Top 5 Most Anticipated PC Games of 2007 photo
     Hellgate London

It really is no secret that 2007 is going to be a huge year for PC gaming. Already we have seen the release of The Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft -- so that definitely sets the stage quite nicely for PC gaming in '07.

But who are the true standout players going to be this year? Who will step up to the plate and deliver gaming experiences that will be talked about (and played) for years to come? It's hard to say, really, but I've compiled a small list of five games that I feel will shape this year in PC gaming (Burning Crusade excluded.)

Hit the jump for the inside line on the best that is yet to come.

Hellgate: London

Hellgate: London is on the minds of many gamers who fell in love with the Diablo series of games. The main reason why is because the majority of the development team who are spearheading this project over at Flagship are former team members of the Diablo dev crew. Many crave the release of Diablo III, but this is certainly the next best thing based on the team at work here. Hellgate: London features first and third-person action with a large emphasis on character development and dungeon crawling through randomly-generated areas.

Crysis

Crysis is obviously being developed by Crytek, featuring the beautiful, robust and downright jaw-dropping CryEngine2 which produces by far some of the best visuals in a first-person shooter. Ever. However, until some serious tweaks are made to said engine, we might be looking at a beautiful slideshow lagfest if our computers are not being pumped full of anabolic steroids. Regardless, Crysis will easily be one to watch in '07.

BioShock

Do you remember playing System Shock and System Shock 2 years ago? Do you remember how afraid you were alone awaiting your inevitable meeting with Shodan? If you don't, well... you missed out on some good times. But fear not! BioShock is here to be somewhat of a spiritual successor to the System Shock series. It's graphics may not be as ridiculous as Crysis, but this game is definitely a pleasure to look at. System Shock was also known for its incredible gameplay depth, which I'm sure that BioShock won't skimp on in the least. And for you Xbox 360 owners out there who don't have a buff enough PC, you can also score this game, too.

Unreal Tournament III

Yep, we were waiting for this one. UT2007 is now known officially as Unreal Tournament III. There's not really much more that needs to be said about this one except for get your trigger-fingers ready for the ultimate break-neck shooter to be reborn using the Unreal 3 engine. You can snag this one for your PC, Xbox 360, and for the six of you out there who actually own and play the PS3, you can get it on there, too.

...And I've saved the best for last...

Tabula Rasa ("Clean slate")

Richard "Lord British" Garriott, the mastermind and legendary creator of the Ultima series, has a new treat for us. Tabula Rasa is the upcoming MMO masterwork that features some of the most promising gameplay that I've seen. The game has not gained a lot of press because of how secretive the dev team has been about keeping a large majority of the details locked up nice and tight. However, I honestly see Tabula Rasa doing to MMOs what Ultima did for RPGs. If you haven't already read every tidbit of info that has found its way to the internet on this game by now, I suggest you get started.

In summary, it looks like the entire theme of this list was sci-fi inspired shooters with RPG influences (well, except for Crysis.) However, no one can deny that all of these games look outstanding regardless of the coincidence that they tend to revolve around post-apocalypitc warfare. Nevertheless, I still believe that '07 will be an amazing year for the PC gamer, including these games and many others that are not on this list.

Wow, no wonder I don't play PC games anymore, there's isn't a single title on the horizon (aside from Will Wright's "Spore") that I want to play. "PC Gamer" magazine has been pissing me off lately too; they're so arrogant about how powerful the PC is and how much better the graphics are over consoles (if you have the cash to shell out on the best graphics card, that is). Yeah, like graphics are the determining factor in game quality, right?

Seriously, the only thing I like about the PC is the mouse. Not even the keyboard, I'd rather use a thumbstick and joypad buttons than use a standard keyboard for playing games. But the mouse, that certainly helps in certain games. I'm sure I'd end up eating my words when I play "Gears of War" and some sniping genius kills everyone from the other end of the map, so there's a double-edged sword quality there in wishing for mouse control. I already use a USB keyboard to type messages to friends, and that helps a bit, but with voice recording who needs text messages?

I agree with all of those choices expect for Tabula Rasa. That game has been in development for so long i don't even care about it anymore.

