Torchlight II announced for Spring 2011 photo

While PC gamers have grown impatient for Diablo III, Runic Games filled the hole perfectly with Torchlight. The focus on loot gathering and the appealing visual style ensured that the title became a cult success. Successful enough, in fact, to justify a sequel!

Torchlight II has officially been announced, with a release window of Spring 2011. The biggest new feature is online co-op, which should provide a much welcome slice of variety to the game. Fully customizable characters and a new, improved user interface have also been promised.

Torchlight is is an intensely addictive game and news of a sequel is just dandy. Exciting stuff indeed!

Really? I mean, I enjoyed the first one, but it always seemed like an impatient lark from/for people waiting for Diablo 3.

Co-op play is an addition that justifies it.

I'd still rather just have D3.

So in the time it takes Blizzard to make Diablo 3 ... Well, you finish the sentence yourself.
This excites me. Torchlight was addicting stuff.

@Stahlbrand
You have to remember that Torchlight was never a fully priced product but it's nice the developer can continue the franchise and improve on it while keeping a similar price.

AWESOME!!! Bought the prequel at the holidays and that game would deserve much more intention than what it got...

I was under the impression that Torchlight had aims to be a MMO. But with that costing alot to start up they released the current singleplayer version to build up funds then they'd slowly update and upgrade the game to full on MMO. I assume that's not the plan anymore and instead they're putting the most requested feature for Torchlight (something that was in Diablo over 10 years ago) into the sequel instead?

What happened to the XBLA version? I take it no co-op for that one?

Don't get me wrong, got it on steam sale, it's basically Diablo 3 until Diablo 3 comes out, which is very high praise, I just wanted to get my couch co-op on, and it's sounding like that's a negatory. Hopefully it'll still hit xbla at least, and the sequel, too, as the woman loves action rpgs, but notsomuch the mouse/keyboard.

Hopefully they'll fix everything wrong with Torchlight, or at least most of the things. Well, I doubt it'll be full priced (just like Torchlight), so I'm half-sold.

@deanbmmv
Not entirely right. They should be building a completely separate free-2-play Torchlight MMO. Original Torchlight was supposed to be connected with it in some way (maybe, character import), but was supposed to stay single-player only.
I guess, developing an MMO took more time when they've planned, so they've decided to give players co-op before releasing an MMO. And make more money along the way for the development. And i also guess, that simply adding co-op to the original would've worked because of the system or the balance, so they decided to make a new one for it.

As long as its a decent price like the first one and there is no sign of D3 on the horizon I'd be interested.

This is very good news. Torchlight was an amazing, light-weight but fun as hell little game.

This could be a chance for runic to do things the right way, and possibly launch Torchlight out of Diablo's shadow and become a great franchise of it's own?

Eh, I already had my intense Diablo-style thrills from the Fate games and their sequels.

If they are able to push in a good storyline to accompany the action for awhile, I might be interested. Otherwise, it'll just be going through more areas to level up and such, and I got tired of that in the last game.

I absolutely loved the first one, especially for $20 (which was reduced further later on). I'm definitely picking up the next one, and will check out the MMO if it's free-to-play. My brand loyalty has been won with a quality game at a low price.

Torchlight was already amazing, and now we get online co-op? Do want.

I'm so happy this isn't an MMO. Making an MMO in this day and age, especially as a small developer, is asking for death.

I'm one of those old players who wish they included LAN support and a extra copy of the game for LAN-only, so you can play with your friends, one in a laptop, the other on the desktop. I think Starcraft 1 came with something like that.

IPX support now!! No?
Serial cable? Blazing fast 115 kbps connection from one computer to the other? No?

Man, i've got to reinstall Shadow Warrior.

Sounds like they decided subscription-based or micropayments were the wrong revenue models to use, perhaps?

I agree with that sentiment, however false it may be.

They said they are still going to do the MMO, but TL2 is the next logical step for them. TL one was a huge success, more then they expected i think, and with everyone wanting a multiplayer TL, TL2 does seem like a great step. TL2 will help them make some money and get some experience with networking and the like, so that when the future TL MMO goes into Beta, they'll be ready.

Also....completely fucking stoked for TL2, i dont care if D3 comes out by then, TL2 will be a first day buy for me.

First day buy. Torchlight was amazing, and the only things I thought it lacked (character customisation[without mods] and online play) are being put into Torchlight 2.
Can.
Not.
Wait.
