a price drop and bam here comes the masses that have been waiting patiently.
Cannot wait for Uncharted 2, the beat is fucking sick, loving me some Demon's Souls right now, and litterally buzzing for MAG. It's going to be another good year to be a PS3 owner.
Yes my daughter lives in Switzerland, and yes it is a total headfuck.
SC - you had your little'un yet? If not, must be really soon, huh?
Vinny is due on 1st Jan, so not quite here but only round the corner. Cannot wait! Will become a lot harder to find gaming time though!
Although, i've already been practicing with a friends baby, by practice i mean seeing if i can hold a baby and a PS3 controller / PSP! i reckon it's doable when he's asleep.
Kids love to waggle!
Oh and Hey Chocolatey Sex! i'm touched and honoured by your username, and hope it's not just a weird coincidence.
