The first time I heard of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon was through Hamza’s impressions of the game from Sierra’s Spring Event way back in April. Ever since then, it’s been one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Like Chad (see “PlayStation Games” in profile sidebar), I’ve been a huge fan of the Spyro series ever since its debut on the PS1. And while most of the games after the original trilogy have been mediocre, this game -- the conclusion to the Legend of Spyro trilogy -- looks like it could renew my faith in the franchise.

The trailer above is the first video we’ve seen of the game, and it’s the launch trailer! Go figure. It seems a bit out of place compared to what I remember about Spyro (granted, I haven’t played any of the games since the first three). Back in the series’ PS1 heyday, things were relatively happy-go-lucky, but that seems perfectly appropriate considering Spyro has grown up. But perhaps I just caught a Lord of the Rings vibe from the trailer because of Spyro’s voice actor, Elijah Wood -- i.e., Frodo -- in addition to, of course, the “epic” orchestral score and shots of huge, lava-infused monsters.

Perhaps this game will make me actually feel like a bad-ass dragon -- as opposed to Lair, which just made me feel ... annoyed and angry. We’ll all find out in a week and a half: The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon will be flying to store shelves on October 21st (aren’t there already enough games coming out on that day?) for the PS3, 360, Wii, PS2, and DS. Hit up the game’s official Web site for more details, and Justin’s post from August to see a bunch of screenshots from the Leipzig Games Convention.

I think this is exactly not what I thought Spyro was... how very odd.

Eh. It looks pretty good. Hopefully the gameplay will make up for the silly seriousness (does that even make sense?).

We need a good dragon game. It's been ages.

I liked the first game. There's a reason I never bothered with the rest of them. It kept seeming like they tried to hard and forgot how to make the games fun and lighthearted.

damn they made spyro look ugly ever since they started this legend of spyro what ever.

what happend to the good looking spyro artwork?

This is the best he has looked in the legend of spyro games and that is not saying that much the character artwork is bad.

I played the first two back when they came out and I was like 8 or something. I thought they were fun but I haven't played any after that. The trailer was good but maybe they're taking Spyro a little too seriously? I mean he is a little purple dragon after all.

and that is a shame they screw up the character model artwork since they can do the pre rendered spyro from ps1 cover artowrk in real time these days.

I mean realy he used to be cute and good lookin now just damn ugly and the first legend of spyro game where he was "young" was even worse.

I like serious spyro.

Hell I rather see Spyro pull a conker bad fur day, and have him rip guys apart in showers of blood, start swearing, and getting drunk that will be bad ass.

It could be like lair only bloody and a good game.

I never cared for the Spyro games since the first one gave me nasty migraines, but I really like The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for the GBA. It's a fun little 2D platformer/brawler.

Good god that looks stupid. Spyro may have solid gameplay but... ugh that trailer makes me want to avoid the game at all costs.

I didn't really like Spyro on the PS1. It was okay for a while, but got really boring.

This trailer gave me a Kameo 2 vibe.

I haven't played a Spyro game since the PS1 days. This is like returning home from a long day of work after a tornado has destroyed your house. Your first thought, "WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?". That's whta my first impression of this game is.

Shut the fuck with all the hating.
You guys probably never even played the Legend of Spyro series anyways, I jumped into it thinking it would be shit like previous ones, but the game is fantastic. I'd even go as far as to compare it to the originals.
They were obviously good, but this is a reboot of the series, it's making up for all those shitty ones after Spyro Year of the Dragon.
Try the game before you complain about a fucking trailer, for Christ's sakes man.

Most of the games after the original trilogy were mediocre because it was Insomniac who did the original ones, then the franchise was farmed out elsewhere.

Mines of Moria drums/mount Doom visuals, but it does look like a neat take on the series. Let's hope it doesn't take itself in an embarassingly serious direction.
