Top Cow confirms sequel to The Darkness game is in the works photo

It had already dropped hints at New York Comic-Con last year, but Top Cow has confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that a sequel to 2007's The Darkness videogame is the works. Little information was revealed about the title, outside of the fact that it will be written by Paul Jenkins, who also wrote The Darkness videogame prequel comic book.

As for who else will be involved, it's hard to say. Rumor has it that the original game's developer, Starbreeze Studios, won't be returning for the sequel, busy working on at least two games for Electronic Arts. (This has been confirmed by VG247.) And as of right now, reps for Mike Patton (who nailed the voice of The Darkness in the original game) have told us the singer/songwriter has yet to be approached for the project.

In case you missed the original, Top Cow also announced the game had gone platinum, and will soon be available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a sweet $29.99.

Gotta agree. The first game was great in it's own right, but Patton pretty much made it.

I actually really enjoyed the first game, but I'm going to agree with Beedog on this one.

The first had a very fun little story and a great presentation but a total lack of balance in the weapons and powers. The real killer for me was the stiff animation though.
Still, I'm glad to see a sequel coming since I did enjoy the comic in my younger days and the story was well done.

I've never really liked how Starbreeze FPS games played, so maybe them not handling this game could be a bonus. That was one thing that really killed The Darkness for me, I thought it had a great story as far as FPS games go, but the shooting just wasn't that fun. A sequel could be interesting.

As long as they get a developer on par with Starbreeze, I'll buy it.

@odintal I agree- I think that iit could have been a lot better than it was due to animation and general game mechanics- for that reason though I have hopes for the sequel since those are 2 barriers that could pretty easily be overcome in this day

I hope they make it a 20-30 single player game. If they feel compelled to include multiplayer include the darkness powers.

The need to build on and improve the darkness abilities from the original.

Oh, and New York was incredibly small. It felt like a tiny slice of NY in a box.

I think we can all agree with Mr. JOURNALISM on this one: no Patton, no buy.

Then again, the game was great in every aspect.

on a personal level I would like to see the game take a new turn and combine gears of war style shooting elements combined with Overlord-esque minions.

Well...it's about damn time. Although I kinda find it weird that the US release is only now getting a budget price. It's been £20 in the UK since last year.

Holy shit $30 bucks? Thats a great price for a sequel to a very underrated game.

Actually, any game under $60 should be considered a good thing.

All because of a voice actor? That's like saying everybody bought and played Blasto because of Phil Hartman's voice acting and humor.

I'll be looking forward to this but it's a shame that Starbreeze won't be working on the game. Maybe someone with a good record will pick it up, I can imagine that a lot of bad could be done with this IP.

No Patton already makes it a do not want.

the fact that StarBreeze isn't going to be blessing this one with it's lovely touch further makes me very wary of it.

it's a shame, it's one of my top games this gen. It has so many "SHIT JUST GOT REAL" moments that I lost count.

The first game was one of the most enjoyable trips I've ever been on, every time I look at my shelf I'm tempted to replay it (only thing stopping me is a backlog of other great unbeaten games)... if anyone didn't enjoy it, they fail. I've never felt so drawn in to an FPS before, and I think it was mostly due to the presentation and storytelling. I mean, this game had the COOLEST loading screens. Halo, Half-Life, Call of Duty... love them all to death, but they just did not have that substance. The Darkness' gameplay was unique enough to even stand on its own, I think, in a sea of generic FPS's.

I didn't care much for the city areas, it just seemed so boring to me. The only places where you interact with people is in the subway and not out in the streets. What really got me was the WWI demonic world where you get see the four horsemen or the representation of them. Oh yeah, Patton was the shit for this game.

I really enjoyed the first game. I actually played it straight through and thought that it needed a sequel. Now that it looks like it's coming I too hope Mike Patton is in there. His little loading screen chats were awesome.

I bought that shitty game for $5 off of amazon... for a brand new copy. This game kinda sucks and was early in the 360 generation. I bet they will be able to achieve a lot more with a sequel.

@Kree: If I cared enough, I would've, but then the fangirls here answered for me.

Agreed with @Autumn: The guy is just a singer, not a voice actor. In every game he's in, he just growls/gutter-speaks, that is not talent. But again, fangirls.

Agreed with @The Kojukinator: This game was UNIQUE and FUN, but because it wasnt TEH HALOS, people immediately shit all over it. It gave you control of a fucking crude/rude/gory/disgusting/flatulent/pissing Goblin Army for fuck sake, and this was before Overlord stole the idea.

@Holyetheline: It wasn't an early-gen game, it came out in mid 2007. What was so bad about controlling black tentacles with shark-teeth that killed people and ate their hearts? What's not GOTY-worthy about that?!

Random singer turned video-game voice actor be damned, this game was badass and a sequel was definitely warranted.