WHY THE FUCK ISN'T SPORE ON THE LIST?

the game is supposed to come out this year. it was my most anticipated last year, and its my most anticipated this year. It will be my most anticipated in 2008 if it takes that long.

Do you guys actually read the comments? Spore isn't on the list because it probably won't come out in 2007. But, looking back on the list ... 3 FPS and 2 MMOs. Is PC gaming really limited to 2 genres? Boo.

My wife and I are really looking forward to Runaway 2. For those (seemingly few) of us who aren't all that into the "kill everything on the screen" types of games, Runaway is a great point-and-click puzzle/adventure game and Runaway 2 looks to be even better. If you haven't played the first Runaway yet, you can get it on Amazon for less than $8.

Yeah, Supreme Commander as well, that game is going to be nuts. Silverfall looks really cool, i love the art direction of it. Project Offset looks sweet as well as STALKER. The Crossing, as well as Savage 2.

anyways, there are going to be some sweet games on PC this new year.

Hellgate will be anticipated only because people are wondering WTF is the barrier between freemulti and paymulti. Stalker is another mystery title that will have people gunshy until the reviews are in. MMOs are going to struggle this year I think. With WoW BC and Vanguard just coming out, LOTR online, Warhammer online, Conan online, I fail to see how Lord British's second foray into MMOs will make a difference. Two of the three up there will most likely sell better on the 360 than the PC (UT3 and BioShock).... so of the 5, only 2 have my interest.

Come on! I know good old Westwood studios isn't around anymore, but I know some of you can't wait to blow shit up with NOD obelisk. I've been waiting for a new installment to the series for years, and personally I cannot freaking wait. C&C3 Tiberium Wars tops my list, I love the C&C franchise. I can only hope it doesn't get fucked to shreds by EA(Read: Generals) but we will see. There are over an hour of FMV sequences which were absent in generals, and they're remixing many of the original C&C tracks! **busts a nut** Anyone with me?

As far as RTSes, Supreme Commander gets my vote for most anticipated game for 2007. EA's Command & Conquer has two possibilities: Flawed but great (buggy like BF2), or just a pile of shit. Either way, unless they're aggressive on the fixes (which EA is known NOT to be), I'm still kinda on the fence.

:( I guess I'm on the fence for both RTSes..... And by sucked ass, what do you mean? Buggy? Laggy? Not your kind of game? Because from the videos I've watched, it's almost EXACTLY like Total Annihilation, from the resource management, to the variety of units, to the nuke/anti-nukes.... it's just bigger and badder (oh yeah, TA didn't have shields).

Dtoid is turning into a Console fanboy haven I swear. I am stoked to see spore and supreme commander by far. I still have high hopes for Fallout 3. And what many console people forget to realize is that if you build your computer it is much cheaper than buying say...a dell XPS. Anyways Yeah I know PC gaming is expensive but it is not just a gaming console. Whatever I know we could have these wars forever, I am just sad that Dtoid seems to not cover that much pc gaming anymore.
Civnerd's Avatar

PC gaming is pretty sad..... I think the 360 is thinning the exclusivity of most pc games that I'm interested in.... If it weren't for the mouse/keyboard, there would be absolutely no reason to play it on a pc if you already have a 360.

Plus WoW did not help either. I know quite a few fellow WoWers that did not make one pc game purchase in 2005-2006. And now that BC is out, they're back into it again.

Ever since HD came out, I've been going on my pc less and less. The ability to play on a big screen tv with your home theater sound is just too much for me to leave for my computer room (and no, I'm not going to put my pc in the living room, I want to be able to lurk/post and do my other "computer" stuff without impacting my family's t.v. time).

I do miss the keyboard/mouse, but I've since gotten used to the gamepad... Plus each time I look at my pc I remember my WoW days *shivers* I'm never going back to that!

But Supreme Commander may draw me back in, as well as Fallout 3...... Just wish we knew more about Fallout, that one is a real wildcard too. Could be the most awesome RPG, and then again it could go the way of Shadowrun.

The problems with Supreme Commander so far are lag, and a little unbalancedness towards one faction. So far though, lag has gotten a lot better. I played my first successful 3v3 game about a week ago with no lag, which is saying something considering it went for over an hour.
