Too soon? Hudson River plane crash already in a game, pulled photo

Miracle on the Hudson is what it was called...until the Discovery Channel web site pulled it. Flight sims sometimes suck anyway, but ones based on the real-life experiences of the passengers of US Airways Flight 1549 would have to be bad for different reasons.

Starr Report actually previewed it before it was pulled:

One screen features "options" including these announcements: "Our flight is going to crash!" "Time to panic, we may not survive!" "Put your head down. Brace for impact." I kid you not.

In the game it seems that you'll either succeed by hitting the water, or lose by crashing. Discovery posted the video game as part of its special, "Hudson Plane Crash: What Really Happened," which aired last Wednesday.

Not cool, Discovery. Not cool

Is just like that time when someone did a art/game piece on 9/11. It is definitely not cool.

20 years is the time it takes for it to become okay without backlash.

"Not cool, Discovery. Not cool"

Did you personally see or play the game prior to it getting pulled? NYPost often sensationalizes things. If handled like a simulation I don't understand why there should be any problem with it as it would be hugely valuable simulation for pilots (and wannabes). However, given that it *was* pulled it was probably more like landing the Tomcat in NES Top Gun instead of Microsoft Flight Sim.

I don't see how it could possibly offend anyone as nobody died. Unless you are actually a goose?

Damn, I was really looking forward to this game! They promised realistic 3D graphics!

At least everyone survived on the flight. My guess is that, with it being the Discovery Channel, it wasn't going to be some Newgrounds flash game. They were probably aiming for, as JamnOnTheOne said, a sim to show what happened from the pilot's view, maybe in the hopes that taking the facts and inserting them into a sim would help other pilots.

But yeah...the pulling of the game could have been due to the crapiness of the game, or the fact that they didn't want people to get the wrong idea and think they were mocking the event.

And how is this different from other video games based on real life? WW2 shooters? Strategy games of ancient empires? Shooting a certain president in the noggins from a grassy knoll? Trapping my Sims in the house and burning them to death? I can go on, but you get the idea...

Well, look at what I found:

http://www.games2win.com/en/adventure/play-miracle_on_the_hudson.asp

I have no idea what I'm doing...too lazy to read the instructions. I managed to crash in the Hudson and killed everyone on board.

Yeah...glad they pulled it.

blah

you guys are lame - it is cool IMO - its called free speech & noone here died so who are offending?

I should censor myself for the fear of upsetting someone else's precious feelings and sensitivity - come on - I thought this was an open public forum for video gamers - guess what - thats a video game, and an expression of communication constitutionally protected

so here ( | )

does that offend you? - it should cause its my ass

I think the idea of covering a news story by making a video game is pretty cool. Sure it wouldn't be the most timely news source, but as long as people don't get offended I think it could prove to be the most eye opening. I think it's a shame this game was pulled.

I want to see Mythbusters put that pilot in a flight sim to re-attempt the same landing.

With a strong crosswind

and ice

on Friday the 13th

after a glass of scotch

with food poisoning from a bad fish meal

while talking on a cell phone

Nobody died!

It's pretty terrible as a game, so grats to them for pulling it... but suggesting that there's something morally reprehensible about it here on Destructoid is either the height of ignorance or hypocrisy. Take your pick. (Bonus points if you're right.)

Also, if you're going to scold something for its irreverence, don't illustrate it with Raccoon Mario.

Nobody died, what's wrong with making a game about this!?

I played it. I didn't think it was a big deal at all. The game gets old after 3 minutes.

Count me in the "no one died, so what's the problem" crowd. Yeah, it's a crappy game, but no worse than the other flash fare I've seen.

Oh my god that poor really awesome pilot! There was a documentary on the other night where all the survivors said that it had improved their lives as well. They no longer take it for granted. So everyone's a winner, especially the pilot who can probably bang any chick he likes now.
