What the fuck is the problem here?
When people file trademarks, they generally file more than just the one proper name. They most likely have a trademark on anything with the root "Trench" in it - which includes "-ed".
No seriously, Trench and Trenched are kind of different (I don't know if it's too hard to tell in Portuguese the endings of English words, but whatever) but lawyers would of course argue against sense.
Why doesn't Double Fine just license/buy the name from the board game company. Probably cheaper than changing the name in the packaging/game/etc. [which is also not unheard of].
Seriously though. If you come up with a product, do you check out trademarks in every country around the world where the game will be released? Japan, absolutely. UK, sure. France, Germany, Australia, sure... big enough markets. Portugal? Ehhh...
It is a shame to see almost zero buzz on it. Giant robots and tower defense games are two of my favorite things.
"Mobile Trench Defense"? "War Walkers of the Early 20th"? "The Big Red Mech"?
I know, how about, "Gutted"?
Shame its taken a week for you guys (destructoid) to even comment on the issue.
Gundamned for instance, Armored Cored, Geared of Wared or Demon's Souled.
Also, shut up Spectreman.
No need to apologies. Double fine dropped a bollock and didn't do their job properly, Portugal is innocent in this fiasco.
Why would you make a word into a name?
that's like saying windows- oh wait.
Fuck, I'm a huge fan of Mech games, and now that one's out it can't come in europe?
Why must you curse me so much god? Why!?
Let's not forget that p until last month Microsoft would not tell Indie devs exactly when their title passed screening and went up. For some people, by the time their game was released it was too late to advertise because 50 farting games came out and buried it.
