A Transformers game that doesn't have Michael Bay's stink all over it? It's actually happening! Activision has revealed, via Game Informer, that Transformers: Battle for Cybertron is an all-new game slated for 2010, and it's going to be inspired by ... Gears of War?
Battle for Cybertron is an interesting proposition -- while the Transformers will not be appearing as their clunky Generation 1 selves, they also won't be the shambolic horrors seen in Michael Bay's movie. They resemble the comic book versions more than anything -- traditional, but a bit more sleek and stylized -- and are specifically reminiscent of the War Within art style. Megatron will transform into a tank, since a Walther PPK makes for bad gameplay.
It's going to be a third-person shooter, and players will be able to play both as Autobots and Decepticons. High Moon Studios (the Bourne guys) will be developing and the game will hit Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms. Check out the gallery for intensely bad-quality images.

Interesting concept - I like the idea of a change of pace with the game being on Cybertron, and subsequently having their Cybertronian modes, as opposed to the iconic Earth modes.
I hope the graphical style is suitably dark and a little cyberpunk. The last few Transformers games have been a little too bright and sunny.
So I welcome this with open arms.

Let's see, every Transformer game has been bad. Bourne was a one trick loser of a game....yeah, I have high hopes on this game turning out well.
Did you ever play the Transformers PS2 game? No, not the ones based on the new movies, but the one based on the Transformers: Armada TV show. Because that game, at least for me, was one of the very best games on the PS2.

I will wait and see. A good review will be required for me to consider this one.
In celebration, I will spend the next two hours attempting to transform into a toaster. A very happy toaster.

2nd the cel shading idea, make it look like a HD version of the original cartoons! And Prime's trailer had better appear/disappear out of nowhere when I transform.

@ Johnny Justice: I'm pretty sure Megs was a Walther - a Walther with extra stuff on it, but a Walther nonetheless. If you take off all the gubbins, you'd see that his gun is actually pretty teeny. He probably had a Napoleon complex.
...and I will punch the gas if I ever see Michael Bay crossing the street with his soy latte in hand.
