Long-term readers may have noticed by now that I've developed rather a thing for Gamecock as a publisher. The company's consistently brash and anarchic attitude when dealing with the games industry at large, and self-appointed mission to find and release only the most interesting indie projects around won them my attention months ago. Without any real gameplay footage to show for themselves though, it's been a slightly uneasy situation whenever I've praised them, the threat of eventual disappointment always lingering and forcing me to hold back on the superlatives.
Now however, I feel I can breath more easily, as the first gameplay footage of horror FPS Dementium: The Ward has arrived, and very impressive it is too. What we appear to have here is a very slick, very atmospheric, and potentially very creepy DS game. Developer Renegade Kid has been saying for a while that it intends to seriously push the hardware with this game, and if the final product ends up a looking as good as this, there will no accusations of failure from me. And if the gameplay turns out to match the graphics, I'll have a very happy DS indeed.
Looking nice, my fingers are crossed for this one. Although I'm still not sure if the horror genre quite works on portables. Those games are meant to be played on a large screen with the surround sound cranked.
Excellent graphics and interesting looking game play. Definitely a DS title I'll be keeping an eye on.
@ShadowXOR I didn't like the Doom 3 flashlight either, but my problem with D3 was the fact that it was a very "action" oriented FPS, and the flashlight took away from that. In a true survival horror the darkness/flashlight could be really be effective for scaring the crap out of ya.
Nyteshade: True, but I loved the Silent Hill series where it was always in. It also worked well in The Suffering, and you occasionally had to turn it off to preserve batteries which made an interesting game play mechanic. I just wish you could always have your flashlight and weapon out at the same time. I'm fine with some kind of battery system because it promotes conservation as well as fear.
This is lookin pretty sw33t. It probably won't be too scary on the small screen(s), but if it's done right it could be suspenseful and super fun. The general theme kind of reminds me of Sanitarium a little bit - which was 3rd person, and not really close enough to feel really scary. But, it worked because the story, pacing, music, and _mood_ was suspenseful.
shit, i hate that more and more cool games keep coming out for the ds. mine got stolen a couple of months ago and i had played a lot of great games then, but every single week i hear about a new cool game. damn, and i dont have any money either.

What I meant above was that in the Silent Hill series the flashlight is always "on" not "in".
If they can keep the controls simple and intuitive then we might have a winner.
I want a DS so bad now.
