Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Yesterday met with three Nine Inch Nails tracks being added to the vast roster of downloadable content for Rock Band, and in the days leading up to the songs' availability Rock Band aficionados and angsty teenagers alike were atwitter with anticipation. Yet as intrepid explorers into the world Trent Reznor simulation (sans questionable relationships with fellow musicians) loaded up their respective consoles and the first chords of The Perfect Drug rang out, the gleeful squealing foretold by Destructoid's own all seeing oracle Nick Chester came to an abrupt halt.

Now, being familiar with the works of Nine Inch Nails, I knew that the drum tracks would be a bit challenging, but even my familiarity couldn't prepare me for the frontal assault on my self esteem that is The Perfect Drug.  Gentlemen, I stand before you a man now humbled, in awe of the supernatural acumen displayed by whomever is playing (on expert no less) in the video above.

I suck so hard at the drums on this game. Impressive playing by that dude.

Anyone find it weird that the keyboards on March of the Pigs are played on the bass, yet the piano is played on the guitars? W/e, i'm just glad they put the actual Halo single version of The Perfect Drug as opposed to the radio single. It r0x0rs

I'm more jealous that whatever drumkit they're using actually registers all of the fast notes. I'd fail pretty quickly because it would drop half of the 16th notes even though I'd hit them all. (I play drums in real life so I'm pretty sure I'm not missing that many notes...I also test with a Big Rock Ending and it really does not register fast repeated notes on one drum...)

@Orcist

For the actual recording, I'm pretty sure Trent records the drum tracks from a keyboard. For live shows he uses real drummers, though.

@Orcist:

Most of NIN's tracks are drum machines, but The Perfect Drug single has actual drums played by Jerome Dillon. They get a little chopped up in the solo, but the base playing is still there.

No wonder this song was never played live...
I'm still waiting on Piggy. That's probably the best Nine Inch Nails song to play drums to.

It's nice to see some challenging drum tracks popping up. I think Metallica's "Blackened" still takes the cake for hardest song though.

This game looks like it would be really fun when friends come over and there is nothing to do. Still though, I used to play guitar and drums and I know what it's like when watching somebody play Guitar Hero and now Rock Band from the video, still doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun though

Really? This is as tough at expert gets on this game? It's still, like, only half the notes.

If anyone wants to buy me the game I'll pay them back if I can't get through this song on expert the first time I play it.

Gold star means you got 1.5x the 5 star score.

And by the way the drums start going apeshit at about 0:58. Im on the last tier on expert but I dont think I could handle that well.

@Joseph -Orcist- Leray and FrozenSPaceMonkey

Actually the only NIN album without live drumming is the frist one, Pretty Hate Machine. Trent has stated he's a big fan of live drumming on albums, which is why he gets guys like Chris Vrenna, Jerome Dillion and Dave Grohl to drum on his albums. Also, the awesome drum solo on Piggy that tibisor mentioned was actually Trent screwing around, but he decided to keep it and use it on that track.

Now I must go back to my room and wait until May for Rock Band to be released in Australia.

That doesn't look that bad, although it gets a little clusterfucked in the middle. However it DOES look tiring, and add in the fact (as someone mentioned earlier) that the drumpads don't respond as well to fast notes as, say, a Drummania machine or a real drumset.

Kudos to that guy though, because I couldn't do it nearly as good as he does.

@tino: I've got them taped down with duct tape a little bit, but if I tape them too far, they start registering the drum next to it. I've yet to find the sweet spot of how far to tape the drum down.

I've resorted, in some songs, to tapping the rim rather than hitting the head of the pad. (That's the only way I can pass Run To The Hills.)

See, now watching that is infinitely more impressive to me than a five-star or FC run of a top-tier song in a Guitar Hero game. Mastering a guitar-shaped plastic peripheral with five primary-colored buttons does not a guitarist make. But to be able to do that shit on the Rock Band drum kit, you have to actually know how to play the drums. Jeez...I’m having a hard enough time on songs like “Green Grass and High Tides” on medium with the drums.

all 3 of the NIN songs are fun, beat them on hard drums pretty easily, but this song on expert whooped me thoroughly after like a minute. ...which is much better than i did on DOA, i'm close to giving up on that damn song. but congrats to that guy, he's got serious skill.

Is it just me or did the solos seems like they were played by an absolute beginner? The main drum parts were technically complicated but every solo it was <bang bang> at a slow tempo and missing the finishing note and not getting credit.

Something fishy is going on here.
GurnKiller's Avatar

So, this was me playing. Regarding the fills (both tempo and simplicity):

I don't know what to tell you about the tempo. When I'm playing it live and watching and listening to the TV, it's in time, but for some reason it comes out a bit lagged when being picked up by the GameBridge (which is what I'm using to capture the gameplay).

The simple fills are meant to be that: simple. Since this was my best run, I wasn't worried about the fills "sounding cool" or anything. I was more concerned with keeping time (which it doesn't sound like because of the lag described above) and not breaking combo.

Thanks all for the supportive comments. And for the record, yes I play the drums irl (for 13 years and counting).
