While PC gamers have grown impatient for Diablo III, Runic Games filled the hole perfectly with Torchlight. The focus on loot gathering and the appealing visual style ensured that the title became a cult success. Successful enough, in fact, to justify a sequel!
Torchlight II has officially been announced, with a release window of Spring 2011. The biggest new feature is online co-op, which should provide a much welcome slice of variety to the game. Fully customizable characters and a new, improved user interface have also been promised.
Torchlight is is an intensely addictive game and news of a sequel is just dandy. Exciting stuff indeed!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Awesome sauce.
Co-op play is an addition that justifies it.
I'd still rather just have D3.
This excites me. Torchlight was addicting stuff.
You have to remember that Torchlight was never a fully priced product but it's nice the developer can continue the franchise and improve on it while keeping a similar price.
Don't get me wrong, got it on steam sale, it's basically Diablo 3 until Diablo 3 comes out, which is very high praise, I just wanted to get my couch co-op on, and it's sounding like that's a negatory. Hopefully it'll still hit xbla at least, and the sequel, too, as the woman loves action rpgs, but notsomuch the mouse/keyboard.
Not entirely right. They should be building a completely separate free-2-play Torchlight MMO. Original Torchlight was supposed to be connected with it in some way (maybe, character import), but was supposed to stay single-player only.
I guess, developing an MMO took more time when they've planned, so they've decided to give players co-op before releasing an MMO. And make more money along the way for the development. And i also guess, that simply adding co-op to the original would've worked because of the system or the balance, so they decided to make a new one for it.
This could be a chance for runic to do things the right way, and possibly launch Torchlight out of Diablo's shadow and become a great franchise of it's own?
If they are able to push in a good storyline to accompany the action for awhile, I might be interested. Otherwise, it'll just be going through more areas to level up and such, and I got tired of that in the last game.
I'm so happy this isn't an MMO. Making an MMO in this day and age, especially as a small developer, is asking for death.
IPX support now!! No?
Serial cable? Blazing fast 115 kbps connection from one computer to the other? No?
Man, i've got to reinstall Shadow Warrior.
I very much enjoyed the last one, and I especially enjoyed paying only $5 for it through some sale on Steam.
I agree with that sentiment, however false it may be.
You can connect a gaming PC to your TV.
Also....completely fucking stoked for TL2, i dont care if D3 comes out by then, TL2 will be a first day buy for me.
Can.
Not.
Wait.
