Bored of Street Fighter IV and too cheap to buy BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger? You may want to try Vanguard Princess, a freeware, 2D fighter with an all-girl cast that was quietly released last week. The credits point to someone named Tomoaki Sugeno who, according to his MobyGames profile, has worked on some King of Fighters titles as well as Resident Evil 3.
The 2D sprites are as crisp as any I've ever seen and Vanguard Princess seems to have already established itself as a surprisingly deep, albeit chaotic, fighter. I haven't played it yet (mostly because it kind of seems like a pain in the ass to install properly), but there are already tons of gameplay videos online, even though it's been out for less than a week. As far as I've been able to gather, each character controls differently and there are tons of loli assist characters to help you out.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth because a fully featured free game is fucking wicked, but i wish these indie developers would start making games that don't make you feel like a paedo when you play them.
Dtoid crew, you should try and get an interview with whoever created this game. Its so under the radar until now, so I'm sure we'd love to know, what went into working on it

The japanese are making indie games now? Aww snap, I think I hear Anthony Burch crying somewhere. Well, it looks pretty sweet and if he did it by himself, then this is a even bigger achievement! However, I'll just play it for a while and then de-install it, write an disgusted review about it just to get the police of my back. Please, don't lock me up! I just like beat'em up games!
The japanese have been making indie games since forever, but we only get to see the hellishly diffucult shmups (great fan of the Touhou series here) and some beat-em-ups, because all the other generes require heavy reading, thus are not very popular outside of Japan.
Speaking of Touhou, this kind of reminds me a bit of Immaterial and Missing Power - that game was a truly awesome mix of fighter and shmup. If you haven't tried it, you MUST. It's not just projectile-heavy, it's a bullet hell fighting game!
Ah... seen this at Kotaku and had no idea how to work it so I gave up. If you haven't posted this game on Destructoid I wouldn't have seent he updated version of the instructions. Thanks!
