When it comes out it won't even be space invaders. So why do they bother using the name? Is space invaders that big of a name that sells?
I don't think so.

Was it just too much hassle for them to get the license to Independence Day 3?

That sounds like it will be totally inappropriate. Also this doesnt necessarily mean it will be green lit by the way, or even if that that the production will go anywhere. Like how is that Asteroids movie going?

If it looks exactly like Space Invaders, low res sprites and all, then I might see it.

Lorenzo di Boneventura is just one of 13+ credited producers on the last two Transformers movies, and not even an executive one at that. I doubt he had any creative input for better or worse. And as the former president of WB who helped to give us The Matrix, it's not all bad.

Then again he's also developing Asteroids...

"Asteroids" has already been made into a movie, by Michael Bay. He renamed it "Armageddon."

I'll be honest. I'm looking forward to this, how could it be screwed up? As long as it's about humans fighting of aliens it works... Oh wait, Transformers producers? Ugh... So it'll be 80% Human Comedy-drama then...

This could work. What you would do is cast Willem Dafoe and Tom Berringer as rival Space Invader champions who after years of debate over who is better, decide to settle the score at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Just as they begin to do battle, an actual alien invasion takes place. The two rivals recognize the pattern of the alien attack as being quite similar to the game and convince a wiley Air Force General (played by Gary Busey), to build a series of floating concrete bunkers and run a laser gun back and forth underneath shooting the alien armada down.

After countless waves of enemies are brought down, the two realize that they may never win the battle. Just when that happens Ralph Macchio intervenes claiming that a Game Genie code will defeat the aliens once and for all. They employ this strategy and defeat the aliens.

Get Michael Bay to direct for explosions and shit. One of them gets to fuck Renee Russo.

Ugh, great. I don't see why someone would even bother doing this, it they make it realistic then what will be the difference between it and other alien invasion movies? The designs of alien space ships? The fact that one pilot takes out the entire fleet? So much will be changed to the point that it doesn't matter.

Invaders Must Die - meaning name the movie this, or cancel it. "Invaders Must Die" is just a really badass title for anything is all. Though the movie will probably still not be great.

Why not?

What if it's a film about two awesome Space Invaders players competing to see who's best, like Rocky or something. And of course Willem Defoe plays a gamer come out of retirement.
Maybe it could have a seen in a club where Defoe trips out on upper drugs and sees everything as Space Invaders Extreme.

I could see this being totally awesome, in a "Hollywood fucks up everything" kind of way.
Picture the scene where the hero saves the girl from her alien prison and escapes on a starfighter capable of immense destruction. Faced with literal walls of enemy craft, he deftly shoots them down while avoiding their shots, the "PEW" of their space lazers echoing through the battlefield.

Also I totally wanna see that Darwin quote from Infinity Gene work its way in, and in the end of the movie all life devolves until it is back to zero, and we are one with the aliens.

Why? Because most moviegoers are stupid and the people who make films don't care about making art. They care about making money and stupid moviegoers are willing to throw there money away because they know the name and it reminds then of their childhood which was actually a better time because crap like this didn't exist on such a large scale.

The question isn't "Why Space Invaders?" or even "Why Asteroids?". The question is "What happened to John Woo's Metroid?" I remember reading that Woo got the rights to do a Metroid film years ago, and then nothing (thankfully) ever came of it. (Mind, Metroid: Other M may have been worse for the story than a John Woo film.)
